This last week has been a whirlwind. As I, like many other Scarlet Owners, waited years for this day to finally come. Last Thursday, Scarlet-X #567 arrived on my doorstep in Reno, NV. All of my accessories minus the side handle had already been ordered and shipped previously so it was only the brain that came. Upon pulling it out my permanent smile continued as the build quality was exceptional just as I had witnessed with the Epic as well as the Scarlet at the Nov. 3d event, but it doesn't quite hit you until you hold your very own copy of the camera. It's also amazing how small the camera is when you hold it in the palm of your hand.

Although juggling some editing projects that have kept me busy this last week, we did manage to get in a number of test shoot days around the area. I have put together a simple little video showing off the footage.

A disclaimer though: This was my first week with the camera so we were trying out many different settings as well as still learning proper usage of the camera, My darker ND filter also hadn't arrived yet so most of my outdoor clips were not shot at an optimal quality F-Stop. Also Compressed Youtube really doesn't do the footage justice. Also the color correction added minus for the graveyard shots was just a quick pass and play with the source settings within Premiere. Watching it in full quality on my 40" editing monitor is truly a sight to behold though, there is just an insane amount of detail and native dynamic range in the raw footage.

But nonetheless, here is the video, I hope it is helpful to people looking to learn more about the camera. If you have any questions about what lens where or settings used, please ask away.

Be Sure to Play Video at 1080P

Shot on Canon 24-70mm 2.8L, Canon 70-200mm 2.8L, and Tokina 11-16mm 2.8

Workflow wise, the camera has far exceeded expectations. Downloading via the Red Station over Esata is blazingly fast. And in a couple clicks, all of my footage can be ingested and ready to go withing Premiere Pro CS5.5. The Raw workflow and 4K resolution with ability to zoom in really changes everything. It's amazing what having these native settings at your fingertips allows you to do and manipulate to achieve the look you want.

Really nice work, Tyler. Your test footage really shows off what the camera is capable of in a lot of different situations. I loved that shot (I'm assuming on the 70-200) of the water rushing by like a sheet. Beautiful. The shots of Reno were really nice as well. So much detail even at 1080p. Thank you for sharing this (as well as your experience thus far) with us.

Thanks Tyler! I think this is a great additional set of footage with a lot of new stuff for us to look at. Keep having fun!

Nice test, a couple of questions! l where you shooting at 24 or 30 frames per second, I see you used slow mo, what frames rates.

In your night shots they seemed quite dark where you able to increase the light level in the edit or was the noise level getting high!

Many thanks

Hi Andrew,

I can definitely make the image brighter, that being said, it was indeed noisier than I expected it to be at the higher ISOs, I still could have pushed farther than I did but I personally preferred the darker look than a slightly noisier one. This current shot is at 800 ISO. With some noise reduction applied though I'm sure you could use the higher ISO's in real world applications. My fastest lens is also only a 2.8 at the moment. So a lens with 1.4 or similar would also be a really huge help. I plan on picking one up late this month and will do some similar shots with it and post my results here.

I shot at both 2K at 60FPS as well as 3K at 48FPS. Almost all of the footage was shot at a 23.98 Timebase. The only shots that weren't were the helicopter shots since they were taken during a shoot for a client in which he requested we shoot at 30fps. I also in a few shots played with cropping and zooming in on both the 4K and 3K footage. I was quite happy with the 3K 48 FPS, I wasn't overly enthused with the 2K shots, they just lacked that pristine detail that the 4K and 3K provide. There are also a couple 5K shots in their. When watching it uncompressed, I also noticed the difference between 4K and 5K, and wow it looked sharp. 4K was still fantastic though of course.

Sorry, I kind of rambled on there, I hope that answers your questions.

Thanks, ya I just loved how the water was running down like that, it was captivating. I wish I had an Epic to shoot some super slo mo of it. And yes that was shot on the Canon 70-200 (the old non-IS version, not the II).

We Produced this Music Video this weekend Shot on Friday and Edited on Saturday.

Shot on the Red Scarlet-X using both Red Volt's via our just arrived DSMC Side Handle and then the Wooden Camera Quickback. Ran Handheld, Kessler Crane, and Tripoded. Used Tokina 11-16 2.8, Canon 24-70 2.8L and the Canon 70-200mm 2.8L. Everything except for the slo mo shots were shot at 4K 8:1. Too bad Youtube compresses the hell out of the footage, you really have to see natively on a larger screen, the camera just blows me away with the detail it captures.

LOL

Fun video!

Must have done something right if you've got four dislikes to one like from the haters on Youtube. :wink5: I myself happen to like the old-school style of the video and song. Not into what I see as the 'Canon lens' look to the video, but I think it's a good example of it. Thanks for the linkage.
