Hello! Just wanted to share my first experience with the Quad Battery Module on the Scarlet.

Charged up 4 RedVolts today to see how long they would last. Popped them all in, and let the camera run. Didn't record just had it running the whole time, every once in a while opening a menu.

Total time I got out of it was 2 hours 15 minutes. No side handle attached, just the quad module. Powering the 5" Touch LCD, and a RedMote. SSD attached.

With 4 chargers and at least 8 batteries you can be running all day. For field work I guess you'd go with a V-Mount or AB Battery, but it's still possible with this setup. Reason I went for the Quad Module was because I didn't have any previous power setups, so I figured I would go with RED. Looking forward to the XLs and Quad Charger!

I will be shooting next week so I will report back with my impressions on that if anyone is interested!

Nice, Congrats! I'm kinda torn between going with the quad module and all REDVOLTs or getting bricks.

How is the balance with the set-up you are showing in these pics?

Balance wasn't too great this way. I don't have my tactical top plate yet, so it was the only way to attach the handle in a way that I like. It works great for just moving the camera, while also supporting it from the bottom with your other hand. Maybe with a lighter lens, or a still lens, the balance would be better.

Yeah I wasn't sure about what to do myself. You can pick up the Quad Module w/ Adapter for a pretty good price from the For Sale section now. I would definitely recommend this setup, I'm happy with it!

Actually looks very natural on the back with the handle mounted in the center. Curious to see how it holds up in a production environment.

I'm goin with bricks all the way. Many different brands and set-up configurations for shoulder mount, counterbalance, powering aks, etc.

Maybe the REDvolts will get higher capacity/runtimes in the future, but I still don't like the idea of locking into only being able to use their proprietary batteries.

Me, neither. I've only ever seen AB batteries on the shoots I've been on. If and when I want to sell them or the charger I have a much larger group of people to sell to (not that there isn't a good market for RED stuff as well). Or, I can bring them on a reality shoot and use them on the 900.

Totally agree with you guys about the bricks. I've decided to give the RedVolts a try, I'm hoping the XLs make it a lot better, and that RED comes out with a power out module of some sort.

For now, I shall see where this takes me!

A question, does the battery module have any support on the base or is it all hanging off those 4 screws in the back of the brain ?

Personally I don't mind single Redvolts mounted through the side handle. But than again I'm not shooting nature docos or long form projects.

You can balance it better by mounting the monitor reversed (so the plug is on the right side), which will push it more forward over the lens. Then just reverse the handle so it points towards the monitor...

Alternatively mount the handle in the front and the LCD in the middle...

Food for thought...

The module adapter screws into the brain, and then the battery module slides up and locks into place via. the locking mechanism on the bottom. See pictures in next post!

Single RedVolts in the side handle are great for run and gun, and also shooting stills when that becomes available!

Very nice!!!!

I am curious if you have an estimated weight of that entire setup (Sliding Top handle and Redmote included)

Thanks!

Entire setup as pictured weighs 15 lbs. Quad Battery Module with 4 redvolts in it weighs 4 lbs.

Idle power use can be misleading - could you run a test while recording? Just format the SSD every time it gets full and record 2K 24fps at the worst compression...

Yes I will do that tomorrow. Just wanted to know if anyone is interested instead of pointlessly posting all the info! Haha. I will run one test at 4K 24fps and one at 2K 24fps.

I wanted to mount it reversed, but my cable isn't long enough. I had the same thoughts you just posted! The way I did it was basically the only way I could at this time.

No problem Chad!

And thanks for adding that to the thread, Sean. I saw it a while back when it was first posted here, but completely forgot about it now.

You can always reverse the handle (unscrew the grip and the rosette and swap the handle where the rosette was, keeping the rosette off) and then mount the LCD on the handle itself:

I was thinking about doing that, but I personally don't like the position of the screen that way. Also kinda unsure about having the wing nut there.

This was discussed quite a bit awhile back. RED stated that there was not yet any power management implemented in the firmware and, as a result, there was no difference in battery usage whether shooting or not. Someone did an actual test and confirmed this. I don't believe the power management situation has changed since.

(I'll search for the thread where it's discussed but no guarantees.)
