Red light just blinks out for a half second and then back on. No fan wind up. The screen blinks momentarily.

I've tried:

Booting without the side handle.
AC power.
Holding down power for 20 seconds.
Booting from the side handle and a Redvolt.
Disconnecting LCD and side handle.

Any more ideas? I think it's just dead *grumble grumble*.

Can you try rebooting with AC power, no lens, no side handle, nothing attached, and with a redmag insert that's loaded on the latest firmware release build?

Sounds like you've tried everything except maybe without the Side SSD module as well.

But to be honest, it sounds like get in touch with Red Support time

Maybe worth phoning as NAB may have thinned the ranks back home.

It's off to FEDEx nothing seems to get it to boot up. It hasn't been outside or anything. It was used as a prop on set but not turned on last week. And now it's dead. :| Sure hope I don't regret not having RED ARMOR. Seeing as about 50% of the time I am on set with a RED one of them die or have trouble I guess I shouldn't have been so flippant about extended warranty--oh well. One more cost to add to RED ownership.

I had a similar "problem" with mine. Turns out the cable wasn't securely connected to the LCD.

Wow, that sounds like a high percentage of failure. Having been on a lot of shoots with Reds I can't remember one actually completely dying on set. Problems, sure. Most of the time we get them back up and running. Maybe the occasional body gets sidelined. Happens with all cameras occasionally. Not doubting your experiences at all. 50% just seems high to me.

Hope you are able to get this sorted out soon.

50% includes having to reboot a few times once the touchscreen goes all wonky. Although in July the Epic on the shoot did exactly this. It went back to the rental house so I'm not sure if it just needed a firmware refresh or something more. Last shoot was with Shane Kelly's camera and I think that was the first professional shoot I had ever been on with an Epic that didn't have to ever be rebooted or have a serious crash (or I didn't notice it). Maybe I'm cursed. Everyone who has rented my Scarlet has said they had no crashes or problems at all haha. I guess that's why I get paid to do beta software consulting. :P

Hopefully with the Dragon upgrade it'll give RED more time to work out the kinks in the firmware since they'll be mostly sticking to the Epic platform. Also hopefully RED will announce the upgrade plan for Scarlet on Monday. Sure would be nice if Dragon made a surprise release and all the Scarlets were getting gutted anyway. ;)

Holding down power for 20 seconds.

You need to hold the power button down for 30 seconds for the 'force restore'. I had to do this with a camera recently when it was exhibiting similar behavior to what you described.

I feel like I held it down for at least 30 seconds... but maybe not quite that long. I definitely did 20 + a little extra. If that turns out to be the case I'm going to be seriously annoyed with my Bomb Rep for not advising me to try that before $200 in FedEx and 'evaluation' fees. I also hope though that it's that simple and not a few hundred/thousand in fried boards.

Nope, looks like the Bomb Rep was right. Or at least the official manual states:

3. To restore factory default settings, hold the power button down for 15 seconds while the camera is powering up.

Sorry I didn't see your post before you shipped. I hope there's nothing seriously wrong with your camera. For reference, when I performed the force restore the fan cycled on an off repeatedly up until the 30 second mark (or very near) and then a normal boot occurred. Did support ask you to send a log file? Log files get updated after every power down, so your most recently used mag might have a clue as to nature of the issue.

Nope, looks like the Bomb Rep was right. Or at least the official manual states:

I was advised by support to hold the button down for 30 seconds. Prior to that advice I was holding it for 15-20 seconds.

It is 15 seconds, but since most people don't sit there with a stopwatch and instead count in their head, we usually recommend 20-30 seconds or until you hear the fans come on full speed.

Camera is back. Not sure what the problem was but it works now! No invoice, no note... just showed back up at the office this morning haha. Guess RED decided to do it for free whatever "it" was. So many thanks for that! The clock on in the system info is back to 0 hours though. I wonder if that means there is some new hardware in there.
