Scarlet with a Kensington Security Socket?

I always feel a little better when I have my laptop locked to my seat frame in my truck when I leave it, having had laptops stolen. Does it make sense having a lock socket on Scarlet? It's so small I can see it walking off. Even at my school I lock my laptop to the tables, sadly it's the world we live in.

I have this small retractile Kensington cable lock that I got at the Apple Store. I'm sure it wouldn't be terribly hard to defeat but something is better than nothing. The Wiki page says that a combo lock is better than a round key lock.

How about we lock the camera to its "home" computer. So you can't use it on any computer its not registered to (unless you call RED)

Bit like bright colored bugs, at first you lose a few to the birds, but the birds soon realize that bight bugs taste bad and they get left alone...

I'd like to see both the Kensington Lock and the computer registration, actually. :construction:

It's not a bad idea, but for a 3k camera I guess I'm not that worried. And I'm not one to leave my gear lying around just anywhere. It's like when you have a lock on a suitcase you're telling people what's inside is valuable. I just won't let this camera out of my sight, that should be safety enough.

Home computer lock sounds like a nice/useful feature.

Honestly, like many well-intended such features, I see that as being difficult to implement and a hindrance to the user. Perhaps a built-in password feature on the camera, like you would find in the BIOS of a computer?

I like the Kensington slot, since they don't take up much real estate (and it should be tougher than the lock itself if the body stays all metal).

Locking the footage to a specific computer sounds like a nightmare to me (since at least in my case it will probably need to spend time in the RAIDs of people more talented at post than am I). Why not a simple PIN that you enter on power-up with presses of the multi-function controller on the back?

The pin idea is interesting. My girlfriend's Passat's radio has a pin feature. If the stereo is removed or the battery disconnected you have to enter a 4 digit pin before the stereo functions. If you have a used car and don't have the number you can call a dealer and they can access it. It would turn a stolen camera into a block of aluminum. Red could tie a pin to each camera and keep that on record as well as provide it to the original owner. If someone wants to use the Pin then you'd just turn that on and then you'd be required to enter the pin tied to that camera. Having to enter it every time the camera boots might be a pain unless some way to enter the numbers quickly is designed.

That would suck. What if you want to edit on a friends computer or something?

Musings...

Musings...

Put a kensington, pin entry, signature computer, and a zoombak GPS tracker.

Death to all filthy theives. Put something in it that blows up and embeds nails in the dirty teef's skull.

This also leaves the potential for an odd feature... a live updated network... google earth style... people could always see where Scarlets were being operated globally..... I'm not sure its useful for anything... but one of those geeky cool things.... if it was not only a locater... but sent small packet of data.... power on/off... fps.... f/ you could see whos shooting in what parts of the world... and how... anonymously of course. although... maybe RED, instead of implementing a network... could build a truly robust data bank of usage data... to help better tailor the next gen of RED products...

Ah yes, that would be great - having the exact location of small, valuable objects being available to anyone on the internet...

wow... ok... /blush... <feels slightly stupid> didnt think about it that way... thats waaaay too much common sense for me.

but then again... if its LOJACKED... wouldn't it be kind of foolish to steal?

I appreciate the offer for some type of software security measure, but no thanks. Having the satisfaction of knowing the thief can't use the camera makes me feel no better about not being able to shoot my next job or kid's soccer match.
Generally, small time crooks who steal little cameras aren't doing so to use them, but to sell them for $20 to have a bite to eat, pay off a debt, or get their next fix. Even if the guy can't sell it cause everyone knows it's worthless, it's still in his possession and not mine. He will know not to try and steal one again, but the next guy coming along looking for an easy buck wont since most criminals don't read message boards and spec sheets.

heh.. I would not actually advocate Scarlet GPS functionality either.... really.... except for maybe EXIF data... to track locations, but honestly thats not important for anything... its just cool. Its all just theory and brainstorming, not all ideas will stick, but you know... never hurts to throw stuff out there. might get someone thinking!
