So I just found that RED is supposed to be coming out with the Scarlet, thats how I found this forum. But its kind of hard to tell if they are still planning to release it this year.

Is there any news on the subject? I read an article that said the RED Scarlet was canceled, but then saw on other sites and the RED FAQ that they were still planning on coming out with it, but that it was undergoing some changes.

If the Scarlet is still going to be released, will it have the same 'film-like' look of the RED ONE?

Thanks

You can read up on the DSMC details here: http://reduser.net/forum/showpost.php?p=338414&postcount=7

Everything we have heard from RED suggests they are still on track to release the S35 Scarlet by end of summer/early fall this year with the 2/3" Scarlet's coming out shortly after. RED's competitors are paying attention so they are not releasing details as often as they did for the RED One.

The Scarlet sensor will be even better then the RED One's and will be the same as the sensor in the higher end EPIC. The hardware processing the data (framerates, aspect ratios, bit rates, etc.) is what is more expensive on the EPIC.

This is all subject to change at any time of course.

Thanks for the info. Now, you must excuse my ignorance in this area as I am new to RED systems, but if I do get the Scarlet when it comes out, will it have the capability to switch to a 720p or 1080p recording mode if I wanted to recording something other than somthing like a short film?

I was planning on getting the xh-a1s soon for things like events, weddings and the sort. But if I purchased the Scarlet, would I still be able to use it for those types of things? From my understanding, the Scarlet can only record about 4-5 minutes of footage to an 8gb CF card.

Thanks

A 1080p record mode is in the specs for the Scarlet and EPIC. I don't think RED will ever do 720p.

CF card capacities are always getting larger. I would guess you could get about 12 minutes of 3k REDCODE 42 on a 16gb CF card. Maybe 20-30mins at 1080p. The DSMC system looks like it comes with some interesting recording media options but nothing has been confirmed by RED as of this time.

Ok, one more question. If I decided to get the Scarlet Cinema, is the cheapest lens going to be the one on the site thats like $8,500? If it is, that would be out of the price range I am looking at. In that case, would the Scarlet with the 8x fixed zoom give the same cinematic look as the Scarlet Cinema?

Sorry if I'm trying to pull a lot of info from you before its even released, I am just trying to decide if it would be worth waiting for the Scarlet, or if I should just get the XH-A1s

Thanks

You can put pretty much any lens mount you can imagine on either the Scarlet or EPIC. Just keep in mind there will be cropping if you put an S35 or FF35 lens on a 2/3" sensor.

The cheapest option is going to be putting a Nikon mount on a Scarlet. You can find excellent manual Nikon's on Ebay for $50 - $200. The only problem is you won't be able to get any real wide angle shots since these are FF35 lenses and will become longer when placed in front of a 2/3" or S35 sensor.

The best option for the 2/3" Scarlet is likely to be the RED mini primes but there has been no price announced for these at this time.

Thanks Justin, I really appreciate it. It gives me more to think about before I decide which camera to get.

You can record 1080p RGB but you'll get less not more recording time than 3k RAW. By about 33%.

So 12 minutes of 3k RAW would translate into about 8-10 minutes of 1080p. If my math is correct.
