  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-W Production Update?

Are there that many scarlet w's and ravens actally in the wild? Red Europe has not had any since last year and have no idea when they will and They only had a handful in the first place.

"hidden value" hahaha. "alternative facts" come to mind ;-)

"Alternative Facts"??? If you don't consider the ability to go from SW to Weapon Helium of any value, then what planet are you from? NO other camera company does this?

there are lots of SW and RAVENs in the wild.. just lookup hashtags on any social media platform..

The Scarlet-W is a great camera. The improvements in the DSMC2 bodies alone are enough for the upgrade no matter which sensor..

So your saying that sw is noticeably better in image and usability over the scarlet d.

I wish I could get my hands one to try it myself.

When do you think they will upgrade the scarlet w?

The images are very similar but the noise is quite a bit less on all dsmc2 bodies though. Have you tried any of the dcms2 cameras? weapon MG? raven?

While you wait, you should try the new IPP2.. works on all red cameras from red one to current.

Public service to my RED using friends waiting for your Scarlet-W: as you may know, I was a "first day" orderer on Dec 10, 2015 (that's a year and 2 months ago). I have yet to receive my camera.

And today I got an update: I should not expect my camera to even be ALLOCATED until Spring 2017.

Surprise!

They did offer to let me buy an Epic-W at the discount price of only about $20K. Plus AKS, which you'll need. So, really it'd be a $27,000 camera, minimum, which is essentially double the price of our S-D to S-W upgrade (with comparable media, etc., and that's a bit misleading because Epic-W is 8K and eats a ton more media than S-W).

My personal feeling is that RED's Dragon is DEAD. It is not coming back. It is DEAD and GONE. And if that's true, I expect RED has been scrambling for a while now on how to deal with all of us S-W people (and of course the Raven people). I do not know what they'll be doing for us, if anything. As I've said before, Epic-W is about the lowest specced camera I could accept for that Helium sensor. I feel for RED. I like RED, at least most of the people I've met there have been good people who love what they do. Of course, I feel for all of us long-term waiters even more.

This is strange. A first day orderer not getting his camera while many others down the line getting theirs. What's wrong in the Red queue system?

i can't sell my camera until they start rolling out, I would be kind of happy if they just scrubbed the scarlet W for a scarlet WH or W?

its not like red not to admit when they are wrong so i dout they have killed the dragon

Dean, I totally agree: the Dragon cameras rock! They'll be great cameras to use for years, especially as an indie or owner-operator.

I'm not sure why or how RED messed up with me, a first-day orderer. I'm not happy about it, and my rep has been unable or unwilling to make it right. I'm going to go with unable, because I won't ascribe intentions, although he did say RED messed up with me- which is clearly true, given how many people have their cameras who came after me. Now, if I hadn't been a "RED Guy" at the start of RED One, I'd probably be a lot more angry, but frankly, this "time off" from being a RED owner has been really good for me and my business. I rented cameras I probably would not have, had I had my S-W. In fact, the time off and RED's continued inability to deliver something I ordered well over a year ago (14 months, now, right?) had been steadily pushing me to understand and accept Art Adams' point of view (http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/dv-info...ing-vs-renting-why-i-never-bought-camera.html).

Although I'd still like a S-W as my little personal camera.

We don't know what's going on inside RED. But from the outside, there's something very wrong with their ability to deliver cameras sporting the dragon sensor. I reiterate: I think that sensor is dead. And I speculate that RED is working on a Scarlet-Something that will sport another sensor. Maybe not helium.

I think it says a lot about their brand that there aren't thousands of us screaming on every forum about this. Blackmagic certainly got screamed at when they had issues with production that were I think (not sure) a bit less crazy than these issues. RED's customers love RED.

Great article, thanks for sharing. On another note - that's a massive stuff up that you ordered on day 1 and haven't got it yet. I would be feeling pretty damn annoyed about that. I hope you get your hands on that camera any day now. RED's branding/marketing has been very smart in terms of developing a very loyal community. There's aspects of that I like and aspects of that, that I think in the long term RED would be better off without. Whether that was a strategy or it just grew out of reduser I'm not sure. But there's too many talented wonderful people on here to stay away. And when they DO make them, RED make damn fine cameras.

Should say for our business model owning a camera has been really great. The ScarletMX has been our A camera since the beginning of 2013. Still going without issues! But I wouldn't buy an EPIC (I'm not making featuers, TVC's, Branded content, music vids and short films... In Perth Australia, not Hollywood). Scarlet-w more than fullfils our needs the way that camera is specced. Then we own a couple cheaper cameras (mirrorless/slr etc) and when we need something different for live event or super run n gun (ND's, good low light) we rent an FS7. But clients don't know /care what we shot on - just what it looks like in the end and that we can meet required specifications. We've fallen in love with redcode though.

the dragon and r3d work flow is amazing, period:)

but they have taken to long for what ever reason.

offer upgrades to people that have had them but pull the plug today and announce something with immediate delivery by nab and keep to the delivery dates.

An update: they say that my S-W is in "the next batch", but... I do not know what that means. Seeking clarification from them now. I dunno. I'm kind of not so excited about it right now.

Just got word from my dealer that his order of Scalet-W's are shipping.

Hopefully that means good news for some of you!!

Well, I'm out. Despite them saying it'd ship in the next batch. It's been a fun RED ride, since 2007 for me, and we'll keep renting REDs when it makes sense for the project, just as we're renting Arri, Sony, Panasonic, etc. But camera tech is moving way too fast to make a good investment for my business, especially as we do larger projects, and especially given the age of Dragon.
