  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Less then 2 weeks from tentative shipping still no clips etc... Anything i missed?

As of this moment, there doesn't seem to be any in the wild.

Granted you're entitled to be hesitant or skeptical, but it's the same Dragon sensor that we've been seeing for years, with some additional fine tuning. We should have a pretty accurate idea of what to expect. There's also some Weapon 6K tests out there to show the results of the processing improvements.

So spending 15k to just "hope" it looks like that

I've been shooting Dragon 6K and 5K for a while. There is no "hoping". I know DSCM2 is going to be a lot cleaner and better. So I'm not particularly worried. At all. For $15K, this camera will be a BEAST.

In theory...If someone can post a 6K Weapon R3D, all one would have todo is crop to 5K to get a "sample".

Is this true? That is, can we expect that the Scar-W image quality will match the Weapon at 5K exactly?

Theoretically, if a shot has the same 5K and the same compression ratio will it be the same or are there other processing or bitrate differences between the cameras?

Theoretically, a WOVEN CARBON FIBER WEAPON shot at 5k 5:1 will look exactly the same as SCARLET-W shot at 5k 5:1.

According to Phil Holland, the image will be identical at same resolution and same compression.

Same sensor, same settings, same image.

It could be argued every camera (individual circuit board and sensor assembly) is still slightly different/unique, but that's a forensic-level difference you're never likely to see at all, and would be a variance that exists even between individual camera's of the same make and model.

That doesn't mean you won't see people stating sometimes their different model (but same sensor) camera's somehow look different/better/worse even when using the 'same' settings, but that's not what you're asking about.

So, yeah, the real difference comes down to what the camera's can do when not using the same settings, with the more expensive/capable models allowing the use of higher frame-rates, resolutions and lower compression etc.

All these Theory's are cool.. But just buy it in hopes that it looks just like something is ridiculous. I put a deposit on a Raven after I seen it in action. I'm thinking about switching to the scarlet-w but wanted to see the difference.

I mean, it's not really a bunch of theories - this exact same thing happened with the MX sensor what, 5 years ago? Scarlet and Epic at same resolution and compression look exactly the same as well.

It's not really theories. It's the same as it was with MX and Dragon Scarlet looked the same as Epic at the same resolution and settings. Same sensor. It's a 5K cut of the same sensor with most of the same internals as Weapon. I'm pretty sure there has to be some Scarlet W footage out there anyway. If it's not released yet, it will be soon. Also we have a month at least until the first units ship. Latest update says March 2016 if I'm not mistaken. I've just placed my deposit so I'm not expecting mine until April or May.

First units actually ship in 12 days. :)

Much ado about nothing.

You are looking at a tried and true camera system. There are Weapon/DSMC2 models shooting all over. REDcode is a well established, high quality codec. The Dragon sensor is a proven entity. Honestly, if you need to see footage from a Scarlet-W to make up your mind, you just may be looking at the wrong camera. If you don't rust RED to deliver groundbreaking images at this point - good enough for Guardians of the Galaxy - then you may never trust them.

Not to mention that firmware updates are continuously improving things so what you see today won't likely be as good as what you see in a month or two.

Chill. LOL

Im sure something is on its way. Im sure every new camera announcement comes with a test video as part of the "campaign" or whatever you want to call it. Remember some people new to red would buy this camera, they need to show it off to them as well.

Not really to "hope" it look like that, Jarred told NFS that the Scarlet-W's sensor is "Identical" to the weapon's. SCARLET-W uses the same sensor as the 6K DRAGON, but only has an active 5K image area.

... I'm thinking about switching to the scarlet-w but wanted to see the difference.

It's all good Shatek, I understand where you're coming from. I too want to see Scarlet-W footage from a production Scarlet-W camera but everyone makes a great point---It's the same sensor in the same DSMC2 style body. The footage will be identical. It's just that when people have 6K Weapons, they don't shoot 5K... But as i'm sure you've experienced with your REDs... the footage from S-W is gonna be great.

$15 k is a lot of money, but it always says, that the deposit is 100% refundable. It is worry free. When it comes out and you don't like it you can request for refund. So ........
