Scarlet W Dragon 5k RedWideGamut & LOG3G10 Question

Hello all,

I have shot with the Epic Weapon and a recent project on the Helium sensor. Those bodies have you go through IPP2 to set up the RWG and LOG3G10.

I am shooting a project on the Scarlet W Dragon and noticed it only has Legacy mode with no IPP2 option, however I do have RWG and LOG3G10 as selections. Are these the same color and gamma spaces as I am used to on the other bodies? And is this the method most people are using on the Scarlet W? I want to make sure that there is not some abnormality where the Scarlet produces more noise in these settings or loses a stop.

Lastly being that its the Dragon sensor with a Standard OLPF I assume the base is 800 and I am safe to push it to the 1600 range with not too much noise.

Yeah I don't think Scarlet-W has IPP2 built in. But you can add that in RCX or Resolve.

Base is 800 yes, but anything above that could introduce noise - it really all depends on how your exposing the scene, and other variables like your resolution, FPS, and compression.

There is no single answer to this.

In addition to what Nick said, light quality and temperature with white balance choices also affect noise. So for example, noise levels of night exterior shot with street lights will differ and 3200K will differ to 5600K. As with every other camera.

So it's best to always test the camera for the intended scene first to see how it reacts to specific conditions.
 
This is the great thing about RED. Literally everything that you mentioned is metadata and can be changed in post (including ISO, but going too high will introduce noise in the image, so try to keep it below 1600 in camera. even if its underexposed, you can bring it up in post).

IPP2 is simply another means of processing the image, from camera to final delivery. It can be done in camera or in post, doesn't matter. Same with RWG and LOG3G10, you can turn it on in camera, in post, whenever. None of these settings matter in the long term, people just like to be able to monitor the image in IPP2/RWG/LOG3G10, or monitor in whatever they plan to grade in (think of it as an in camera LUT). It is all raw metadata, so you can completely change you color space in post (this blew my mind back when I first started with RED)

So set your color space and gamma to whatever you want, and shoot the hell out of it.
 
Regardless of IPP2, it is still the same Gamma Curve and Color Space. I always shoot with it on to get a better idea of the RAW footage. The other IPP2 settings are just adjusting the curve and how it is applied for contrast and highlight detail.
 
Noise is not just the iso but also how much light the sensor gets. 800 is fine if there you expose to the right (histogram)
I still use a light meter on most stuff, meter is set to 100 iso if I aim for 320 iso (my preference in studio) If I aim for 800 iso the meter is set to iso 250, so technically I overexpose the sensor by 1 and 1/3 stops. If you carefully watch your highlights those are my best settings for avoiding noise on the Dragon sensor.

Let's make it straight. If r3d is RAW, which it is supposed to be, and if you are shooting in r3d (not Prores) a Scarlet-W image is equivalent to any other Red camera in post. Even an Epic MX can use IPP2 in post.
In post, I don't find much of a noise difference between ISO 800 and ISO 1600 (whatever be the model of RED) unless you have grossly underexposed while shooting. Mind you, some amount of noise can always be corrected in post.

I think IPP2 is a great thing for all Red cameras in post. It has made even the phased-out cameras relevant.
