  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet-W Bad Compression in HFR, Worse Than Epic-MX, Any Weapon Examples Out There?

Dan!

Good information! I was only shooting RAW and did not try the RAW+ProRes feature yet. That's good to know for future reference!

Dan, you should be able to access the *.5K modes by going into advanced...

When you're in the resolution selection tab,
click down to go to advanced,
and there you can access all kinds of modes,
as well as set anamorphic squeeze factors.

Dan,

To get 4.5K, select the 4K resolution and go into the advanced settings to find 4.5K. I started looking in 5K, but it wasn't there, and I found it in 4K. I don't have my camera right in front of me because there are a couple of other small steps to get it, but I will check later and share.

Daniel,

You beat me by a second with the response! But to add on to what you said which is correct, 4.5K can only be accessed when you go in using 4K. I tried it a couple of days ago, and I couldn't get to it when I had it selected as 5K before selecting "advanced." Could be a small bug, or intentional.

Ok man, please upload some r3d's, the thread hit 10 pages without an actual footage to see and discuss

For what it's worth I love high frame rates on my arris vs my reds.. But I've never used weapon or mini mags so compression and through put limits always seemed to harm my scarlet MX and epic MX and even dragon... Imagine with mini mags it's much less of an issue on weapon but hardware on the lesser models means it's def something to be aware of..

What about the Weapon CF in your signature?

Zeb,

tell me what to shoot with CF I would do smth and post those .r3ds

will try to do it tomorrow.
Using 512GB mini Mags and 24mm Sigma closed down if thats ok.

EDIT:
I just can do a Weapon CF vs Epic-MX shoot, since my Dragon became the weapon.

Never used it, it's rental only. Never shot mini mags at all so my compression has always been way bad ratios on dragon or MX which helped me far less than Dsmc2 compression wise. Kind of embarrassing I know but I spent so much I can't afford a day of testing honestly between the arris and red upgrade its gonna be a struggle for my SXT so I just book them out and work seven days a week..

If that's a CF Weapon you got then right here Mate! Start at 24fps and ramp up to 300fps at best RC available. You would be my, and many curious folks, Hero! Couple second R3D clips of each

If you also are able to shoot a couple say 120 240 and or 300 fps at Raven/Scarlet-W Compression rates that would cover a lot of peoples questions as well.

Raven Scarlet-W Max frame rate Compression values:

120 fps at 4K Full Frame (4096 × 2160) and 13:1REDCODE
150 fps at 4K 2.4:1 (4096 × 1728) and 14:1REDCODE
150 fps at 3K Full Frame (3072 × 1620) and 10:1REDCODE
200 fps at 3K 2.4:1 (3072 × 1296) and 11:1REDCODE
240 fps at 2K Full Frame (2048 × 1080) and 8:1REDCODE
300 fps at 2K 2.4:1 (2048 × 864) and 8:1REDCODE

Ohh k. ya I hear ya man. Good to be busy tho :thumbup1:

Waiting for my mini mag stations to arrive and I can start uploading some tests for everyone to review and play with. I'll take a look at 4.5k tomorrow as well! Let me know if anyone has any questions that need answered

Dan

I think we should look at well exposed high speed deep focus and less well exposed to see how it holds up

Best I can come up with on the spot

Edit: Also id say that lens is a tad soft with the 1.4 magnifier engaged like it was for that shot. (Canon 200-400 w/ 1.4M)

Thanks John. Appreciate you taking the time.

So theres 120 at 13:1 with plenty of light and minimal activity in the frame, and it doesn't look bad. Better than the A7Sii footage @ 120, plus u get raw, Red color science, and all the other Red shit. Thats what all u Raven guys will get, so that should settle it, but i'm sure some will also want to see what 300fps @ 2k 8:1 looks like.

The difference is, as I mentioned earlier, that Red gives you more options, just as RAW gives you more options. A nice looking in-camera sharpened non-RAW image with an applied gamma-curve will probably look much better than what you look at when opening up RAW-footage. The difference is that the non-RAW footage is limited, it is what it is. The RAW footage you get with Red is meant to be adjusted. You have options to do whatever you want with it and there are so many possible changes you can do... but do you use all of them? No, because you know it will look bad. The Raven and any other Red camera gives you a lot of options. You can adjust the compression to insane levels of compression, but should you do it? No. Why don't you do it... because you know it will look bad. This is the difference between others and Red. Others give you limited choices and you need less knowledge about the digital process when using them. Red gives you everything you can possible do with the camera and the RAW files but it demands that you understand what you do.

It's like having a lab develop your 35mm rolls compared to having a dark room yourself. Some people prefer only to take photographs and let someone else develop them by a certain standard. They measure what they photograph based on their performance but do not take into account the labs input on developing the images. Using a Red is like having a dark room. You can bleach bypass, you can do blow ups and you can adjust every inch of the negative to whatever you want really.

I've tried to come up with a good analogy for why some prefer other brands while some prefer Red. I think the dark room / external lab is a good analogy for it. It also is an important message to those buying a Raven. You need to know that you didn't just buy a camera, you bought a dark room with it. I suggest you learn how to develop film and master it, because when you do, you might probably have more control and possibilities than other brands, that's the strength with shooting Red and knowing what you do.

This....
