Hey guys,

Got to take my new S-W on a test shoot and mix it in with some previously shot footage from my phantom 4. No expectations from the video so I was free to just experiment. Seeing as this is my first time owning a RED, I didn't want to put myself in a position where I couldn't deliver if something went wrong. I shot the video to compare to my 1DC and see how the dynamic range and highlights held up. Didn't get a chance to mess with the R3D files yet as I wanted to turn this around quickly for my the parties who let me use the home, therefore I went with the ProRes (LT) files to edit with. I did some HDRX shots though since I didn't want to spend even more time on a pro bono project, I'll play with those files later.

Not a very complicated shoot or edit so don't expect anything over the top...like a cute dog running on a beach ;).

Still have a bunch to learn as how to get this puppy to really sing so I'll be doing tons of shooting.

Thanks,
Randy

Hi Randy. Thank you for posting.
It looks like you didn't do mush in post to the footage. Can you post a R3D frame of a challenging lighting? Something like the interior with a window with something outside.
thanks

Did you ND the windows or did the interior really just get lit that evenly? I'm in love with that dynamic range if no ND was used.

Thanks for the replies!

I used a Tokina 11-16 2.8 for all the wides and a Canon 24-70 2.8 II for any tight shots. Did very little to the image in post other than color correcting white balance / cast and contrast. When FCPX gets updated to work with S-W R3Ds and I have a bit more free time, I'll do a recut using the r3d files.

Zach, no NDs at all. Although I wish I had that much control over lighting, in these shoots, speed and delivery are more important to the client than eeking out every last piece of DR and image quality. Hoping that I get much faster with working with my S-W.

Douglas, give me a day or two, I'll see what I can upload.

Thanks

Thanks Randy.
Have you try the Trial version plug in for FCX? I installed it to try it out and it seams to work fine. I use Resolve for grading, but I wanted to see if it worked for quick edits.

Nice Randy, thanks for sharing. Would you mind to also upload a shot or two of the Phantom? The only thing to be found is youtube footage. It would be nice to see what the footage actually looks like.

Awesome work! Did you use a slider or Ronin for the interior shots with the Scarlet or just hand held? And was that just natural room lighting or did you individually light each room as you shot it? Thanks. amazing work once again.
