  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet vs Sony

Yes.

And there is a rumored 7 K version as well.

That should be in the NXCAM line. Philip Bloom has some pictures and infos about it on his wbesite. As he tells, it seems Sony won't put HD SDI on it so all you'll have would be AVCHD. Not so great.

The F3 is quite nice BUT only XDCAM EX. Compared to the Scarlet S35 which I think could be in the same price range that Sony camcorder is a bit expansive. We'll see when both are out which one has the better sensor and which one becomes the more expansive when fully equipped (let's say the Sony with the 3 primes package and an external recorder VS the Scarlet S35 with 3 prime lenses, SSD module, pro I/O, monitor and viewfinder and so on...

For sure, Scarlet S35 will have the benefits of the RAW recording. Sooooo, we'll see. Let's look at Epic first !

HDR feels like more and more of a cavern between Epic/Scarlet and these new cameras. I think the DR difference is going to be very easy to see even in youtube and vimeo compressed comparisons. Beyond RAW and the resolution and modularity and all the other things we look forward to, I think HDR is going to really set the Red cameras apart from the rest.

Got this link from a email I was sent today over here in the UK:

http://www.visuals.co.uk/sony-PMW_F3K.php

They give an overview and the Sony launch video. It will make for an interesting comparison if they bring this out for $7k.

But will it do 5K :-)

It is about 20K$ with the 3 lenses package:smash:

I'm really hoping Jim comes out with an annoucement regarding Scarlet S35 now that the competition is finally putting their cards on the table.

The silence must end!

HD-SDI?

HD-SDI?

What does the signal format have to do with it?
You can put any signal through HDMI. Or analog component:coolgleamA:

I think the footage looks a bit better then the footage I've seen from the AF100. But being a Reduser for more than 2 years now, Full HD, is not very appealing to me anymore. 3K/4K/5K offers so much more. Can not wait to finally get a Scarlet.

It has 4:2:2 10 bit uncompressed out. This might be the one for me if RED isn't rolling by June.... Sony make some beautiful images and the F3 seems to be no exception... this modular camera may well have the same IQ.

Very interesting.

Yes you can. But the high end external recorders won't use it and go through HD-SDI.

The F3 has, the lower priced NXCAM camera won't... Or it seems it won't (according to Bloom's post here : http://philipbloom.net/2010/11/17/f3nxcam/ )

Cinedeck has HDMI and SDI inputs. Does 4 different codecs for recording and uncompressed 4:2:2 (or 4:4:4) as well.

I guess... My bad... I didn't know about that one. Looks great. I still have doubt about the HDMI transmiting 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 signal (in some of my classes we were told HDMI is a 4:2:0 YCbCr/RVB signal) but I admit I was wrong.
That puts the Sony NXCAM in some new perspectives to me. If the sensor is really the same as the F3, it can be a very nice piece of gear. (just not as yummy as a Scarlet, I think)

NXCAM with something like the Atomos Ninja will be a very good low budget option. The Ninja can take it's feed out the HDMI and record Prores. The Ninja will sell for around 800 I think.

I am so hoping for this. It could be the new frontier in imaging. Better than 3D in my book, combine with anamorphic optics, who could want more?

However -- (there's always a however), that Sony looks pretty damn good, especially considering the DP said it was mostly available light. I was sure they lit it with a decent amount of light when I first saw the F3 movie.

If that's how the Sony renders "available light" skin tones, then it's very impressive. I like the face tones better than most Red footage (which seems to make people look more pale than reality). Whether the Red stuff is intentionally that way, or what, I find the skin tones in the majority of Red footage a bit cold and unappealing. The wild card is that you can manipulate the RAW files, but still. (Sorry I'm no one's fanboy).

You're right for the fact that F3 footages were impressive. However, I don't jind Red footage as cold as you said. Might be a matter of tastes, screens and stuff.

The sthing is that in our industry, I have the (bad) feeling that most people stick with established brands. There's still a lot of DP that claim that the Red One doesn't shoot real 4K but 1,6K upscalled. Others claim that a 1080P HD ProRes4444 shot with the Alexa looks better transfered to 35mm film than a 4K Red One MX footage. (I suppose it can be a matter of many post production settings but I can't figure how a sensor that it said to have less resolution can be better in 35mm transfer... Saying that doesn't mean I consider Arri's a bad Camera. I love it too, I think it's quiet too expansive and should be in the same price range as the Red One MX.)

Speaking of Arri's Alexa, I think that if they make a smaller version in the SOny F3 for factor, THAT, would be a serious competitor !

...Errr... Sooooo many cameras to play with....

Wow... I really hate it when classes share bad information. That's like the ultimate betrayal.

HDMI can transmit 36 bit per channel 4k at 24p, and 48 bit per channel 1920x1200 60p.

HDMI specifically supports several variants of 4:4:4 image.

Finally... if you are concerned about using SDI gear... there are HDMI-SDI converters.

So i/o shouldn't be a problem for NXCAM from a technology standpoint.

That said... Sony is making the camera, I'm sure they'll find some ways to limit it.
