  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet vs. perfect camera checklist

What I would add:

14+ stops native DR
Clean 6400 ISO
Scaled, 4:4:4, 10bit+, ProRes 1080p/2k
Canon 1D X has clean ISO 12800, if I do remember right.

as much as I'd love to see stabilization and ND filters, cause both gave me a difficult times with DSLRs, I just doubt the Scarlet will have any of these features.
But I am really looking forward to the Canon release as well. If Canon provides what rumors tell, then their camera will rock. But let' wait and see. I'll invest in the camera with the best features.

If there is an S35 Scarlet, with the Canon lens mount you can use IS lenses for stabilization. Scarlet fixed had built in ND filters, nothing ever said about OIS though. Adobe CS5.5 has excellent post stabilization tools.
The first and only camera I have used in 30 years that had OIS is by current GL2. Nice feature, but not really essential.

I'm only considering Scarlet Fixed, as that is the only camera we know about. Of course, with interchangeable lenses there are other options.

If Scarlet Fixed has ND filters, that's great news! I've missed that. It's one of the major shortcomings of the FS100.

I think we all realize that for true quality, you will want to have legs or some kind of support for your camera. But for me, not having OIS on the Fixed is a pretty major drawback.

I can see me doing quite a few handheld shots, and with a 2/3" sensor I will probably want to use the tele range extensively to compress the image and narrow the DOF.

Yes, Adobe's tool might be qualitatively good, but they to take their time and they crops into the image. This is where 3k really comes into play, but it would have been better to have it in the lens/camera.

Another solution (perhaps the best one?) would be to integrate iPhone type accelerometers/gyros, have the brain track movement, and then REDcine X neutralize shake in post with a slider.

18-200mm without IS? That's just totally useless. I have shot with Zacuto rigs and counterweight a dozen times and everything above 80mm (on a 7D) is actually not worth it.
OK, there are IS lenses out there but far from being lightstrong and cheap. The 70-200mm Canon IS USM is a great glas and the IS works like a charm, nonetheless a built in IS and ND would be simply the best you can get.
But I doubt we will see a camer with any these features on the 11.3
And who considers the CS5 post-IS worth it? I don't. I have used Mercalli sometimes but it the end results are simply bad.
