Here is a quick test with the 5d and the scarlet. We shot in 4k with the scarlet and compressed the files to prores hq. And then the grading was made.
Here is the test:

Counting down to the closure of this thread...

OMG!!!... Tests like this make me almost shake my head off !

Try next time showing a true 4k log image graded against a fake HD line skipped 5d image... Then you will see why Scarlet is 6x times sharper with so much more latitude...

I'm sorry, your test was flawed in so many ways...

If your going to do a real test, do it properly with full resolution images with at least a sharp lens.

Trying get resolution and depth like this from a 5D video image.

IMPOSSIBLE!!!!

i don't like your grading, but i get your point.. if you want to tell a story, a 5d maybe more practical

Yeah...shoot a pattern or a suit jacket with a 5D and a scarlet...see which obviously comes out on top. I have worked with DSLR footage, and all its flaws and work arounds enough to be soooo annoyed when people compare these two cameras...

It's like the Epic vs hacked GH2 test that appeared.

Really, people that are used to what DSLR's do (sharpening/h264 etc) often miss that the point of Epic/Scarlet is to have the equivalent of a RAW neg... and then you sharpen/adjust to you liking and you're not locked into something thats baked in.

But, the workflow and method of use is different... but the apples to oranges comparisons will continue as the Scarlet has brought RED@4K to a larger mass market... and one that 'thinks' in a very DSLR way.

More practical? It all depends on the who, what, where, when and why. Target output... Goals... For me 5d is less practical most of the time, even if my target deliverable is Vimeo. I try not to measure practicality by amount of work or simplicity of workflow. I have other priorities. I guess that is why I'm here and not on some 5d cinema site.

If the point is that the final output is the same for less work, then you must stipulate there is a caveat; your final grade must be to be equal to the 5d aesthetic. If you have a different look in mind you are SOL.

Purely out of curiosity, I would like to see a "scientific" test between the cameras. However, even with the rather thoughtful and mature audience here (relative to other forums) I'm not sure this thread could go long without descending into something that will help no one. Or, maybe an examination of this particular test and it's possible flaws would be helpful.

Today we'll be testing the Ferrari 458 vs a Honda Civic special edition equipped with kids seats....

You may want to post a Mark Toia style test on a DSLR site to enlighten them what quality is about.

To be fair the OP didn't say much of anything and the Vimeo seems to be focused on the destination, without much attention to getting there in comfort, with ease and style. ;-) However, if all you can manage is a Honda then I see no reason to covet the Ferrari. Unless of course you enjoy being miserable.

I don't get the point of the "test" or why you would post it. If this were a 5d site I might think it was about "Misery loves company." But posted here it looks like a kick me sign... Or a troll. I don't say that to accuse anybody. As I stated, I don't get the point.

The forums and net in general is full of this stuff - like the GH2 vs Epic I mentioned earlier - http://vimeo.com/30751603

Personally, I think it's just the nature of the way people view things - look how many posts are in the Scarlet area about very basic things... but, a lot of these could be answered by understanding both the camera - the system and the whole process a little more - and not charging ahead, full speed,

If a user thinks there's no point to having a Scarlet (or Epic) and that the 5D/7D/GH1/GH2/C300/FS100/AF100 etc will give them what they need/require in image quality or performance, then great - they've saved a lot of cash :)

It took only four posts to prove out my fears about this thread. I see no percentage in making this an us and them statement. No one hates the 5D or people who use it to shoot video.

Secondly, I think it's important to remember that the point of this forum IS to help people understand the camera. Questions about the Scarlet are the point. I agree folks might check the manual before asking some questions but this forum is here so that we may all learn.

I know you're probably not trolling or anything and just wanted to conduct a simple test. You see the first problem would be vimeo's encoding and the fact that the scarlet is actually 4k RAW and the 5d is 1080. If your title was "5D vs Scarlet delivery for vimeo" and if you didnt grade the footage at all, this test would be somewhat accurate. Comparing a 4k RAW camera with a 1080 camera is pointless. You can compare the Scarlet to the Alexa or the C300 because that would actually be an interesting test but even then you cannot compare them on vimeo and you cannot compare them on lowlight capabilities.
What I do with my one week old scarlet I can never do with my 2 year old 5D.
You can easily make a test by capturing a tiff of a video from a scarlet with matching resolution. Do the same for the 5D. Then magnify both images multiple times and compare.

PS. even with your flawed test, the scarlet is the winner.

Check and see my postings - I've helped and informed quite a few people and will continue to do so!

It's just that many people are jumping into the Scarlet and missing the basics (stuff like when you monitor in RAW you don't see ISO/WB changes - as you're seeing the native sensor output).

My post was exactly that - a comment that there's a lot of mis-understanding as the Scarlet has opened up a new type of user to teh RED workflow... and that, if OP's are happy with other cameras, then that's OK too... as it's the work that's important - not the tool.

But, there is so much obsession at the moment about proving something cheaper is better... in some instances it is - in others, it isn't.

So - I don't really see what you mean?
