  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet update in mid-May

I, for one will be shocked and flabergasted if there remains any scarlet configuration that is ready to shoot for under $5k. Amazed if this still exists after the next update that actually releases any update on price, configurations and status.
Sadly, I'd have to agree with you, and, considering past price increases, if there's another, the figure might be closer to $6,000.

Realistically for a practical shooting package, the current versions of Scarlet 2/3" will all work out more in the EX-1, EX-3 price range. Based on what they have announced prices for so far, I'm estimating $8-10k for a Scarlet Cinema before lenses for what I would need, $8k being pretty bare bones.

What parts do you figure are essential for your needs bare bones for the Cinema? (Just curious what others are considering their bare minimum).

Cinema Brain
Side CF module
Baseplate and 15mm rails for lens support
Side Handle
Redmote
At least 4 batteries and charger
At least 2 64GB CF cards
Red Station CF reader
PL mount
C-mount
2.8" LCD
Zacuto Z-finder pro (poor mans EVF)
Matte box and basic selection of ND, and circ pola filters

This I consider the bare essentials to cover a full day of location shooting based on past experience with other cameras.
I am adding to this about $6k for purchase, servicing, and mount conversions of used 16mm lenses. A little over $3k actually invested in them so far.
I also did a comparison fitting out the camera to closely match the built in features of the new Sony PMW-350 with an ENG grade B4 servo zoom lens and the estimate was close to the Sony's price, around $20k.

This is not what I would call a "prosumer" price range camera. The fixed comes off a bit better in that respect. But it still will offer exceptional features and performance for its price. Obviously we don't have all the details yet to price it out accurately.

Sadly? Come on, consider your options at the same price range. How much is an EX3? Even at 6K with the options and specs the camera will have it's a bargain. I'm not a fanboy and I am looking forward to what the other camera companies will come up with to challenge the Scarlet.

+1 on reservations. I'm ready to drop some cash NOW! :)

This is too funny.

No, I agree with you. But I also didn't consider the 2/3 Cinema prosumer myself either. (And agreed, not that it's not worth the value). I've toyed off and on with the 2/3 cinema but at the end of the day, I'd really just want the S35 anyways. Since I don't have any investment in 16mm glass.

I do have a question that I've actually not really been able to ascertain. Given the pixel & sensor size difference between the S35 and the 2/3, for a given depth of field at a given field of view (so obviously different lens and different aperature settings required), how much slower will the S35 be, if that makes sense.

The Scarlet Fixed is $4750

The Scarlet Cinema 2/3 brain only is $2750

Although that does bring about a good question. #32 says Rugged aluminum or magnesium body. Does the magnesium body cost more and is it available on the fixed as well? Also, what is the difference between those two in terms of weight, strength.

I'm getting kind of tired of this argument. True, no other company is coming close to the price of fixed Scarlet. But its price has increased 58% since it was first announced, percentage-wise probably the biggest increase of any model. That amounts to a lot of additional kit that won't fit into many people's gear budgets. And it may not be over yet. At what point will the price no longer be okay? That's a legitimate question everyone contemplating the fixed has to ask him- or herself.

It's also not even close to the same camera either that was originally planned. I think it is a legitimate question, no doubt, but even from my perspective, with the additional features, the extra cost is worth it. If they were worthless features I could understand, but to me, they are awesome. I don't think the price will change again unless something even more awesome has been added. Is that a worry? Yes and no. Depends on what they add.

Somebody asked Jarred if they were going to release both aluminum and magnesium and this was his answer:

Both mechanical versions are going through extensive thermal and environmental testing right now.. So we need to wait till those are done before we know which way it will go.

Sounds like they will only pick one or the other.

"Everything in life changes........." pretty much says it all. Don't like the price, don't buy it. Seems pretty simple.

To me, that's more of RED's concern than any one individual's. If they have to price it out of your range in order to make a profit, then you will buy something else and they lose a customer. No one is forcing you to buy it and RED has continuously and constantly said (say it with me, now) "Everything is subject to change." Why won't people hear and believe that? Even visionaries can't see into the future and so RED has made it clear they will keep adjusting things as they learn more.

Every individual has to decide what features and capabilities they demand and what those are worth. You can't blame RED for wanting to be profitable. Personally, I'd fault them for pricing their products in such a way that they end up closing their doors. Then where will all their loyal buyers be?

IMHO, right now in the marketplace, the Scarlet 2/3" fixed is better than cameras costing around $8K. If the Scarlet fixed package ends up at $7K or less, it is still a camera worthy of buying.
