  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet update in mid-May

So what's going on Jarred? Is the Scarlet Update indefinitely post-poned? Or are we likely to see something this month?

You need to pay more attention to RECON;

We still do not have enough of an accurate timeline to give you the SCARLET Mid-May " When is it going to be done " update that you are all waiting for... so as a bit of an interlude:

1 What is the focal length of Fixed 2/3" Scarlet?

FF35 Equivalent of 28mm-224mm.

2 If #21 is something, what is it (besides the most talked about feature released on November 31st)?

#21 is indeed something and it has a mind of it's own :)

It is still far enough out that you need not worry about it right now. It is however worth the recognition that it mysteriously has received :)

3 What priority will RED One owners have over those who have been saving all funding for Scarlets/tons of modules?

RED ONE owners who have not executed their cameras for Stages 1-3 of the EPIC program will have a short window of priority on Scarlet packages.

4 What is the current weight of the Fixed Scarlet/lens?

Current weight of Fixed Scarlet is just over 4.5 pounds.

5 What kind of success have you had with firing up the Scarlet and taking motion/stills on the Scarlet? (image quality compared to the EPIC/boot up times)

Scarlet 8x is first to be brought up in the lab. It is still in engineering form, not "run around and take pictures form". Think of a mini-Franky. There is alot of effort is going into the autofocus algorithms and lens optimization, and alot of waiting for bits of code to come down from it's big brother. The ASIC, Sensor and Lens work have been complete ( the hard parts ), but there is still alot of firmware work to be done and some minor mechanical changes waiting on tooling.

The images coming off of it are incredible.. remember, the 2/3rds sensor is part of the Mysterium-X family, and you all know what that looks like.

6 Will 120fps recording be possible on the CF-Modules or will another recording device be necessary?

120fps is working on the CF-Module with 64GB cards at a reduced REDCODE rate. The highest REDCODE number you can use with the CF cards are still being determined as optimization work is progressing.

7 Will the read/reset of the 2/3 be on par with the epic?

The read/reset will be on par to the read/reset times of EPIC S35.

8 How much difference in dynamic range should the 2/3 have in comparison with epic?

Compared to the EPIC S35 they will be close. The actual delta changes every day, as both systems continue to independently improve.

9 How does EPIC's delivery date effect the 2/3" Fixed Scarlet's release?

Scarlet Fixed 2/3" is currently behind EPIC and likely will be for the forseable future. Some things are caught up, but as a whole it is a step or two behind it as it inherits a good portion of EPIC's development efforts.

10 What is the biggest change to Scarlet since the last announcement that makes you excited?

The autofocus is actually the most impressive work going on right now... Nobody has seen autofocus on a video camera work like this before, and it is pretty impressive to actually see it work. Of course #21 is pretty incredible. And the (optional) Titanium Lens mount is pretty cool.

SELFISH QUESTION #11: Could I have my Scarlet finished in Silver just as your RED #10? I'd like to name it "High Yo Silver"

Kind of... the side"cosmetic" pieces on Scarlet are removable.. and you can get different finishes. I can't remember if we officially mentioned that before for the 2/3"...... but you can. But please... No pink.
Hopefully these questions were "good". :) :emote_popcorn:

You need to pay more attention to RECON;

I believe you are the one that needs to pay attention.

I am well aware of the 10 Questions post. However, if you look back along this thread, you will notice that those questions were requested by Jarred, to hold everyone over until RED was able to present the announcement.

The 10 questions is obviously not the BIG SCARLET UPDATE.

And I was not asking when Scarlet will be ready (3 years of following RED has rendered such questions obsolete), I was asking when the ANNOUNCEMENT will be ready.

Reading through this, I may come across as aggressive (which is not the intention) but I don't have time to edit the post, so just take my word for it when I say that I'm not trying to be aggressive...unlike certain individuals on this thread (we all know who that is  )

To sum up:

I was aware of 10 questions update

I am simply awaiting some ACTUAL news...

I'll just quote the opening...

With the following question...

...I don't know how he could answer it differently if they still don't know the when.

I'm now confused, is he referring to when the Scarlet is going to be done, or when the Scarlet Update is going to be done.

In either case, that post was a week ago right? So either way, my question is valid, answered or not.

The announcement was originally to be more on the "when" specifics of the Scarlet. They don't have an accurate telling yet, which I am guessing is due to the engineers needing to get through a few trials right now.

I'd say Jarred can't tell you when he'll have the announcement for the same reason he can't yet give you the news...they need a few things to happen in R&D for him to know something to then give you in turn.

"Hey guys, I hope to have something up by end of the day Sunday, Jarred" or "Hey guys, its not going to happen this weekend, but definitely by X, Jarred" or "Hey folks, here is the current state of things, here is what we know... Jarred"

He never said those, but that is what it would sound like if he did.

Hi everybody
Im new active member of reduser.net forum.

Im term of Scarlet, camera for which I wait since 2008, only I can say is: this form is very similar to forums about aliens. Everybody wrote very severely and with many of details about something we expect one day.

Im apologize about my english. It is not my native l.

Homeboy at the booth said they're having problems with the fixed lens and getting it to work the way they want but they have 3 interchangeable prototypes that are running like champs and shooting gorgeous footage. It appears like they'd like to release both at the same time.

Either way when people walked by and heard six months after Epics, they got turned off by the idea. But honestly at this point I'm prepared for the worst. I have a camera and plenty of gigs to keep me afloat until the big day. It's a waste of time dreaming and guessing when that day will be, so go fucking shoot something.

I thought it'd be useful information cause from the previous posts people have made, it seems like everyone has projects coming up (Summer/Fall) that they'd like to use a new Scarlet. Personally you guys should simmer down, it'll get here when it gets here. After three years you should be use to this and should know better. The Red team is doing what they can and my guess is they're at the last stages putting some spit and polish.

First I'd like to say I am in no hurry for Scarlet to be released as we have 2 RED cameras and we love them. And honestly the longer Scarlet takes to come out the better for us as we can keep making money on the RED one before the market gets saturated with Scarlets... :sifone: ...but having said that, I don't believe it's wise to keep pushing back the release date of EPIC/scarlet constantly....improvement can and will always happen...no product will ever be perfect and you can spend a lifetime tweaking and adding functions....but all this is pointless if you never release the product. It's no different than your film or piece of art...as an artist you will never be totally satisfied and you will always find a way to improve it...but at some point you just have to release your movie and move on (well unless you are George Lucas, then you can keep coming back to it and adding one extra scene and have millions of suckers re buy your movies 5 times.... :ihih:) The market is not the same as 3 yrs ago. Today we have Panasonic, Sony, Canon and Nikon all jumping on the bandwagon of S35 film making....while none of them come close to achieving what RED has done, it's good enough for a lot of other people and are affordable enough to be a real threat to Scarlet and even possibly Epic. I would personally not buy a product form any of them and will be sticking with Red Epic/scarlet...but that is just me...But the competition is getting stiffer and it would be foolish to ignore it (iphone-android battle comes to mind...)

Either way, I'll be happy when the Epic will be released and will most certainly add a Scarlet to our arsenal down the road...

Obviously the software for the fixed is more complex than for the cinema model. I would love if they would go ahead release the Cinema model when its ready even if the fixed lags behind.

I don't think that is obvious. And I also don't think it is true. The cinema model controls canon and nikon lenses with interchangeable mounts. I would think the software for the Cinema would be a little more complex to make sure the methods used from a variety of lens work okay with the nikon and the canon mounts.

At least working with the fixed, it is ONE lens therefore pretty straightforward.

Not exactly true because as I understand it the Epic uses that same firmware to control Nikon and Canon lenses as the Scarlet Cinema will.

So with the mounts now being completely tested and working as stated about a week ago, I could imagine this story to have some form of validity.

Well said, all in all until now there is no affordable raw motion picture camera available on the market.. you really can't shoot non-raw format and call it a true digital cinema workflow.. just a compromise.. just seen dng files from Ikonoskop, put in light room,, they look awesome.. I would not notice much difference between three or four generations of canon dslrs.. more sensitivity and more dr.. fine.. I can still rely on my 400D that is four generations behind and still get nice images..
for me, yeah I would really dream to have the best camera in the world that have all convenience that exeed my needs.. Just give me mid-sized sensor raw motion picture camera at HD res with manual exposure controls, light metering for +/-, frame rate dial to max 30 fps, double the size and weight of scarlet, any lens or lens mount, max 800 iso and tiny lcd screen under $5K and voila I'm happy to call this the best digital cinema camera in the globe.. coz simply there isn't any..
companies should give respect to filmmakers giving them tools shooting raw and not h264 video.. and forget about people saying how unreliable your camera is.. RED ONE found its way being the best digital cinema camera on the market with the upgradeable firmware..
one of the things made me think highly of RED is a question asked when entering this forum, it was: are you familiar with raw format dslr cameras? that raw is the real concept behind any professional photography or cinematography..
I know that all this is non-sense while this company already have chosen the long way.. and we all waits..

Yes, surely the Fixed will be complete first. Interchangeable/Cinema is after all a Fixed with modules removed and made compatible with a bunch of lenses and mounts. Especially with complex autofocus algorithms and whatnot, it could be tricky.

I have a feeling the Scarlet hardware is 99% ready, and there's just a massive amount of software work to be done. Also, like Jarred mentioned, a lot of the software would be inherited from the Epic. So, the release of Epic seems like a major milestone for the Scarlet development.
