  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet update in mid-May

I think the lack of a mid-may announcement really hurt my confidence in Red as a company. The scarlet saga has gone on for quite a long time, and the extreme delays never helped boost the image of Red as a company.

I like, everyone here, am very excited for the Scarlet. However, there are some concerns I have in investing as much money as it requires to purchase a product into this company. I think the way they have handled the Scarlet camera represents certain unreliable qualities of the company.

A friend of mine owns a Red One. He makes money off of it, and wants to continue to make money off of it. He did not purchase an EVF when he purchased the camera but now has the money and desire to do so. However, he cannot purchase the old viewfinder from red and the new one is not available. When asked when it would be available they told him they don't know, but not for a few months. This lack of information and reliable updates on products discourages me from investing 10K or 17K or 28K into a company. It also makes people like my friend feel somewhat taken.

I think Red needs to start acting a little bit more professional in regards to its products. For someone like me, and probably most people reading this forum, the scarlet is a camera that we are all looking forward to. 10 Questions is not an update, nor does it make the company seem more reliable. Don't announce anymore deadlines you can't meet.

You know, we can clearly see that there are two different groups of people.

1) Those who wish RED would shut it and not be as open with the development process.

2) Those who have been been enjoying the inside look at what the RED team currently knows as we wait (sometimes participating in the devleopment by bouncing their ideas off of RED), some even for the past 2 1/2 years.

I think the only way you can please one without counting the other out, is for group one to not read the threads at REDuser. What do you guys think?

For many that have a RED One, they have something to make them happy right now while also learning more about their filmmaking.

Those that don't have a RED and don't want to read the updates have a great place over at DVXuser to learn without having to filter through the updates.

And those like me, who enjoy hearing the latest and what RED sees at the time can continue hanging out here at REDuser.

Not being rude or trying to tell people that we don't want them here, I am just trying to get all parties to be pleased.

I am not certain if what Mr. Hutson wrote was in response to me, but I am going to assume it is. I have never been been to DVXuser nor am I a frequent forum poster as you can see by my number of posts. I simply had a desire to express myself to the community as well as to possible employees of red.

I am not part of any party. I am simply stating my concern about the current state of Red and the future of Red. Your comments about Red One as well as about the forum communicate to me that you immediately stopped considering what I was typing because of pre-conceived stereotypes.

Re-read my post. I think the approach that "all information is subject to change" can only be taken so far when dealing with potential and current customers.

Example: Fixed Scarlet is the only thing mentioned in the "update". Have you seen any mention of the Scarlet S35? They don't mention it like a bad student doesn't mention a subject to a teacher because it might cause them to ask about the homework they failed to complete.

Autofocus? Why do we as filmmakers care about autofocus? Name one film set you have ever been on that would even CONSIDER using autofocus.

My point is that this 10 question update reveals more through what they didn't say than what they did. Their answers to current customers relating to product availbability reveals more through what they don't say than what they do. I am a person who has been excited about the camera for a long time. I am simply stating that this mid-may announcement, or lack there of, really hurt my confidence in this company. I think this approach is the wrong approach to take and it is alienating customers or potential customers. I simply want to help Red by stating this fact.

then that camera is not for you, and the s35 is still a ways away, they never said it was a scarlet s35 announcement. The s35 is further behind the 2/3", so I would assume it won't be out until a bit after the 2/3" is released. Knowing red this is not your normal auto focus, but if you think they are putting all this work into same consumer level auto focus then I don't think you get who they are as a company.

Just read some of Jim's posts, this is not about making money but making the best camera possible. If they feel it needs more time I'm going to listen to them, I understand how people are upset over the very open way red has brought us into the development of these camera's. I on the other hand love it, yeah it's frustrating but so is life, sometimes I wonder how some of the complainers actually function in the real world.

Yeah, you can probably blame that on me. Jarred told me that I could ask 10 questions about anything and that he'd answer them. Due to me knowing that the S35 Scarlet was pretty much the same besides delivery date, framerates, and datarates...I chose to ask about the Fixed Scarlet instead. We really hadn't heard anything about it except that it was coming out 2 months after EPIC Stage 2, so I was quite curious about things like focal length and such. ;)

I am simply stating that this mid-may announcement, or lack there of, really hurt my confidence in this company.

If your confidence is hurt, you can put your confidence in a separate (more expensive company) to get the results you need. I will gladly wait while they get things right.

Red never set any final dates (estimates but nothing set in stone), I'm sorry to say but that was all on you. I know we are all excited by the new system but blaming them for your over anxiousness and purchasing an accessory to a camera that is not coming out anywhere near the time you purchased it.

when I was younger I was convinced I could smoke all I wanted cause we would cure it by the time I was older (i was a fool I know).... maybe I should start complaining to my local minister of health. assumptions are the mother of all screw ups.

Unlike your smoking comment I'm smart enough to know that I can use the lenses I purchase on cameras other than the Scarlet S35.
Wasn't blaming Red for a purchase of something I use and enjoy all the time was just wishing I had a shiny new S35 and felt bummed that I can't get one.

sometimes people get frustrated and lose sight of the big picture .. if they did not care about RED they would just move on but they do and they have a different way of showing it

to you self proclaimed employees and moderators ..i seriously doubt RED approves of you telling potential customers who will spend 20-50k + to get lost

so take your own medicine

if you dont approve of their post ignore it or dont read it

the RED team has a lot of experience dealing with many different personality types and im sure they take everything said with a grain of salt

:nono:

Its understandable why are some members so intolerant to criticism, but if there were no declarations (taken as promises) there would have been no expectations and no disappointments.
A friend from Bangladesh had to wait for 2 years and a visit to USA to get some peripherals from Red.

You need a Sony.

I think it's safe to say that this thread has run its course.

To sum up:

RED announced a Mid-May Announcement

It hasn't happened because they are waiting on some info

Some people are getting impatient with delays and are losing faith in RED

Other people understand that, unlike other companies, RED is transparent about they're R&D process and are willing to keep us informed every step of the way, creating for some, the illusion that they are behind schedule compared to other companies. In fact, this is not the case, RED are simply keeping us informed, and we actually hear about delays, unlike other companies, who won't announce a product, until its fully developed.

Once again: "EVERYTHING IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE, COUNT ON IT"

Perhaps its time for a Moderator to shut this thread. Mid-May announcement has not happened, RED bashing has ensued, ergo, this thread is futile.

Yup...good summary Ameer. And in closing, tattoos should be shooting in a couple of days in NYC.

REDUSER's better buckle their seat belts - the ride is about to get crazy wild...

Uh, except you neglected to mention that there was a rather significant and informative "non-announcement" in, loosely speaking, mid-May.

Please do enlighten me...

EDIT: My bad. You were talking about the 10 questions...

My apologies...
