  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet update in mid-May

I always buy my cpu's with a lower clock speed and overclock them to save money. However, you do need the cooling power to handle it.

However, that relies on the manufacturer having more good chips than they can sell so they have to sell fast chips at a lower clock speed. Back when I was working in the chip business we were selling every one of our high speed chips so you could pretty much guarantee that you'd never be able to reliably overclock one of our $200 products to the same speed as one of our $2000 products.

A quick guess must be more compact and cheaper ASICs as a tradeoff for framerates. In addition, yes, the lower clocked chips will definitely end up in the Scarlet.

Don't forget, the ASICs are just CMOS designs as well and are inherent to the same manufacturing statistics as the optical sensor. The same speed bottlenecks are present. It would not surprise me if some of the same ASICs are used in both designs as well. (or all their DSMC camera designs).

The recent thrust of this thread with respect to chips from the same design being simultaneously funneled into both high and lower speed designs suggests that Scarlet is a necessary part of the RED business plan and any rumors , which I have seen on other sites, that Scarlet will be cancelled in the face of increasingly competitive HDSLR and large chip prosummer cam designs is probably not true.

2/3"/16mm sized image format is a very robust and popular standard on its own. It needs no justification for its existence vis a vis 35mm anything. It is the most widely used broadcast production format in the world.
DSLR's will not make a significant dent in its popularity because they are not practical general purpose video production cameras in any respect.
Scarlet will be a true game changer in the 2/3" market, able to shoot native digital cinema widescreen format without cropping at well beyond HD resolution. It is a professional level practical general purpose production camera and lowers the entry level price range for this format by at least two thirds. Its nearest competitors price wise are in the $20k range.

Chips Smips, the only announcement I really wanted to hear or cared about when this thread was started was when!

No timeline/launch info at this point just makes me sad : (

Just curious - would you rather have totally made-up facts or no information at all? Cuz my sense it that there are several issues outstanding that currently preclude anyone (yes, ANYONE - even Jim and Jarred) from making accurate predictions right now. I sincerely doubt that they are jerking our chains; not telling us just as a power trip.

It's kind of like death - everyone knows it is going to happen, but for most people, for most of their lives, trying to figure out WHEN is nothing but guessing. Thankfully for us, we will most assuredly come to a day when accurate predictions can, and thus WILL, be forthcoming (about Scarlet, not death!). Personally, I'd rather have no information than just nonsense. But that's just me.

I'm sure Red is thrilled with that marketing analogy! :-)

Maybe soon RED will say they can predict death, subject to change.

Terry, that's a funny analysis...

I do think the "$5K and under competition" cut down the window of opportunity Red originally had to maximize their original Scarlet 2/3" sales potential by a figure of 10!

They may be able to recoup half of that lost market share, but, ultimately it has to suck knowing you could have been there first ...

Lucky for Red, anybody on this forum knows the difference in quality is ultimately worth waiting for or trading to, however...

:banghead:

There is an ol' adage.
Fast, Cheap, and Good; pick any two.

They offer amazing products for a fraction of the price that the competition offers there product. Therefore I understand the delays in production.

I would rather them not say anything anymore until the camera is really going to launch.

We are all on board with the Epic/Scarlet/Red One.

It's just to disappointing to hear that there is going to be a big "mid-May" update and then get nothing.

very cool,
Are there any recent pictures of the Scarlet?

I still have a lot of 'em from RED Day, but I don't know if that's what you are wanting.

also, I wouldn't be surprised if Jarred were to throw a pic up of the setup he has when he shoots the footage with a Scarlet next weekend. :emote_popcorn:

This time last year it sounded like the Scarlet was going to be released late last winter.

I held off from purchasing a Red One because I was/am super excited about the S35 Scarlet.

I went as far to even purchased the 18-50 zoom lens and a couple primes last Oct in anticipation of the S35 release.

I've basically been waiting on pins an needles along with everyone else on this forum.

So when I saw "Big mid-May update" I guess I assumed to much.

Had I known before that I more than likely wont be able to get my hands on a Scarlet until 2011 at the earliest makes me wish I bought a Red One last year.

There was nothing wrong or bad about the 10 questions it's nice to hear new info and specs but, I was already sold on the program ever since they first announced the specs of the S35. There is nothing that they say that is going to make me want it more than I already do.

So the answer is yes to your question, "Short of saying you can order your Scarlet immediately" any other update except the one that says I can finally purchase it will probably bum me out.

Red never set any final dates (estimates but nothing set in stone), I'm sorry to say but that was all on you. I know we are all excited by the new system but blaming them for your over anxiousness and purchasing an accessory to a camera that is not coming out anywhere near the time you purchased it.

when I was younger I was convinced I could smoke all I wanted cause we would cure it by the time I was older (i was a fool I know).... maybe I should start complaining to my local minister of health. assumptions are the mother of all screw ups.
