  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet update in mid-May

Jim and the RED team know that the S35 Scarlet is going to be a super hot item and everyone will be getting one...a LOT more so than the S35 EPIC.

During the talk among 10-15 people that I got to be a part of with Jim, he said something like "Just because others might make a camera like the EPIC with a slightly smaller counterpart and sell the little brother for a few less $K doesn't mean I have to." Now, that's not really a quote but rather a paraphrase of what he was getting across.

They know that the S35 is going to be what everyone wants, but there will be those high-end applications in which people want more frame rates at the full 5K. Those framerates just get a bit more pricey.

For those who'd rather rent the S35 EPIC while owning the S35 Scarlet, you get to see the beauty of RED's modular DSMC system...

So Joseph in your opinion, will we see a Scarlet S35 before a 2/3 Scarlet?

I'm pretty sure the schedule is for the 2/3" to come out first, but that (as everything) can change. More will be known with the next Scarlet announcement. We'll see if Joseph knows more :)

Anyone else's heart skip a beat when they visit the homepage and look at the recon forum hoping for it to be a scarlet update of some kind? haha Its been happening latley, loving the element of surprise! ;)

HAHA

Busted!

I just finished up a small job that I wasn't expecting and have a couple $k more waiting to blow on a Scarlet.

MURDER!

But I wonder what I will do when they take reservations with no timeline???? It will depend on the amount I guess.

TIMELINE!

but yeah, keep checking recon, and then I go into it, just in case the main site is faulty, lol.

I am too busy to keep doing this to myself! haha

One other point regarding Epic v s35..... the sensors that get produced are not all the same quulity. I would guess that the lower rated sensors will end up in the s35 and the top end in the Epic.

If this is the case.... that is a glimmer of hope in getting s35 a little quicker than I hoped. It would be another difference to justify the price gap (although I would like to see how they would market that particular difference!)

I'm not following you. The EPIC IS an s35 camera...

Jim where are you? waitin and waitin and nothing happens!

Update in mid may 2011,...

Jim is currently on a leave of absence for health reasons....

Just relax, Jarred is going to take good care of us until Jim is back which should be in about a month. Patience my friend.

There never was a 15th date set.. Just mid-may. We are still waiting on a few pieces of information to come forth before we can lay it all out for you.

Thanks for your patience :)

I meant Epic s35 v Scarlet s35

The top grade s35 sensors would go in the Epic s35... the lower grade s35 sensors will go in the Scarlet s35.

Epic-X boasted 'Mysterium-X Select' sensors at one point, but I doubt that there will really be any difference between them. It's more the processing power of the brains that is the difference (Scarlet can only process something like 400 megapixels per second whereas Epic can do around 1.3 gigapixels per second).

Actually, is is VERY possible that they are in fact the same sensors and speed binned on how fast they can operate.

There is typically quite a bit of other support circuitry on the sensor die, and if they are really pushing the silicon speed, the EPIC S35 needs might be only a very small percentage of what they get out of fab. Typically extremely high speed chips target a single process corner to get the fastest operation there, and then the slower corners are used to produce a slower model.

It's not just the support circuitry in the rest of the system.

Chip design is done using statistical analysis of process variation. They typically take a 6-sigma approach around a typical result. This means there are probabilities involved in what you will get back on each wafer AND across each wafer. The distribution is a Gaussian distribution. The harder the requirements, the smaller section of that curve will produce a usable die. There is always a balance in chip design between wrangling in variance in your calculations or just taking a hit on product since if you factor in ALL variation possibilities, it would be impossible to design a chip that always worked in every die at high speeds.

So if their sensors were like 1 epic produced for every 10 scarlet, you can see that the epic, on cost value, is 10x since you have to produce 10x as many to get that number that work for your application.

Well I guess no Mid May update. I think I might have to move on and buy a 5D, I don't want to but I am going to start filming by the fall and I've already waited almost a year and a half for Scarlet.

Sad decision.

I feel the same way then I rant and rave to get it out but in the end it will be here when its here.

Its good to have a camera to learn on in the mean time it will make you better and when the day comes you will be able to coax great things from your scarlet.

Use what's currently available, hone your skills, and upgrade if possible once Scarlet finally makes it to market. Whenever that is. Seems reasonable to me.
