  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet update in mid-May

I was out shooting yesterday, I'm not letting a camera delay slow me down. I own many cameras and will be happy to add a Scarlet to my collection when it is ready. They just did NAB and had a Red day and here people are still bitchin' for updates? They have been updating us as far as I can tell. With the worlds economies in crisis Red has a new set of problems to deal with that 2 years ago was not on anyone's radar. No one is forcing you to buy these cameras here. RED has a shipping product so buy it and stop bitching. Did Oren Peli, who made Paranormal Activity sit around waiting for a Scarlet or did he just go out and shoot with a FX1? he went out and shot. A Camera is not going to make your movie for you. Red is not holding you back. You have freedom of choice. I'm spending my time waiting working with what I have, not what I wished I had. I can wait for a fully working Scarlet Vs a buggy rushed one now.

No one asked for an update it was announced by Jim. I think people want to hear one thing "It's out."

its not the fact i wont shoot with another camera ..

its the fact i keep being told my camera sucks hardcore and my work will be amateur at best till i have a scarlet / epic
and that might be true

and you know how many times ive heard go buy another camera

your not Ted, Jim or Jarred , so why dont you shut the hell up?

if this was open discussion wouldn't it be more like

.. in mid may we are waiting for so and so to happen .. i will confirm it then

??

because if it does not happen .. there is no update

it makes me sad but i think i have to divorce RED ..lol :frown2:

I can't help but note that you have made your dissatisfaction known, loud and clear, many (many!) times. Yes, you might be the customer (maybe), assuming, of course that you decide to buy. Until you buy, however, you are, like the rest of us, a PROSPECTIVE customer. And yes, your decision to NOT buy or buy, will impact RED but, in the case of ANY individual, only to a very small degree.

There are people like me, shooting with their current camera (in my case a JVC HD110) who will wait for Scarlet. And, there are many people (maybe you?) who will choose NOT to wait. As others have pointed out, everyone is free to do whatever is in their own best interest. That goes for you as well. If you don't want to "put up" with RED's way of communicating, perhaps you'd lower your blood pressure if you stayed off the forum and just waited until you hear the announcements in the general industry press.

Personally, I find it kind of fun to be in on the whole development thread; hearing about things as they happen. And, since I don't have a desperate need for the camera today, I haven't let the anxieties of waiting get in the way of that excitement. The way I figure it, the camera is very likely to be far ahead of anything else available when it is released. If it isn't, then I can choose to buy whatever surpasses it. It certainly promises to be way ahead of anything I could buy today, so why would I want to "give up" on waiting? I am just going to enjoy the journey.

Peace!

many, many times ??

Ive defended red on other forums .. there is a huge number of people out shooting with the camera i own

and they laugh , at the dozen or so active guys on here waiting like lap dogs

while dogging real cameras

you want to call me out .. o k thats fair but you are an snarky know it all prick

good luck being a cinematographer you should probably to stick to 1 & 0's

oh yea another thing , what have you contributed to the process really??

gimme a break .

you dog 7-d and Alexa .. what a joke

Chris, you seem to be bipolar at times in your posts. I've seen you bash red one day on dvxuser, while praising them the next on scarletuser...

At any rate, your tone is becoming increasingly harsh, and you tend to err on the side of getting personal.

Please put a bit more thought into your posts in the future... passionate debate and productive discussion is one thing, but I think most all of us are pretty fed up with the increasing hostility around the boards lately. Please try to represent yourself, and the site in a more courteous manner moving forward. Everyone.

thanks.

Chris,I can understand your strongly expressed frustration but please take a breath, for the empathic amongst us(me at least!) your recent posts here give me palpitations!
Fwiw, I`m head of a team designing and building a new no constraint supercar from the ground up and we conceived it would take a year or so..in fact it`s nigh on three times that now because we are prototyping against conventional automotive wisdom and totally unexpected and unforseen challenges that absolutely cannot be got round or overlooked arise during this `new territory`development. Please be patient with Red,i think their process and obstacles are similar in nature to my own project hurdles. If they could have delivered Scarlet six months or a year ago i guarantee they would have.

P.S Chris, if in a year or so you find yourself in Blightly come and join us in final testing and as we scream up the highway accelerating 2200 lbs with 1200 bhp at over 2g (observing posted speed limits of course) we can laugh wildly at the distant memory of the frustrations we sometimes held while the Red team were baking Scarlet, all the while capturing ourselves at 120fps.

I think it's time to take it down a notch. Getting upset and vulgar is not going to get your point across and will get you dismissed by people.

The fact is, people ARE asking for an update, which is WHY this topic got started. I was on the initial thread that Jim responded to that another announcement was coming. If you do a little searching, you will see that people ask REGULARLY in MANY threads, many times off-topic in those threads, about an update.

I definitely understand the frustration, but the truth is, I do NOT see another camera for $5k right now that offers me what the Scarlet will, and I don't want to shoot on anything less. That's how much I have available RIGHT NOW to purchase a camera.

Surely if something came along that had those specs and that price, I would DEFINITELY look at it, but there isn't. Again, there is more vaporhardware from Sony and Panasonic. Again, I'll believe it when I see it.

Like others here, I DID buy a camera in the meantime that is NO WHERE near as good as the Scarlet, and suffers from MANY limiting factors. What it does do is give me EXCELLENT DR/LOW LIGHT sensitivity which is something that I am looking forward to. I also use it to make money.

These cameras in theory are faster, more featureful and cheaper than ANYTHING on the market. I understand their pain as an engineer knowing that pushing these bounds will cause set backs. They are trying to tackle MULTIPLE issues in one camera. Not to mention, multiple cameras.

I continue to wait and hope that their release schedule converges. However, divorcing Red just means you are going to be lonely, because there are no other cameras in that dating pool that currently live up to those standards. You'll just have to lower your standards and get a trophy camera :)

Well said. I wonder how many people that "need" Scarlet now even have something solid to shoot, or a sound kit, lights ?.. I'm just sayin...

I wasn't going to post much in this thread, but oh well...

Ha- if you're looking for that sorta certainty you're looking at the wrong company. To wit:

Better to just enjoy the ride.

For most of us that have bought another camera in the interim for Scarlet, it's been a fun ride. I bought the Sony Z1U about a year and a half ago and have paid for it several times over all while building my clientele base considerably.

We've known for a long time that RED isn't making a Scarlet 1.0. There are working to get not only a 3K camera with a fixed lens, but also a wide array of modules to be interchangeable with the EPIC line of cameras. People will easily be able to buy the Scarlet, and rent the EPIC on certain special days...all with the ease of knowing virtually the same camera and workflow.

When you have shown me a company that is attempting to do the same thing while continually revising their software and giving free "builds" and has already released all their stuff which includes a 3K camera for under $5K that shoots to a codec as good as REDCODE RAW with a 2/3" sensor or more, then I may begin to look into another company.

IF we ever came to that, it would be kind and respectful to not be complaining publicly in Jim's house. Maybe just send an email to the customer service reps? They would be the ones to complain to. Not other RED customers or potential RED customers. I don't see how complaining on REDuser will be a benefit to any parties involved.

Just sayin...

By the way, thanks Jim and Co for the updates whenever you might get a chance or get some news from your engineers...

I'm holding onto my NAB 2011 prediction in mass quantity, after all backorders are cleared out... Nobody's happy about the slipping Scarlet release dates, especially RED, but they have a helluva product in EPIC and after all, we all benefit from it's successful launch...

Any Scarlet shipping before then is just a pleasant surprise and should be viewed as a great technology advancement for the price...

And I'm certain Red is aware of the competition promising BIGGER sensors by then for similar pricepoints, though with lower frame rates, crappy codecs and consumer bitrates to PRESERVE their High End product margins... It will be interesting, and Graemme will be busy chap late this and early next year as the comparisons roll in...

Since Jim need a month off I don't espect to see any info update in a while. As much as I would like to get an update on the Scarlet, I really hope he take the time off to get well. If we do get Scarlet info soon it wouldnt make me sad thoe=)

About the deadlines. The vision of the epic and scarlet have changed and gotten bigger with much more features. It would not be realistic if the production would not take more time. Most on this forum know "the drill" that anything can change and also the deliverydates. Im a "self torture" so I check the forum almost everyday to se if theres any updates and to learn more about the camera.

I don't feel like red "cheated" me just beacuse its not out yet. Quiet the opposite Im very happy with the things they working on to pull off.

Any mattebox for the scarlet yet that i have missed?

Agreed!

Any Idea which lenses would be compatible with the T2i and the (Scarlet) Red cameras within $1000 to $1500 range.
good to have ones such as wide lens,...

Please let me know about the compatible lenses with 7d & Scarlet too

7D and T2i share the same sensor, so the lenses are the same. I would stick with EF mount lenses from Canon, Zeiss, or Sigma. (Full Frame Lenses will be good for future cameras). Others can chime in if I am missing something.

Good luck shooting!

Thanks Alan!

No problem. Also, are you spending $1000-1500 overall or per lens? Secondly, remember when making your lens choices that both the 7D and T2i/550D have a Canon APS-C sized sensor that will give you a 1.6x Crop/Magnification factor, so going wide will be slightly more difficult.
e.g.
An EF lens such as the 16-35mm f/2.8L would have a FOV equal to ~26-56mm on the 7D & T2i/550D.
Just keep that in mind when you are shopping for lenses.
Lastly, don't be afraid to rent lenses to try them out and determine which you like that way you don't have to buy something and be disappointed with it. :)

For my T2i I bought a 17-70 Sigma (I believe its aps-c only, but thats ok for 2/3 scarlet) as well as a canon 50mm 1.8, and maybe a basic zoom. While these will work on a scarlet with canon mount, though, I don't trust the canon mount to release anywhere NEAR the launch date of the 2/3 interchangable.... and MUCH after the 2/3 fixed... which is distant too... so I plan to buy a fixed. That said, I am keeping the off chance I get a scarlet or epic someday and go with a canon mount.

that was not clear at all! sorry.

The T2i was tempting to me too. But $800 is a decent used matte box for Scarlet or cleaning collimation and mount conversion for one of my 16mm zooms. Opted to wait because I am more interested in a truly capable field package for Scarlet, with enough batteries and media to cover at least 6 hours of continuous shooting.

Bless him, I doubt Jim's absence will hold things up much. Jarred and team are certainly capable of running just fine on their own.

Tomorrow is Ides of May. Can we at least get an update on the update?
