  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet update in mid-May

It makes a huge amount of sense for me at 2D too! :) Now 1D, I'm not so sure. Hehe.

(But yes, I agree! The fact for under $10k you *could* be shooting a 3D image with new fixed kits. that is pretty impressive.

Sorry if this answered somewhere else but does scarlet fixed have a way to sync the sensors for 3d? And can the lenses be zoomed/focused togrther as well?

I believe that ALL Scarlets and Epics are equipped with true Genlock, excellent for 3-D sychronizing shutters. The Redmote is supposed to control upto 4 camers at once. I'm also thinking of 2 fixed Scarlets with beamsplitter for an excellent 3-D rig.

Jim, please please please give us a scarlet update soon. I've got 5 grand burning a hole in my pocket. I just don't want to settle for 1080P that isn't really even 1080P. Please understand where many of us are coming from is that we've been waiting for this camera for several YEARS. I remember when I heard the first scarlet schedule I thought "Summer of 2009!! - That's forever away!!" Many of us haven't 'gone anywhere', haven't bought any other cameras, and are anxiously awaiting the good news. So bring it on man!

Scarlet at end of June would be nice. Not even remotely likely though.

Now, what I really want to hear is more about the HDR video and stills modes, the ACTUAL stills capabilities of the Scarlet line, and maybe a firmer realease date.

A scarlet at the end of 2010 would be nice. Not counting on it though.

If I am not mistaken, Jarred did the last Scarlet announcements as well. (Nov. 30th) Although Jim was around at the time to oversee everything.

Let's wait and see, mid-May is nearly here.

I sure hope the mid-may scarlet announcment still shows. Ive been looking forward to it for a month.

I believe that the mid may update will still happen. I think that Jim wouldnt want to let us down as he knows that we are all waiting for this info as we all believe on what his amazing team produces.

And also I believe he believes on the team and things will still be going on and going strong.

I will also like to request Red to let us informed on the current scarlet situation. With honestly, a realistic date when they could release it to the market and with which specs

To be honest I don't know for sure if the announcment is gonna happen this month. Some relevant info hadn't been given to Jim, as of the time of the planned Mid month word. Seeing that he is now taking, a much desrved month off, I belive that info either is still coming or may have been given an unexpected exstension. Either way, it seems that we'll know by the end of next week; which I'm looking forward to.

I know Jarred is FULLY capable of dishing the dirt, but it's not the same as seeing Jannard post it; hopefully all is well, and its just a precautionary leave.

Regardless I think we'll know A LOT more about Scarlet next month.

Just re-read the specs for Scarlet from the main Red page. So, so excited!

The fixed could well be my ideal camera for Documentary camera work - and at a price that will allow some small budget for all the necessary extras like camera support, lighting and Hard drive arrays.

For me it all just hinges on that one spec they have held back all this time - the actual focal length range of the fixed lens. I really hope it starts at at least 8mm or wider. with 8x zoom that would give a nice FF35mm FOV equivalent of somewhere around 30-252mm at f8/11 split for DOF equivalent or for those used to APS-C sized sensors like on Canon's or similar to the S35 Cine standard 20-157mm at f5.6 for DOF equivalent (allowing some room for the aspect ratio difference fudge factor). This will just about give enough width at the wide end to get a full shot of someone standing at the far side of the average smaller household room without chopping off their toes (from about 9 ft away) and then zoom in for a nice tight Closeup from the same distance. Very handy, and ideal for Documentary work. If it started at 6 or 7 mm then it would be fine, possibly even great too, 7mm would probably be ideal. You could do almost anything with a lens in that range and just add a 2x extender when needed. The slow down of adding the extender wouldn't be so much of a problem as you need to set up a tripod when using those longer focal lengths anyway due to camera shake.

So, I hope Jim recovers well and enjoys his much deserved month off, and I hope at the very least that Jarred can spill the beans on the fixed focal lengths and give us an idea of the precise FF35 and S35 lens equivalents that take into account the various aspect ratio options. And of course that it covers the range I would see as ideal...
