  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet to outside camera comparison

I've been ready to buy Scarlet(s) for three years. The 3k for 3k idea, even with the original three-year-old sensor and specs would still blow everything else away. Hi resolution, hi framerates, great compression, RAW, small physical size. I've been dying for it all this time. 3k for 6k, whatever, I just want it. In the meantime, I have four GH2s with some great old Canon lenses, and the Voigtlander F.95 which is crazy fast and crazy shallow dof on the micro 4/3 sensor. Still, the compression kills me. I follow the hack progress, mostly hoping for a fix for the 24p hdmi cadence cripple, so I can spend more money to add Ninjas for ProRes recording. That will be really sweet. And nowhere near a Scarlet. I try not to get frustrated.

+1. Incredible little camera for the price, worthless codec...

I have one GH2 and one GH1 (overall the stock GH2 is much better then GH1!) and thanks to the hack, the codec gets better... just a "little bit" but in terms of AVCHD... a lot. Let's hope the hack will fix the HDMI one day... after all, as Jance said.. Its nowhere near the Scarlet. :-)

(btw. the 4/3 Voigtlander F.95 is one of the coolest lenses I've ever seen!)

Ikonoskop

Ikonoskop

I've looked pretty hard at the Ikonoskop for a couple of years now too. Seems very cool, but just too late and too expensive for 1080p 30.

I see several industrial cameras out there with firewire, ethernet, usb, etc., that seem close to what I want, short of a Scarlet. I've contacted some of them with no encouraging response. I feel like someone could fill a hole in the market with a simple camera head, interchangeable lens mount, sensor, and clean hdmi out. Just bare bones camera, assuming full manual control, and add a Ninja and SmallHD and you'd have something. Camera head $1000, Ninja $1000, SmallHD $1000. Am I crazy or would that sell?

I'd buy something in a similar configuration.

Go over to the alternative imaging forums over at www.dvinfo.net and search the thread history for these machine vision camera projects, also aperture camera forum, and Sumix threads. Si started here, and it prompted Jim into action.

The latest h264 is over 100mbs. I contacted him and asked him about 10 bit, shd, raw, 4:2:2 etc, not best response. Gh3 and other pro or similar, are said to be out soon, or next year.

But still... what Panasonic can do? If we are talking about GH3 .. it's 999$ camera (!).. They will include AVCHD2.0 => 1920x1080p 28mbit/s at 24/25/50/60p and that's basicaly it in terms of codec and recording formats... they have nice, large micro4/3 sensor but they will probably screw the HDMI up again.. so you can't get clean 1080p24 signal out..

I remember some talk about hdmi, but do not know if it was about a solutions. I agree that it is very poor to only do fullhd p50 at 28mbs, when 36mbs is a preferable minimum. However, the gh2 is hacked to do over 100mbs h264, which is more like today's technology, competitive technology. If the hackers put the time in they could probably record shd/4k, even 12 bit raw. But I think Panasonic knows they are nice and safe with these hackers, not many people are going to waste time setting up a professional rig to record fullhd in place of a more expensive ready made camera.

I forgot to mention, they plan two other cameras this year I think, one at least, an up market pro version. There is also some 3d Lumix coming next year, but I don't know if it is significant. The truth is that we don't want upmarket af100 like, but down market Sony vg-20 and Nex 5n like. How does the new Nex compare to the gh2?

I think what people over look (perhaps surprisingly) is the image rather than the specs.... It really does look alot like S16 film. Very interesting. Overcrank is less important than the final look, for me at least.

Though I'd agree that there "quite simply isn't one", IMHO, that's no reason not to get a camera in the meantime.

Some camera is better than no camera. Spielberg and all of the other greats didn't start with one of the most technologically advanced cameras of their time to practice before the time they got some of the best tools.

I love the images as well. They are beautiful. It looks like super 16 to me to.
Agreed, the look of that camera is quite stunning, very S16mmish but the data transfer (USB 2.0??) and DNG format just don't work...
Cinema-DNG is working for those that have the Ikonoskop. The quirks are with said programs, not the camera, and have been pretty much ironed out. USB 2.0 is ridiculously slow but faster connections will be soon on the way. And when you think about the final result/image, it's not much different from the past "waiting feeling," of sending one's film stock out and getting it back. I think the footage is worth the wait, at least in terms of making motion pictures and documentaries. Perhaps wouldn't work as a P2 format camera, hand the client over the footage immediately sort of deal.

How does the new Nex compare to the gh2?
The codec and recording format (AVCHD2.0) of the new NEX is much better then unhacked GH2! (I'm not 100% sure about the sensor, light sensitivity etc.) But you just apply the 100mbit/s GOP3 hack and you can't compare the GH2 to another camera in this price range... the hack is so powerful! (btw. GH2 is pretty awesome in low light situations at high ISOs).. Tomorrow, I'm taking my old GH1 with 100mbit/s hack to shoot an award ceremony.. hope it turns out well!

Can you let us know how it turns out? I understand that the gh1s h264 hacked mode is not as good as the gh2, and I guess you are using the jpeg 100mbs mode anyway.
