I purchased my scarlet before the end of last year to get "the deal", now less than a year later the real deal hits the streets.. 50% off Epic X and big discounts on Scarlet and media also. Sony's new camera offerings, I believe, pressured Red into heavily discounting their products to compete (ironic since Red did the same thing to Sony with the Red One). Of course many of us would have waited/rented for an extra few months given the current landscape and it is what it is, but, it still stings a little. Personally I would have saved the extra dough and moved into an epic x or the new Sony F55. Is there any chance Red will have compassion for it's long time fans and users and help us mitigate the loss by offering a trade up deal into an Epic X? I know I'm dreaming here but I really wish I had waited, thinking about the Epic I could have had is painful.

Well imagine you spent on the Epic at 38K or any other 2012 price point and then you'd be even more unhappy - think of a bullet dodged rather than something to be dwelt upon. You only need to read the various other Epic threads to see how some Epic owners feel.

Jim and RED's path is clear at the moment I think - as current Epic or Scarlet owners, we paved the way for the price cut and the battlefield has changed a lot in the last year.

I think many current Scarlet owners would love to get a trade-up option. I don't think even merely getting the Dragon sensor would quench that need to have the best (now that it's within reach).

Mind you, that 'need' might disappear should Red release news about the replacement of the current Epic with an Epic 2.0 or Ultimate or whatever it becomes (and the higher price for it). Many would stride to be the James Bond of their peers having the latest and greatest and being in that prestige club of the Elite. Plus it would be cool to have.

So back to Scarlet. I would love an Trade-Up option (and like Red have listened in the past, hope they will consider it) even if there is a Dragon option. We don't deserve one but I'm sure there might be a fair value and something worthy to benefit Red and us Scarleteers. This would be the ONLY company that might offer such a kind generous option.

I feel bad for the epic owners who spend 38K no doubt, it's not a contest, I'm just saying it would be nice if there was an upgrade path for people who have owned their cameras for less than a year. In the same regard it would be nice if the epic owners who paid full price got a special upgrade to dragon offer to help mitigate their losses as well. Now we all have to compete with others who paid far less for their gear, so they will pay back the investment in tools much faster and turn a profit quicker, or were able to build a much better kit for the same money.

I'm just hoping that the Dragon upgrade includes 4K HDMI output...

(and possibly a thunderbolt port...)

The price for the Scarlet from last year is not that much more than what the price is now. We all want Epics, but I don't feel red owes us anything. In a year or two the Epic might be even more affordable. Personally, I want to keep my Scarlet as a second camera, so the only upgrade deal I would go for would be a credit given to Scarlet owners who buy Epics.

At this point the upgrade path is you sell your scarlet brain, and put the money towards a 19k epicx brain.

I mean its rather cheap comparatively, and the scarlet still retained most of its value.

True, hopefully I'll get a decent sale from my Scarlet and will be able to bump up. I'm waiting to see what the price point is for the F55 at this point.. I really like the modularity of the Epic/Scarlet and have lots of little pieces that help in various support applications but a global shutter would be a very big plus.. reviews, pros and cons will pop up soon I'm sure.

Red could make a trade-up to Epic for Scarlet owners possible and then offload those traded in Scarlets as a BT versions with 90 days warranty etc... The same what they have done now, offering the BT Red One MX deal (for €4k)... If this ever happens, one would just hope they do that before Scarlets reach end of life ;-)... RRP (Red Recycling Program :-))

I agree that, technically, it's retained "most" of it's value (meaning over 50%), but it's definitely dropping alarmingly fast. Well, alarmingly for those of us who look at resale value, which is apparently very few (and those of us that do have to be quiet about it, usually).
