  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet to EPIC Upgrade

Has anyone upgraded from Scarlet to EPIC then to EPIC DRAGON but not at the same time?

For myself, the wheels are rolling for a possible late September upgrade to EPIC.

Anyone else want to debate the Scarlet Dragon over EPIC please jump in.

Yes, each year one step. Worked out nicely, and pretty much when the Scarlet went out of warranty, the Epic had one more year. The upgrade from Epic to Dragon added right in time 90 days (to the new parts).

I'm grateful for that option. I'm just back from shooting this (early) morning in Pasadena (L.A.) with the Dragon and my little Steadicam-Pilot. Empty alleys and great light, perfect for Dragon. :o)

Ive went Scarlet to Epic, which was great and then to Dragon. My Dragon should be with me early this coming week. Its all worked out well for me, i had the Scarlet only for a month or so before the upgrade path became available and i jumped on it, and haven't looked back.
 
The debate is still on in my little head as far as Scarlet Dragon or EPIC.

Since there is no upgrade path from SXD to EPIC DRAGON, you would think my little brain would just say GO EPIC :)
 
I'm finally less than a month away from being able to do it. The way I see it, I never had an issue with the dynamic range of my scarlet. I just wanted more fps and lower compression. Epic gives me that and is very rentable. Unless it's for personal use I'll not invest in the scarlet version of anything again.

Great camera but rental wise it's positioned as too expensive for low budget and if you can afford it you can no doubt afford an epic. After the novelty wears off it will be the same for scarlet dragon too.
 
Go Epic and don't turn back. You get higher frame rates and lower compression. Get the mag mini's as well and you get two compression steps of improvement.
Scarlet Dragon is awesome if you just shoot 25fps, but it still has a high compression even on regular real time. Remember, the Epic MX has been one of the best cameras on the market and still is, it's not obsolete just because dragon is out. Get the Epic, do some work and then finance the Dragon upgrade.
 
i upgraded scarlet to EPIC X last year. Although it seems same sensor i think the difference is big especially high frames. So i am very happy about that decision.
Now i upgraded to epic DRAGON and i am sending my epic for upgrade. The main reason for epic to dragon upgrade is color and highlight rollof. but the new color science of dragon is big difference.
