  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet the forgotten?

why have I got the impression that people have this feeling that "scarlet" would be something less than Red One?
there is going to be several scarlet models, fron 2/3" 3K up to 6k, and up to 100mb/s, so it should be impossible to say "Scarlet is" either more or less than Red one.
I don't understand.

I'm thinking sort of the same thing, at least with the S35 and FF35, it should be equal to a red one. 2/3 is more of a applying the same logic of the other reds to produce a top quality camera to take over the camcorder and now market. It will be interesting to see what type of a hurdle the RAW format will be for some producing TV show and will need to constantly convert footage. If red adapted say prores, they'd clean up in the pro/semi pro camera market and double or triple sales. My guess TV production houses will stick to XDcam or DVChdpro for this reason.

99% of the time when someone says "Scarlet" they really mean "Scarlet 2/3 Fixed". Most of the folks who're waiting for other versions of Scarlet are aware of the similarities with EPIC. Given that, it's more or less a given from the specs and fixed lens that it will, in fact, be a less capable camera than RED One.

Something else to consider is that Fixed Scarlet is on an *entirely* different production timeline than EPIC or the other Scarlets. Whereas the EPICs and Modular Scarlets are being manufactured effectively in-house (Not exactly, but close enough for analogy) the Fixed Scarlet is being manufactured in China like a consumer product. It *was* going to be built by Foxconn, but interpreting Jim's comments leads me to believe that they're switching manufacturing partners.

So it's quite possible that "Scarlet" will show up by year end. Will it be the "Scarlet" that everyone is talking about? (Fixed 2/3) Probably not.

I was following your post and nodding all along until this last comment. I agree that right now most people who have been following the discussion realize that the first Scarlet, and IMO the only one remotely possible this year, is the 2/3" Fixed. Do you think a different Scarlet is more likely to come first? Just curious as to what I am misunderstanding.

It's not a consumer product. Has Red ever been at CES?

The same could have been said about DSLR's only a few years ago. I don't see any reason that Scarlet 2/3" wouldn't be considered a consumer product.

Hopefully EPIC would have already been released by CES, and I think it would be a perfect place to launch the 2/3" Fixed.

I have to admit a bit of amusement at the "made up" dates for Scarlet to ship. Based on what (little) we know now, the farther out the predictions, the less they can be based on fact - but more likely, frustration.

We do know that there is at least one prototype Scarlet shooting now. (and I am going to guess there's a few more.) We know that Epic is very active and much of the software/firmware development is behind us and that bodes well for Scarlet. We know that Scarlet is expected (per Jim's earlier posts - always subject to change) about 60 days after Epic. And we have been given a hint by Jim that it is possible that Scarlet could be here before year end.

I am hopeful, although not necessarily confident, that Scarlet (2/3) will come before year end because of what I believe are the other benchmarks. Obviously, if Epic doesn't make it out by October, the hope for a 2010 Scarlet fades substantially.

Saw that - but "not been determined" doesn't necessarily
mean "We, inside of RED, don't have any idea." They obviously know
more than they are saying but less than enough to announce a release.
And so, we wait.

Terry, I agree with your comments about people's projections being based
on frustrations ... however, it sounds like from that IBC post they are
waiting for feedback from Steven Soderbergh before making any
significant stage movements. (Obviously, it's my interpretation -- not
a fact.)

But if that's the case, he could be shooting for 60-90 days, then longer
in post ... and then Red might need time to adjust things based on what
he and other testers have suggested.

So based on this comment, seems like AT LEAST 90 days before the
camera is released to Stage 2 ... and maybe 6 months or more.

I'm not being pessimistic ... Jim's recent posts feel (again, my
interpretation) that the camera is not that far away.

But still, given the post quoted -- I wouldn't wager on Stage 2 starting
before the end of the year.

I'm not even on Stage 2 or 3 ... and I still hope I'm wrong.

But like many posters have noted -- nobody wants these cameras out
sooner than Red. So no question they are doing their very best.

With Red and Soderbergh, they probably have someone on set and feedback is daily, as are any bug fixes they run into. The Tattoo program shrank considerably, I think its down to something like 20 cameras total.
There are others, like Off Hollywood, engaged in multiple productions who seem to know more and may themselves be shooting with prototypes, but aren't talking except in vague hints.
They won't be waiting quietly for Soderbergh's full production cycle to move forward. They could already have hardware in early stages of production too.
Look at the way they are responding and releasing updates to Redcine-X, more than 200 builds in less than 9 months and bug fix responses to user feedback in days. This is what is going on with Epic and Scarlet too.

I think it would not be wise to think any of the general public get a hold of red before the new year. With scarlet, I'm thinking around March is the earliest for any 2/3 and summer or later for s35. I think the Sod film is to battle test it and see what or if problems arise. Their using something like 6 of them. Good theory.

The biggest sign I'm looking for is jim to say they have found a place to manufacture scarlet.

Boy I'm looking forward to them!

You could also interpret it as "the camera is done and final ok will come as it's proven daily on a big feature film shoot". Which means we could see EPICs really soon.

The R1 was by no means done when it was used on Che.

I think when they hit the production line, that's when it is done. And as you know from R1, it does not REALLY mean it is done. The guys have worked hard over the years making a lot better.

The Epic prototypes are built from production line parts. These are far closer to finished cameras than Boris and Natasha were when Che was shot. Those were lab prototypes that only had an on off switch and a record button.
Red is a very different company now than it was then. They have several years of manufacturing, sales, and support logistics experience under their belt this time around. Things will happen much faster than they did with R1.

Wouldn't that be tridem? :biggrinjester:

All I know is I want it to be yesterday! I'm looking at stop-gap systems at the moment and, MAN!, are they overpriced and under featured by comparison. It just hurts to buy what else is on offer when you know Scarlet is coming. I can't even feel good about buying a DSLR because my Scarlet will be that too!

Any thoughts on if all three Scarlet models will be released in tandem?

Yes! I would buy all three!

I agree to this, and think once things get going, they will move through orders quickly. I think they are very close. Which is too bad for me it was not a bit sooner. Some stuff I'm about to film will be coolest of my life, it deserves to at least in red. But nice to know one day it will all be RED.

Trust me I know. I just bough another DSLR yesterday. Although at $1800 it's nothing compared to what I use spend on camera. I even think the scarlet are priced great, hence while I'll buy a fixed, 2/3's and when the S35 comes out, I'll get one of those too.
