  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet Test Clip, Scene Lit by 1 Light @400ISO

Hi Joe, great work all round. Loved that. Great images, but accompanied by strong cinematic storytelling.
Soundscape was terrific too. Where's that from if you don't mind me asking?

Really look forward to seeing your work over the coming years with your Scarlet.

I have a contax set. Were the CU's on yourself the Contax 50?

Jim, loved your RED one test too!

Best

Lliam
Hey Liam - thanks! And spot on - the face CU were indeed the Contax 50mm! Oh that audio is from Dragon Tattoo soundtrack - loved Reznor and Ross's work on that. Cool ambient stuff. Basically fit the mood of the test

Holy sweet sunlight, I wasn't prepared for the final shot. Good job.

Well there is noise, but i do say it is pretty filmic grain. I shot @ 400ISO and then brought the blacks down in RedCine (RedLogFilm gamma) which got rid of a lot of noise (i wanted it to be very dark)
I also ran it through Neat Video denoiser in Premiere. I find that plugin just fantastic, used the demo for like 30minutes and went and purchased it. I think it is better than the NUKE denoiser - at least as far as getting very natural looking results super quickly. Then re-grained it slightly.
Plus, the vimeo compression and bringing it down to 1080p from the 4K timeline obviously hides a lot of the noise that would be there

If i have time i'll try to post a before and after image

Thanks Joe for the reply. I'm guessing you would recommend RedLogFilm on clips for the Gamma Space? I saw someone else post about Neat Video denoiser...seems like I will have to download that. Just curious, what was the reason to denoise then re-noise the footage? Thanks for the info!

Only reason I did it was because I watched the clip on my TV and thought it looked too 'smooth' ??

I'm a sucker for film grain - I think a lot of people ever since the low-light slr revolution look for noise free picture, but I love the texture that film has, and my personal taste is to try to emulate a little bit of that when called for. Different strokes....

Plus, I wanted to see how going from RCX>PREMIERE>NUKE worked with the exrs so adding grain that way gave me a reason to try it
