  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet SSD and CF

I wonder if they could release a bare bones SDD module without monitor board+port, user buttons and a record button (not sure about any one else, but I only need one record button!).

If they could drop a bare bones module for, say, $500 and in exchange for the CF module... then I would be looking at 2x128gb SSDs.

$2500 is just too much for me to spend on media accesories (+ $250 to read the SDD).

My bigger concern is CF cards being abandoned in a year or so.

The rear mount SSD module is exactly that,no frills, $1500. That one is still in the mix too.

Yea, it seems like a good option... hopefully we can trade in our side CF module for some discount.

2 x 64gb - $1800
1 x back SSD module - $1000 (with CF discount)
1 X SSD base - $250

Total - $3050

I'd be more than happy with that set up and price.

I believe the other issue with off the shelf cards is just as it can have spikes of much higher recording rates they also have very low recording rate spikes, they do not truly sustain an acceptable write speed thus they can not work with such intensive recording as Redcode Raw unless their lowest write speeds are well above the required amount which at this point little to none are (besides red's obviously).

I'm leaning that way too.

Jim, I wouldn't worry too much about this. I think we can all be assured that Red will ship Scarlet with a system price point that makes sense for the prosumer market. So CFs will be on-board, and Red has already said that. You can also be confident, that technology will move on, and that at some point we will no longer be using CF cards. That is a surety. New memory tech is always happening. The good news is that if you go the CF route one of two things will happen: You will use your camera for a year to a year and a half on many jobs, easily recouping your investment in CF cards plus a healthy profit which can in part be allocated to the next memory system upgrade (SSD). or You don't use your Scarlet nearly as much as you thought you would, so your lightly used CF cards will meet your needs for many years before they wear out and need replacement.

If Red stops supplying CF cards in a year or so (unlikely), you still get a killer camera today, and can upgrade to SSD or something else later to extract even more performance out of your cam.

I just don't see any downside to what Red is doing here. Everybody doesn't actually need what SSDs bring to the table...at least not right off the bat. And the SSD option is always available when it is needed, or can be rented most likely.

Paul, I appreciate your optimism, however there are alot of Scarlet customers that built their planned system around 64gb CFs, only to see RED pull the idea... Hinting at a shift away from CF. The announcement of the SSDs seems to indicate just how fast they want to move away from CF (the fact that it will replace CF on the R1 is a big clue).

I, like you, don't think RED would pull the CF line while people are still using that media... but it IS a possibility and so far no RED staff have been on here to say otherwise. As I have not dealt with RED yet as a customer, I cannot go into this with the same optimism as you.

I would rather hear... from the horses mouth.... that SSD is the only format that will get the Scarlet 2/3" feature set working, so that I can start planning. For my line of work, 120fps is important... It is very important for me to know if it is possible with CF and at which RC.

CF is not going away for Scarlet and is still a great option.

We will continue to work on more CF options for Scarlet/Epic/R1.

Thanks Deanan, good to hear.

Do you have any info on max RC for popular fps at 3K... 24/48/60/120 fps?

I know things might change as Scarlet gets closer, but it would be interesting to hear so we can start planning.

The SD Association has announced an extension to the format that will allow SDHC and SDXC cards with transfer rates of up to 300 MB/s - three times faster than the theoretical maximum of the UHS-I cards that are starting to appear and sixteen times quicker than conventional cards. The as yet unnamed standard will use a second row of connection pins located behind the existing ones to allow the greater transfer rates. The association says the cards will be defined by the SD 4.0 specification expected in early 2011 and will be backwards-compatible with existing SD, SDHC and SDXC devices, albeit without the speed benefits.

For all the budget minded people: there's always the option to get cf cards or even a second-hand Red Drive for your personal Scarlet(the Red Drive will allow you to record hours and hours of 25/30/24fps material), and then rent/borrow the SSD module and drive for the shoots you need 120fps and highest quality. That's the beauty of the modularity.

Now that MIGHT be the best suggestion yet. This could work well for me.

Questions:

1. Will Scarlet Fixed have a Lemo output that will connect to a Red Drive?
2. Guesstimate on price of used Red Drives once Red One owners start upgrading to SSD's? Or are these going to remain available only at retail or higher?
3. Are the internal drives user replaceable?
