Hello

Was just wondering.. if i were to sell my RED and get a S35 Scarlet,
would i be gaining or losing quality?

From the specs, I think that all you would lose is a bit of flexibility in the frame rate/frame size settings... But apart from that, I think both the camera and the system as a whole are going to be better than the R1.

as it stands now.. scarlet s35 specs are better.

once we can get a monstro upgrade in redone
(only real thing that will allow redone to not become obsolete)

then red one will be better (which should be the case)

Scarlet S35 currently has 5K, greater dynamic range than R1, 72fps bursts, Redcode 80, and 1080p, as well as custom frame sizes, except for anamorphic support, is lighter weight, and will benefit from the modular aspect of the brain system.

I think it beats the RED ONE in every single respect. Plus, you can later upgrade the brain to a Monstro brain for the added dynamic range and sell the S35 Scarlet. IMO that's better than upgrading the sensor on the R1. Plus, I'm betting that the cost of getting an S35 Scarlet + all modules to make it match the R1 will be cheaper than $17,500.

Of course, all this is based on the info provided so far. Anything can change at any moment.

Hi,

Many PL mounted lenses won't cover the 30 x 15 sensor size, I would assume there will be a windowed mode, that will be less than 5k, don't assume that Scarlet will always outperform Red One.

I don't own a Scarlet, so this is an educated guess.

We spend a lot of time here discussing and comparing products that don't exist yet... it's interesting as an abstract discussion, but surely practical issues like "do I need to sell my RED and get a Scarlet?" are not particularly practical at this particular moment.

A glaring difference (to me) is that the Scarlet can only overcrank in 2K mode; for a 1080p finish that's a huge disadvantage. They do list a "burst" feature, but we have no idea how long that burst will be and it certainly won't be long enough for a decent length slow motion take (remember that you're shooting a lot more frames in slow-mo than you normally do). If you don't ever overcrank, the s35 Scarlet is probably all you'll ever need and more. But I do think it's a point that shouldn't be glossed over.

Hi Stephen...

My understanding (I could be wrong though) is that the overall sensor size includes the lookaround area (correcting an oversight in the Red One's sensor design), and that the actual active 5k sensor area will be S35 spec. It would be madness if this were not the case!

No-one does - that's kinda the problem! ;-)

Cheers,
Dom.

Hi Dom,

I believe there will be a larger than S35 option, that is 5k, S35 will be a windowed option, hopefully R35 as well, or those Zeiss Standards will start collecting dust.

I admitted to not owning a Scarlet as a member in another thread was implying that I had no idea what I was talking about, not being an owner. Users unbiased opinion clearly counts for nothing.

Best,

Stephen

Well, the only thing the RED One will have over Scarlet is frame rates, hence the higher price. The RED One is the most flexible of all the cameras as it is an inbetween camera from Scarlet to Epic. So, with that in mind, you can't compare them directly without considering all of the other choices being put on the table.

Do you want to do FF35? Get a Scarlet and aim for anamorphics or get ready to start cropping.

Do you want more resolution? A Scarlet gives more bang for your buck but you can always get the Epic-X upgrade for the RED One and technically have your cake and eat it too.

Do you own lenses and, if so, what kind? If you have full frame Nikon lenses, you should be fine for any RED camera, even up to Epic until it starts going to Medium Format lenses. If you have Nikon DX lenses, well, you're better off buying a S35 model for now unless you want to go ahead and add the expense of buying the full frame Nikon lenses for your collection. Canon lenses will be the same deal as they too have full frame and cropped lenses. If you own PL lenses, you should be in good shape granted that they're 35mm format as 16mm format will, of course, limit your resolution options. etc. etc.

Basically, there are a lot of things to consider. It's not just "Which one is better?".

Don't be surprised if S35 Scarlet offers windowed 3k+ overcranking when all is said and done. It's a simple firmware tweak. Logic dictates that this will happen. It may happen quietly once the dust settles.

Curious, does Red One have the option to window down to 2/3" sensor size now? Interested in the increased FOV/Crop Factor with windowing to the smaller sensor size to help fill the frame when shooting wildlife. As you mentioned, it will be interesting if Scarlet S35 will be able to do this also.

almost alliteration . Grammar aint to shabby in these parts

And had he repeated that a couple more times it would have been the onomatopeyic kind at that. ;-)

I don't believe the ONE can do this, but anyway, if you weren't doing it to gain a higher frame rates, but instead only to narrow the FOV, then you'd actually end up with the exact same result just scaling/reframing in post. Maybe the only other benefit would be smaller file sizes, but I doesn't seem like that's what you were after.
Peace,

Yes, it's the 2K mode most people use for high speed stuff, though of course it's also an option if you only have access to Super16 lenses or want to save on storage space etc.

You also have an intermediate 3K mode, though you generally need Super35 glass in order to avoid vignetting (and no one makes glass for that in between size anyway).

Scarlet Anamorphic

Scarlet Anamorphic

Do you want to do FF35? Get a Scarlet and aim for anamorphics or get ready to start cropping.

The Scarlet specs don't mention anamorphics, but with FF35 it would make total sense to have that ability.

Will there be an option for shooting full-frame anamorphic on the FF35 sensor with Scarlet? (definitely a reason to go with FF35 over S35 to me! http://reduser.net/forum/images/smilies/smiley.gif)
