Owkay, just to break down, and get an overview in this breaktrough announcement of RED:

Scarlet S35:
Pro
- 5K
- More Upgradeable
- Smaller Form, lighter
- S35 mm new sensor, Mysterium X.
- Chances to use normal Cinema lenses and photo lenses from Canon & Nikon.
- Less compressed Redcode (maybe Red One will receive this, or only with an sensor upgrade?)
- ... ?

Contra
- only 30fps (will it allow more framerates at lower resolutions?)
- ... ?

RED ONE
Pro
- All in One package
- Trade in value for Epic.
- Faster framerates
- ... ?

Contra
- 4k (hah, this is a contra already, while everyone is still in an HD-world, or not even there)
- Less upgradeable?
- More compressed codec? (see above)

My ultimate point is: is the new Scarlet S35 better then the RED One, and what would be the advantages of Red One?
I don't have the budget for a Red One, not by a long shot, but just interested in knowing for the future...

Again: RED, congratulations with your announcement! Your really blew everyone socks away.

Thanks,

If you think you'll get a complete working scarlet package with S35 sensor that does everything the RED One does, but for much cheaper, I think you're going to be disappointed.

what makes you say that? the scarlet fact sheet i'm looking at makes me think that it will be cheaper....not only that, but that Redone is heading into obsolescence within a year from a portability/price/resolution pov....which is a part of the technology cycle

I agree with evolve. The RED One is obsolete. The Scarlet is better.

Guys, remember the sticker shock we all had when we thought "Oh! 17,500k body... $32,000 red store purchase?!? WTF?"

And then we all got over it, forked over our money, and have been shooting beautiful footage ever since.

I imagine that the Scarlett will be the same thing. $7k for the body, yes, but I'd imagine that you're looking at at least $10-15k in accessories (for something comparable to the RO) with the Redmote (so corney, but we'll all be saying it soon), EVF, recording.memory units, new battery packs, lens mounts... etc, etc.

Plus you'll be able to use most of your hardware with any new system you buy (including arri FF/MB, tripod, and GLASS, which should be your main investment anyway).

ADDITIONALLY:

Your main "asset" as it were, should never have been your equipment. It should be your talent.

One thing I did notice on the spec sheets is that Scarlet will not do High speed. So
Red One to Epic or uprgrade Red One is the only way to shoot high speed if you want that.

And I also think that RED did make an admirable effort of specing out these new offerings with features that were NOT aimed squarely at the RO (RED ONE) market.

You may feel a little let down. The RED, RED Company, or JJ are not the second coming of Jesus, so... they might... just... disappoint you sometimes. In small ways, of course :)

I can't see why the cameras wouldn't operate the same as RED ONE. If you want high speed you shoot at 4k or 3k @ 120fps... It's just saying that the Epic can achieve 100FPS @ 5K, which is why it'll probably appeal to another user group.

I'm with Kinobairn and Ryan. Once you get all the modules on a s35 Scarlet I don't think it will be a whole lot cheaper than a R1. In addition to all the normal accessories you need to shoot, the $7k brain looks like it will need a power module, sound module and maybe a couple more to have all the capabilities of the R1 body.

However, I don't think this is even a SLIGHT let down. I think it's freaking sweet. I was never interested in an "out-of-the-box", fixed glass, $3k scarlet, but I'm sure as hell going to buy the s35 version of it now!!!

Red One used to have a low frame rate, right? And then it got better. Same thing with Scarlet, right?

Even the table that lists all the cameras puts Red One at 30fps.

And when you say.... accessories... is that the standard cinema stuff or Red accessories?

Most of my accessories should be useable on Scarlet or Epic, right? But what about the red production pack... cheese plate, shoulder mount, etc?

But my Red batteries aren't useable if I upgrade to the Epic. What about that?

hmmm...

This kills the R1 in every way.. lets not try to deny it. I think the fps they listed were max frames for REDCODE 42. I'm guessing a lower codec will give more fps for the Scarlet.

I'll bet the RED Brick batts are going to be compatible with Ep/Sc (through a power port like on RO), it's just that the new battery module will be smaller, more central, better designed, etc.

You don't think that Scarlet users and its forum won't be as vocal as Red One and ask for high speed? They know they can get it because it a firmware upgrade. It's possible, right? And Red purposefully disabling a feature doesn't seem like Red to me.

Just not sure about all this...

But don't get me wrong...

... I'm still a fanboy!!!

There... I said it... I'm a fanboy. lol. :)

Should have put this in my last post, sorry...

there is no mention of whether the scarlet brains will be able to shoot high framerates at lower resolutions. I'm assuming that they will be able to do just that. Who knows though, I could be wrong.

"Accessories" that will be compatible are most RED, all FF, MB, tripods, and glass...

And, of course... talent/<mad>stillz...

Oh, I know it's not only the body. And although RED One has more things centralized, it's the same with the RED One, you need more then only the body.

I'm not complaining. And I agree, it's about the talent. I'm just asking for information.

Let me be clear: I don't feel let down. I think that even if I would be a RED One owner, I wouldn't feel let down. I think RED is doing some great things, they have outdone themselves with the RED One, and it looks like they are doing even greater things with Scarlet and Epic.
I just want to make sure if I'm forgetting something. It looks like the Scarlet S35 will be cheaper (even with all the modules) then a Red One, and it will be better, then the Red One. I'm not complaining about that, you guys with the Red One still have a great 4K camera, and probably already earned it back a LOT. And these new camera's are still far away.
Red promised a 17.5k camera, shooting 2k onboard and 4k via RAW. They offered sooo much more, and a price point that is still revolutionary.
I started this thread to make sure if I'm reading right, if I'm comparing the Scarlet specs with the RED One specs.

I was actually going to get the fixed lens version for $3k. Now it seems as if that version may end up costing $6K after all the extras unless red makes a specific package deal. I don't need to ever change the lens. If it zooms and shoots 3K I was going to be all over it. Now I may go to the $2.5k brain but after lens and every thing else it is back up to around 6K. So they will destroy the ex1,ex3, $6-9k camera market, but for the $2-4K market. I maybe getting a darn D90. :( Everything is at least 8 months away so new SLR cameras can come out by then. I agree Red is for professionals and their products are very professional, but this doesn't seem like the camera that a college would buy 10 of for a film class anymore. Before $40K for 10 Scarlet cameras would have been amazing. Hopefully the fixed lens price doesn't go over $5k for a package.
