  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet S16, a request.

LOL

You guys are funny too. Go ahead, believe you got a swiss army knife.

I miss the idea of the smaller fixed lens Scarlet but the technology to make it live up to what we now expect image quality wise may be a bit down the road. I would love a S16mm 3lb camera that could shoot 5k resolution so it would match perfectly with Epic. Maybe in a couple years??

We are just feeling the results of a fundamental sea-change with the Scarlet -- for those wanting an entry-level pro S35 digital cinema camera, or a back-up for their Epic package, the new Scarlet makes a lot of sense -- it would intercut great with the more expensive cameras, use the same glass and accessories, etc. The pricing is very good, way below anything comparable on the market.

For those that thought of Scarlet as a completely different sort of camera line from Red, something like a better SI2K or Ikonoskop, or a digital 16mm Canon Scoopic/Bolex, or some other kick-ass little camera that is semi-pro, semi-consumer that would avoid all the pitfalls of shooting video on a Canon 7D or GH2, etc. -- in the $7000 price range -- then the disappearance of the 2/3" Scarlet is a disappointment and saying that you can just crop the picture of the S35 Scarlet is sort of missing the point -- you can crop an IMAX camera's picture to 16mm if you wanted to, that doesn't make it into a 16mm camera.

I don't the two groups being satisfied with the other group's desires regarding Scarlet. For those that wanted an affordable version of the Epic, the new Scarlet is better than the idea of a separate 2/3" system with separate lenses, etc. For those that wanted to get the only 2/3" 3K RAW camera on the market that was sort of a suped-up handicam with a fixed zoom, and priced just above a Canon 5D, then they are going to have to wait for someone else to create that product.

I'm in this crowd. Unfortunately, as far as i have heard, Red has patented the use of compressed RAW at movie frame rates, so the likelihood of anyone else making such camera is low. What a bummer.

I will certainly miss that fine zoom lens Red created... it was a technological marvel for sure. Red, if you decide to make the fixed lens Scarlet again, I'm still interested. I will say I am very pleased with the Scarlet-X as well and look forward to using one! As David mentions the fixed-Scarlet and the Scarlet-X serve two different audiences and it makes sense that Red has to make some hard choices so I understand.

I generally agree with him, how couldn't I? Size/form factor were my 1st reserves when the final RED ONE came out to the streets, much different than the original plan. Hope this won't happen this time when it will be possible to put our hands in the X form factor for real.

Isn't DSMC program up?

So, both X (EPIC/Scarlet) shouldn't be as much different as full frame (!) 5D Mark II... And 2/3" are regularly big TV cameras, therefore, to associate sensor size with camera size isn't necessarily mandatory. It could be, but quite probably in the end it wouldn't happen in that way we all dream. With the exception for the glass, for sure. That's why the crop solution looks like a run-n-gun workaround, at least to my eyes.
