Dunno if this is the right forum, but I had a thought (always dangerous!)

Like many, I plan to rent my Scarlet and other kit out from time to time when I'm not using it.

Like many, I own just the one camera.

This presents a problem, because any professional rental pretty much has to include some kind of backup plan if the camera goes titsup on the shoot. Also, at times people are going to want some piece of gear you don't have.

There are going to be a fair number of Scarlet owners in the NYC area in the same position as me, I'm betting. Anyone feel there's any mileage in us getting together and forming some kind of loose co-op setup, where we pool resources to an extent, act as each others backup, and share lists of gear, to make sourcing stuff easier? I dunno if this has been tried elsewhere, whether it works etc.

Just a thought...

Mike, that's an excellent idea. Nothing formal, just a list of friendly redusers willing to help each other out. Gives more options to our clients--so you need three cameras?--and a safety net for the worst case. If something happens, everyone in the group agrees to rent their Scarlet at 50% standard to the party who needs to give his client a replacement camera.

The plus side to membership would be, say, a 40% discount on rentals within the group--professional courtesy. We only need 4-5 other folks to make this work beautifully. Timur, where are you...

This also makes finding requested gear a bit easier--client wants an MB-20, you've got an MB-14; you check the google doc for all those who have one and reach out.

It all sounds very logical and easy but the problem is that if you do not have a full
time person dedicated to organizing and policing everything and coordinating the logistics your equipment will
end up in shreds.

I think if everyone has an equipment list, it would be great. I'd much rather sub rent from an owner-operator vs. a rental house for camera gear. Currently I'm looking to rent a TiCanon mount for this Thursday. Anyone have one available? PM me.

Here is my equipment list if you guys need anything: http://www.vigilantehd.com/red-scarlet-rentals-nyc/

Hey are you located in Long Island? I see you have a 516 number. I don't have mine just yet, But when it comes in maybe we can help each other out.

I was wanting to post something similar before Epic and Scarlet X shipped
I believe it would be great for Epic and Scarlet owners to utilize their cameras as a buddy B cam system
This way Epic owners would have backup B Scarlets and Scarlet owners can utilize high frame rate B cam Epics
I thought of posting a way for this to become realized but never had the time to run it by some wiser redusers first..
Hope something can be setup, it would be a great possible advantage through community
I have a Scarlet-X and live in Los Angeles California

There's another thread on this now:

Yeah, very good call! I will be in NYC in March. I will not list the stuff just now but basically I will be going with oconnor for FF and Mattebox, leica glass, pl and canon mounts, miller arrow 25 or 55, scout steadicam and some arri fresnels. No PL glass, too expensive for me right now.
Cheers.

Tony, the Millers are excellent. Steve Gibby gives them a very strong endorsement and as far as I know they aren't paying him :D

I would second that. If you're on a tight budget, look for used Arrow 50 - useful saving on new Arrow 55 (which is cheap already) if you get a good one. Rent mine and tell me what you think :D

Can't comment on the 25 as I've never laid hands on one, but I will be looking shortly for an ultra-lightweight set of sticks for travel/backpack... I'll start a new thread on that one.

Mike

millers, I'm looking at them too, I like the sprinter system, looks very quick and easy.

I have an Arrow 55 with two-stage carbon sticks, and I'm extremely impressed. Abel Cine here in NYC is pushing them hard, considering OConnor just can't deliver on anything approaching a reasonable schedule. I was looking at the new 1030D with 30L sticks, but the Miller seems to be as good, and is considerably cheaper from Abel.

Also, this NYC co-op idea intrigues me, and I'd like to subscribe to your newsletter. I'm in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Some of my notable gear:

Epic-M with Ti PL and Canon mount
Arri MB-20 II
OConnor CFF-1 follow focus
Bartech wireless FF
Flanders Scientific LM-2461W 10-bit 4:4:4 color-critical monitor (does DCI P3!)
Steadicam Zephyr with HD monitor
Matthews DC Slider

lots of other stuff...

Welcome to the club Nick. I might want to talk to you about your Steadicam at some point... I've never so much as laid hands on one, and I learn by playing... :-)

Mike

My EPIC X should be coming along soon. I won't be able to use it on a project right away - no PL glass, so could possibly rent out the body (perhaps a second body to a production) in the meantime. The only thing I'm unsure about is what kind of insurance is needed for doing something like that. The fact that a production has insurance is one thing, but assume we need to have something on our end as well. There are other insurance threads, so don't want to derail this one, but a DM would be much appreciated! Thanks.
