Hi, I was just wondering: I plan to buy a FF35 scarlet when it becomes available. However, I also plan to offer it for rental to help me finance some of the cost. I was just wondering: assuming the rough price given by RED at the moment of 9.75K (?) How much would a body like this go for per day??

Hi Jack,

First off, this forum has a real name policy. You can contact an administrator or Jarred to have your name changed.

I'm guessing not a heck of a lot, just my personal opinion.

Between the wonderfully affordability or Scarlet, plus the fact that there are going to be A LOT of them out there, I'm not expecting a healthy rental market.

If you use the 2% rule, which typically doesn't apply to owner operators anyway, you would be around $300/day for a $15,000 system.

But as I say, when every new film school graduate has a little rig, there will probably be more supply than demand.

Even with only 6000 Reds in the world, the rental rates have fallen greatly simply because everyone knows at least one desperate Red owner they can take advantage of! :nopity:

couldn't agree more. however, i thing they're nearing 7000 reds in the wild, no?

Most rental houses go by the following 'formula':

Single day - 5%
1 week - 3 single days
1 month - 10 single days

Of course, it depends on your location. If you are in Los Angeles or New York you won't get this because you will be competing with many others. If you are in Kansas or someplace, it's more realistic but there will be much less demand. You should factor in the cost of accessories etc., since a producer doesn't want to deal with 5 different rental houses; if you can't afford all the accessories people might want, make a deal with a local rental house.

If you have the skills, sell yourself as either the operator, DP, or DIT; that way you can make a little extra, you won't be sweating as much over the safety of the camera when it's out on rental, and you'll get more film credits and experience which is always a Good Thing.
