  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet Rental rates?

I respect Eric for supplying it all for a little less to the big corporate clients

I respect Domenic for giving back to the local community while actively competing in urban markets

More than anyone I want to balance both of these approaches and eventually travel with the Scarlet, filming nonprofits doing good work around the world because commercial jobs pay for the plane tickets. There's work and money anywhere but dying knowing you brought awareness to the world in your spare time is worth shooting weddings to pay for :)

Thank Ryan, just shooting the shit. Anyway back to Rental Rates: I think a full package of mine will go for $750 a day with DIT or Camera Assistant for filmmaking projects (this way I can have one of my studio assistants watch my gear).

$750 sounds exactly right for full package with media, follow focus, tripod & head, i/o module, including data wrangler or AC.
$500 for bare bones

my 8-lens set of Zeiss still primes goes for $400/day commercial, $300/day indie or student. how do other people handle different tiered clients--no rates on your website, always "email for a quote?"

my only concern is that the Adorama-style rental houses and independent owners will continually lower prices. we saw this happen in NY with Red One and 5D packages.

i really like seeing everyones rental rates. Super good info. i wish i had more to offer for my rentals in the way of ssd and batts. hopefully it doesnt hinder it too much.

Adorama in New York changed everything. 5D body for $24. Lenses for dirt cheap. No insurance required. Folks stepped down to compete.

Also we're talking 750 fora a camera setup with no lenses, no camera toys, no operator. Just Red parts, follow focus, tripod, matte box, a monitor and some kid with a laptop. If I were to operate, AC or DIT, my own rate would be an entirely separate matter.

$24 for a 5D Mark II body or a 5D (original) body? If a Mark II, that is nuts and one more reason to start shooting Scarlet X. A good kit in my opinion is about $20,000 with a basic lens at best. I don't see that many amateurs buying Scarlet X for this reason, but everyone I know, including my cousin (literally) has a 5D Mark II or 60 D these days.

honestly, even if you have a 5d you can make it look good if you know what you are doing. but i know lots of people looking for RED for the ability to have strong post control which you cant do with the 5d/7d/60d/etc. I made most of my companys money off stuff shot with the 5d. it financed my scarlet as well. glad now though that ill have more capabilities and more options now. just opens more doors and the more doors that are open, the better.

The link I tried to add at the start of this thread was to an Adorama post about rental rates.
They are most definitely undermining the entire industry by undercutting everyone.
They'll do well in the short term - but they're really just hurting everyone in the long run.

well whats nice about getting it from an actual owner is you get a sense of security and tech support etc. which im sure you dont get at all with adorama.

Lets just kick their ass!!

$24 for a 5D Mark II, technicolor and all. They know if you're attracted by the price of a cheap body, you'll rent market price accessories and over priced lights.

Adorama consistently gives awesome yet inconsistent gear--sometime the KiPro arrives with batteries, sometimes you have to ask for them. It's all fairly new looking, but so are the associates, and there's no camera bays to build out the kit and tinker / test while you check out. Their kitsch rate sheet, modeled after a passport, is strikingly appropriate: checkout feels like customs, wait in a line, talk to someone who asks you three or four questions, take your paperwork/gear and shove off.

Due back 9am, period. Versus DuAll camera where Steve and Tom will kindly help you kit out exactly what you need. Or an independent operator who knows his accessories better than their manufacturers.

I concur Steve at DuAll will actually take the time and walk you through everything.

You'll most likely end-up walking out the door with quite a few other fun kit pieces/lenses that you didn't intend on getting, but after playing with them, you really need them.

I have rented form adorama and the gear failed. Also with other rental companies I will keep anonymous because at least they keep the market real. This is why I am getting out of renting - and into owning. Not to say owning is full proof but it sure as hell gives me much more confidence - and that shows when talking to clients - let alone delivering a worthy product. Confidence is key.

At present I'm trying to get more footage for my reel and make contacts so me, my Scarlet, Canon 24-70, Arri kit, Kino Flo, LED Panels, timecode slate, TV Logic monitor, etc., are absolutely free here in NYC to productions that are serious about doing good work. heck, I'll even bring wireless mic systems if you're gonna help me get good footage!
