I'm wondering what the going rates are for a base Scarlet package. Would it be around the same as a One MX kit in the local area, generally speaking?

I heard the most common rental rate is about 10 percent. The most common price for a one day rental is about $600 and up for a scarlet x package

10% for a day? you have to be joking!

10% means you earn back the value of the camera in 1,5 weeks of rental....seems a little optimistic if you ask me;P If the camera effectively paid for itself in that time I would buy 20 of them! That being said, I think a more reasonable estimate would be 5% of value, of course this wouldn't pay for the camera in three weeks since you have to consider all the costs of running a rental operation, but 10% seems a bit over the top. I would be interested in seeing what others are doing though because I plan to rent my Scarlet myself when ever it arrives...

If I had the cash I would definatley buy 2 and rent 1 while shooting myself with the other. This would also give me the option of having a backup in case of service/repairs since I live quite far from RED/California;P

10% ?

Thats more than a little optimistic.

Closer to 2%.

Although I imagine a kit around the $500 mark wouldnt be unreasonable.

KIT mind you. Think the EPIC-M package but with more batteries.

i think 2% of your total kit value will be much more realistic, and even that is hard sometimes, i think between 1.5 and 2.5% will be realistic....

If you bought the $14,000 kit, then 2% of that kit is only $280...

Yep, but renting out that package needs stuff like lenses, mattebox, much more batteries, more media, a tripod, a rig and/or bars etc, so that will raise the price...

I feel bad for whoever gets suckered into renting camera systems, whether it be RED or any other brand for that matter. Just makes me cringe when that money could either be set aside and invested into owning the freakin thing or if you need it right now, buy it on credit / loan, cause even paying it off slowly, the interest won't even scratch the surface of what you would potentially lose throwing it away at a rental service.

Renting an arriflex or any film camera for that matter, lenses, obscure equipment and other "one time" things ... is a different story. Considering you could rent out your Scarlet while not in use, the potential for more business just owning a camera like this... and the fact that whatever it resells for will not end up as big of a loss as renting it, even for just a few days; boggles my mind how any sane person would actually rent this camera for a significant amount of time.

Guys,

In all seriousness the rental business is very hard, if you want to do it properly. Not just owning a bit of kit and making some money from someone taking it as it is, but renting as a business proposition requires a lot of knowledge, contacts and finance backed up by 24/7 attention to detail and availability. Anything else is poor service or a lack of awareness of the industry.

Thats over $25000 of kit, so about 2.5%, as a list price before a 3 day week and discounts is probably about right.

$645 a day for that kit is incredibly cheap, but that just reflects the incredibly compeptitive rentalmarket in L.A and should in no way reflect the prices in a less competitive market.
