Here is a brief Scarlet overview of last nights Q/A session:

Working prototypes are ready.

No date on Scarlet footage release.

Scarlet will be out before the end of the year. (which version was not specified).

Scarlet audio inputs accept microphone level signals and do provide pre-amps.

Scarlet power - Low power draw so a long battery life.

Fixed Scarlet lens - FF35 Equivalent of 28mm-224mm.

Fixed lens has standard 77mm thread.

Fixed will come before 2/3" cinema.

Fixed has 0.9 and 1.8 inbuilt ND filters.

Scarlet manufacturer has yet to be decided (although Jim hinted that it might be a done deal).

Scarlet S35 is a reality.

Scarlet S35 comes after EPIC.

Custom names may be a possibility.

Thank You

Thank You

Thanks for putting this together. I'm pretty much a lurker here(a really faithful lurker), and I'm happy to bide my time until a fully tested, bug free Scarlet is released. Go Jim & Co. Despite all of the impatient complaining as of late, I know what a monumental task it is to change the "game". As a photographer who always shoots raw, I know the power and flexibility of the format...can't wait!

Great news but I'm not holding my breath for Red... It's been "coming" for the past few years....

God knows I'm not complaining but life goes on (with other gear) until the Scarlet actually ships and I'll probably get one when it does. But after the 'nth' update, I feel nothing.......

Agreed Michael... although I do feel there is a little more pressure to get something out before the end of the year.. what with the AF-100 and 2nd generation DSLRs on the horizon.

Fingers crossed.

As much as I'm looking foward to Scarlet, if you look at RED's timing so far, I find it very unlikely that Scarlet will be out by the end of the year.

That's only 5 months.

But still, I take this as positive news; if it's not really out by the end of the year at least we can expect the first half of even first quarter of 2011, I guess.

It's solid enough news to avoid buying the 5D mkiii which is rumored to come out later this year or early next year.

That will most likely be Scarlet's biggest competitor, along with the AF-100.

I know that Terry believes that Scarlets will be available by the end of the year ;-)

Well they do have working production prototypes of Scarlet now. The move from that point to production is not as huge a hurdle as getting to the working prototype stage.
In December it will have been two years since the formal announcement of the new cameras. That is still a pretty fast development cycle for such a complex and advanced product, but with the resources Red can apply not impossible.

Except it's not clear whether Red has lined up a manufacturing partner. Jim Jannard said, "Epic will be manufactured in the us. Scarlet is still undecided.... At least we aren't saying." I don't know if he means it's undecided whether Scarlet will be manufactured stateside, or who will do it. Or whether Red has it all sorted out but has decided, in keeping with its new tighter-lipped approach, not to divulge those plans (or even that there are any plans). Obviously, Jim is confident that Scarlet will be released by the end of the year, but he also conceded that timelines aren't Red's forte.

We are only talking about the 2/3" brains in this case. Jim did say they probably couldn't meet price targets with US manufacture. But once the contract is signed, 60-90 days should be enough time to set up a production line these days. With prototypes done, they have to have some capacity in place already for producing the various components.

Thank you Jim.

as I worked in a production line some years ago, I would say that 6 weeks are more than enough to set up such a line including prototyping and testing .....
