Hi everyone

I'm a long time (REALLLLLLY LONG TIME) lurker on REDUSER, but finally decided to create an account . However, I am a novice to all things RED in the real-world (as I have never been fortunate enough to own, nor even hold, a RED camera before), and must admit that I am somewhat confused at some of the Scarlet information provided. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could please help me with the following questions

1. I am coming from a Canon 60D, which has a crop-factor of x1.6. For example, my APS-C Sigma 30mm F1.4 lens has a field-of-view of a 48mm when used on my 60D. If I were to use this lens on Scarlet, what field of view would I get at 5K, 4K, 3K, 2K, 1K?

2. If I were to shoot at, for example, 2K, would the Scarlet perform worse in low-light as it will be using less of the sensor? Or does it use the entire sensor, and then down-res to 2K via software?

3. Does Scarlet have built-in ND filters?

4. Does Scarlet have XLR? If not, must I buy an accessory to be able to record audio?

5. Does Scarlet have a head-phone jack?

6. Is HDRx something one would use all the time when shooting at 24fps in order to achieve the highest dynamic-range possible? Or should it be only used in situations where one is filming and the light will be/is fluctuating from bright to dark?

7. Is there some sort of accessory available that would allow me to connect the REDMAG 1.8” 64GB to an external USB3.0 drive for quick transfer?

Sorry about all the questions everyone - I would love to purchase a Scarlet as soon as possible, but think it would be wise for me to understand exactly what I am purchasing before I do so as the money I have saved up for Scarlet is virtually all the money I have...

Sorry again for all the questions! And thanks in advance to any replies

Hi Simon!

1. Someone else will be able to answer this better then me.
2. I never had this issue in 2K with the RED. So i guess not. But keep in mind shooting Slow-Motion means Higher Shutter Speed so you need more light.
3. No, need a mattebox or screw on filters.
4. You can input sound yes, but probably need an adaptor, I must say i don't know exactly the setup needed.
5. I don't know for now me neither.
6. You have like 13-18 stops of range... it's a raw camera Simon!
7. I don't think so.

keep in mind an operational kit will be about 20 000$ at least in my mind.

Thanks for the reply, Gabriel, much appreciated!

1. I hope someone can help me with this, I'm pretty confused haha.

2. So, when shooting 2K, is less of the sensor used, or the entire sensor is used, but down-scaled to 2K in camera?

3. I have variable ND filters for my lenses, so I guess I'll just stick with those for now.

4. So I can monitor sound levels on the Scarlet? Not having the ability to monitor sound while filming is one of the main reasons I detest working with DSLR...

5. Hopefully someone can help us both here!

6. Haha, I know - however, would you shoot HDRx all the time? Giving that you get more DR?

7. Looks like the "RED STATION REDMAG" has e-sata - so I guess being able to transfer onto an external hard-drive via e-sata will be possible.

Besides an extra battery or two, and an extra 64GB 1.8" RED MAG, wouldn't this setup be enough?:

Would an operational kit really cost me $20,000...my max is $15,000...

Hi all

1) 4k should be around 1.6, similar to APS-C if I got the info from other threads correctly. There's one with a nice chart. Note that APS-C lenses will not cover the full 5k sensor
2) It only uses part of the sensor to save processing power. So I'd guess noise characteristics should remain the same
3) No
4) No, balanced jacks (3.5mm(?)). But you can use e.g a Beachtek adaptor/preamp. There should be a module in the future that has XLRs
5) Not sure, but if I'm not mistaken, the EPIC has it, so Scarlet should have it too
6) On a Scarlet? Probably not, as it significantly limits your framerate/resolution. You might consider it on an EPIC
7) So far, the Stations are USB-2 FireWire-800 and E-Sata only IIRC

Hope i didn't mix something up here...
