We were using our Scarlet in the field today with our Angenieux 25-250mm Zoom Lens on it for the first time. It was mounted via an Allstar Universal Mount and Allstar PL Adapter. We've used this kind of set up on our Red-Ones many times before with great results.

I bought the Scarlet Brain used and it was thoroughly checked out by Red, then the Ownership Transfer went through.

According to the guys at Red, when they do an evaluation and bring a camera up to specs, they adjust the back-focus. But, when we did our shots today, and zoomed in on the target to focus, then zoomed out, it went out of focus. This, or course, means the back-focus is not adjusted correctly for the Angenieux.

Can someone please tell me how to adjust the back-focus on our Scarlet myself? I see no easy way to do this like on the Red-One.

Two other issues occurred that concern me as well:

1 - A red square has appeared in the center of the viewfinder and/or monitor out of nowwhere. I had not changed any setting to my knowledge, and it says at the top of the monitor "auto focus" ??? I have no auto focus with the Angenieux Lens, so where did that come from, and how do I turn it off?

2 - When I went to dismount our first SSD Card, it would NOT do it. I pushed the buttons on the front of the SSD Module many times and it would not indicate that the SSD Card was OK to remove. I turned the camera off and removed it anyway, and all the shots came out fine. What the hell was that all about? The second SSD Card dismounted just fine. Is this some kind of glitch typical of Scarlets, or what?

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated. I have GOT to get the bugs worked out on this Scarlet so we can shoot without problems or concerns, and so the camera is trustworthy.

Man, technology is a blessing and a curse at the same time! Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeesh!!

Thanks for your time.

The lens needs to be checked out, Cine Zooms do need to be serviced from time to time & repair bills can be in the thousands if the lens has gone a long time without TLC.
The mounts need to be checked, very small errors can cause an issue, even dirt or dust can be enough .

Read the manual for adjusting the Scarlet back focus, however it's probably correct already.......

Backfocus: Get the Scarlet manual, it talks about where/how to adjust backfocus... Although if you're potentially having problems you best do it properly (REDfocus?!) just to make sure. It could be your A-Mount not fitting right on DSMC cameras?

1.) Someone may have accidentally put autofocus on, or accidentally hit one of the buttons that enables it (on the side handle or redmote). In either case, you can go through the menus to disable it (again, the manual tells you how to get there -- I don't remember off hand). Also the red square is focus confirm -- not autofocus, but rather it goes yellow and then green when the subject in the box is in focus... Bare in mind, it doesn't work all that great (I rarely see green on my manual focus lenses).

2.) You can also dismount the SSD by using the onscreen menus/options -- much more bulletproof [Come to think of it, maybe one of the SSD modules was mapped to "enable auto focus" and you just weren't hitting them simultaneously.] It's in the secondary onscreen menu under SSD. There's a button in there to eject. It takes three clicks.

George, if you have the side handle, it's easy to hit the shortcut button that cycles through the different focus options. Also, for the back focus, keep in mind that the actual screw the adjusts the back focus is under another screw that needs to be removed first!
