  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet pricing ...?

Red has never said that the fixed scarlet is changed so it's not shootable out of the box, jarred even recently mentioned the only thing you'll need is a cf card, I'm 100% sure the fixed scarlet is ready out of the box to shoot, the only question is how much is the price increase.

I'm sure if you called red they would confirm that the fixed scarlet is indeed shootable out of the box, you just need a card to shoot on.

I think I may be missing something. Someone feel free to point me in the right direction/ At some point we were promised a shootable scarlet 8x fixed at ~$3700. I'm pretty sure at one point this was "shootable out of the box" so assuming a bare min of some viewfinder, battery, etc.

Then, the pricing was removed.

Then we get the Oct. 30th announcement with mentions of "mild price increase."

My questions:
Will there still be a shootable out of the box Scarlet?
Will "mild price increase" still apply over what we were promised at one point (shootable, ~$3700)

Or did the shootable out of the box get totally scrapped, or does the "mild price increase" not apply here?

I'd like to ping in on this as well

for fixed lens scarlet brain you would only need

side CF module - 500 (media)
Side Handle - 950 (control)
8 GB CF card - 165 (media)

you still need a viewing option and as far as I can tell the best price option so far is either the 2.8" touchscreen from RED for $900 or the ikan 5.6" HD monitor package for 850 which I will round up to 900 which brings the total after brain price to

$2,515

For 2/3" cinema it could honestly be the same because Jarred confirmed for me that as of now brains will come with a PL mount - "subject to change" of course

seen here - post 859

you could always take the difference in price between the fixed lens brain and the cinema brain and spend that on a lens knowing that a) the lens you can afford with that money might now be as good as the zoom on the fixed but b) that you do of course have the option for saving up for primes or better zooms later

overall I think everyone should take a chill pill and wait until Nov. 30th. What's the point in trying to make definite plans on whether or not you can afford this system until you have concrete specs and prices to go on.

Also, to be realistic the fixed rigged I had described here with lets say a speculative brain price of 3500 would in total only be about 6,000.

thats a list of cameras you can get for under 6000. Notice that out of all these cameras none of them will get you RAW, 1080p60, or any framre rate above 60p for that matter, and anywhere near the modularity of RED. Even the interchangeable lens cameras are going to be smaller sensor cameras (1/3") rendering your 35mm glass (which is barely useable on 2/3" scarlet) and even some of your 16mm glass totally useless for anything less than wildlife, sports and extreme telephoto shooting. Not to mention you'd be hard pressed to find a nikon, c, or pl mount for those cameras. I couldn't find any. Also, they all seem to be 3ccd which won't work right without CA.

I'm not bashing those cams, they are great depending on what you need (event shooting on a budget especially). I am just saying you should all wait until you have the information, or until you can't possibly wait any longer for it before you make a decision.

Of course when planning for a camera always have a plan B.

edit: the above listing was for 2/3" fixed BRAIN and 2/3" CINEMA.....there are no concrete details on the specifications or price of 2/3" FIXED KIT so I won't even try to speculate on that

no that is a different mic in the gunner.. :) The snap in mic is much more low profile and hugs the body.

Does this mean they're developing mics too now? If so, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that the "snap-in" mic will be included with the 2/3" Fixed. Would make it more of a "complete" package IMO.

EDIT: Jarred's post is from the "October 30th Announcement Feedback" thread.
