  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet preview...

Just got word. No streaming of pictures of event. Sorry guys.

Where did that come from? I could have sworn hearing Jim et al saying streaming of the event would be allowed via their WiFi.

Although I think the event is just Jim typing into the computer and everyone watching the big screen so it might not be as much of a loss as we would hope it would be ...

They could be trying to save their wifi from the onslaught it will be receiving with everyone trying to order. Does anyone know about how many people they are allowing in?

WiFi off wouldn't stop someone from using 4G, would it? Even if they had to, they could shoot something, step outside and upload it, and within minutes of it happening, it would be on air.

I also hope that Red's web team is at battle stations, you never know who may want the red site to crash and spoil the event.

If you were expecting 3K for $3K... this is bad news.

Jim

I'm actually glad about this. Wasn't ready see thousands of poorly-shot videos in 3K by amateurs, flooding vimeo and YouTube and thus disgracing the name of Red.
People forget sometimes about talent and think that if they have this camera they'll automatically be able to shoot blockbusters. Red gives you the TOOLS (awesome tools btw) but YOU need to know how to work with them.

if Red One as a $20k kit could outperform $35k cameras, and the Red Epic-X as a $30k kit can outperform $50k cameras, I fully expect the Scarlet (if it were) $10k, to humiliate $15k cameras.

I don't expect miracles, I just expect the same old RED level competition, nothing more, and nothing less.

EPIC-X $30k kit? EPIC-X brain costs $36,500 (you can't even turn the camera on with brain only). $46,000 when it has same configurations as Alexa, one battery, one 64GB SSD, travel charger, EVF etc...

Yes but remember to make them both equal out of the box Alexa would need a way to record Arriraw and that jumps the Alexa's price significantly, and there is, higher frame rates, higher resolution, and many more all in a smaller package... but each with very different specializations to each their own.

This may be the realest post on this site

Fantastic post. Completely agree. I am fortunate enough, after many years to finally be in a position where I will almost certainly be able to afford a good scarlet package. But of all the cameras to be posting for keeping the glass ceiling in place to keep the "povs out" Scarlet? The intended democratizer? Really??

If if I have to endure several thousand more cat videos being shot at Unprecedented levels of quality - in order to be able to see the next young scruffy haired Peter jackson climb out if his hobbit hole from nowhere to astound the world with his backyard indie - then it will be well worth it.

Anyhow, workflow will be all the filter that is required. Plenty of pros who are disappointing story tellers with sub standard attitudes, but I don't begrudge them a right to create either.

Best
Lliam

I had a nightmare last night that I forgot my ipad and laptop both.

I agree with you to a degree.

But I really don't think you'd see a ton of consumers buy it, even at that price. After they realize there computer won't support it, and the amount of work that goes into the workflow.

The main point I disagree with is while that is certainly a possibility, limiting those with less money, and killing progression isn't a good thing. Now I don't expect it to be 3K for 3K, I expect it to be much more...I just don't really like when people are hoping things are priced outside of others reach simply because they think people that can't afford it will have less talent. That's a sad way to think. I know plenty with less than I that are great shooters and editors. Some of us have been blessed and given opportunities others haven't.

Just because people don't have money, doesn't mean they lack the skills and talents required. I really hope many that take up Epics, R1's and Scarlets will share them with others that are less fortunate. It would be cool to see Reducation's popping up in many places.

Absolutely. I hope the price increase is not connected to that idea but to actual features. When Jim decided to abandon the 'soccer moms' concept (not sure if he ever framed it that way) 3k for 3k, we got more pro features and the price has risen to roughly 6k. I wonder what will the new price increase bring. More features or just the new price? I hope the truth is at least somewhere in between

There has yet to be any mention of any price increase just to equal out with the EPIC price increase from 2011 to 2012, so as Scarlet hasn't been promised at any price, my guess is that it is just starting with the higher price due to manufacturing costs, as opposed to introducing them in the new year as RED doesn't have to stay true to any price point (again, as they never officially announced it), differing from EPIC in that regard.

I mostly agree with the above statements but I also think it's important not pigeonhole people or jump to conclusions about how one got to where they are today or tomorrow both financially and success wise. There are people with a ton of talent but no work ethic. And Vise versa, and of course the people in between. Some people get lucky and meet the right people and some don't. Some places may have less opportunities than others. But at the end of the day and in my opinion there is always a way to achieve your goals, no matter what, sometimes it just takes a lot more time and work to make that happen. But luckily you appreciate it so much more at the end of the day when you truly earned it.

Red has always been aggressive with their pricing structure vs. the value and quality you recieve in return. So if one is able to afford the Scarlet or the Epic, etc, fantastic, but if the Scarlet prices pushes people out the price range than luckily we live in a time when there are so many other technologies available at an affordable price that they can use while they build up their businesses or careers to the point when they can afford the higher end technology.

It's all just part of the journey. ;)
