  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet preview...

Well said!!!
I am going to hold judgement until the actual announcement.

I will always appreciate what Red has brought the industry, even though I may have to go a different route because of the cost factor. (Sony is such a dirty word in my book.)

However, it is pretty offensive how some are acting. Red does not owe me anything, on the other hand I do not owe Red anything either. I do not owe them money, good will, trust or respect. That is something I give (or may in the case of cash), but I do not owe.

Until the 3rd, I won't pass judgement. I just can't believe some of the attitude from the more well off here. I am employed at a TV station in a small/midsize market. I want to start doing narrative beyond the 30 second spots. Does this mean I am not a professional? If I was to go out (starting up) there is not enough money in the market I am in to justify a camera much beyond 10k, (plus living expensise)? I am sorry I am not willing to pay as much money for a camera as some, but that does not make me any less a professional.

From what I see and hear, it's certainly not a side conversation. It's not as immediate as the archiving discussions of course - but certainly not a "side conversation" - there's some real disruption coming for sure in TV land.

What you see as disruption, I see as just a continuation of what's being done now with some modifications based on new technology being available. If the primary cameras that are used for shooting shows are all 4K capable - which will likely be the case once the F65 shows up and when the Alexa is ultimately updated - it just means that the archives will be 4K instead of HD, assuming they're recorded that way. That has already been the case with the final 6 episodes of ER, all three seasons of Southland, and the first season of Shameless, but it happened because they were all shot primarily on Red and they were made for Warners, which takes its archiving pretty seriously. That doesn't mean that all shows at Warners have been ordered to shoot on Red - in fact, Shameless has shot its second season on Alexa. But it does mean that Warners is interested in archiving the highest quality possible for its shows given what is available, in a format that is open (we used DPX files for all of the projects I just mentioned). That is what I meant by resolution being a side conversation.

BTW, since all shows are currently being finished in HD - something I do expect to continue - those higher resolution archives are a separate issue and an additional cost, one which some studios will likely bear and others won't.

*UPDATE* The “Historic” November 3, 2011 Announcement [CR1]

*UPDATE*
I was also told that we’ll see at least two compact cine lenses, and possibly a third. No focal lengths were mentioned.

More hints?

Price: sub $15,000 – possible down to $10,000
Image quality: Alexa good
SDI outs
XLRs (audio)
Piviting & detachable monitors and grips
PL mount and EF mount options
Resolution – 4k capture, 2k recording

4K, S35, Alexa good image, XLR's and monitor + other stuff for 10K$? People, we have a winner.

If Scarlet is 3K 2/3 for 10K$.. then it's bad news for RED.

Canon could, and very well might make the claim that it's not 4k that makes something cinema and professional with 1080p being dead, but it's a 2/3" chip that's dead, and a FF35 sensor that offers the most cinematic look.

I've felt for some time that if Canon put the guts of a 5D or 7D into an XL-H1 like body, and sold it for under about $7k the thing would be a huge hit. But I also know the DSLR and video divisions in Canon are like separate companies. So who knows what they're about to release?

Thursday should be an interesting day, that's for sure.

Potential game-changer confirmed.

OK a thought. Scarlet S35 became EPIC-S, guessed price point (RED quote): $12k.

Quite a few respected people here on this thread are saying 'if you were expecting a sub-$10k camera, think again". Jim says "Scarlet is now a professional camera. It will be more expensive"

EPIC-S was tentatively scheduled for the 'fall'.

*checks temperature outside.... yep! More like winter in NYC in fact....*

Maybe, maybe, 2/3" has been dropped and what was to have been EPIC-S *IS* now 'Scarlet', again, and will be going on sale on the 3rd...

Doesn't suit me: I'd sooner have Scarlet Fixed sub $10k; that I could afford without hesitation as a simple second unit cam. We'll see. Whatever happens, I trust Jim; I'm sure it will be... Epic :-)

Jim just answered to those speculations on other thread:

Sounds like EPIC... lower your expectations. Really. Not close. This is what bugs me. And you get something like this from where?

Jim

All I can say is why do so many people forget how HUGE the 2/3" sensor game is?

SPORTS people... not everyone wants or needs SHALLOW DOF... sports and 2/3"chips equal EVERYTHING IN FOCUS>

Sorry, just re-posted what Josh did!

Agree with Tim. There are a lot of us out here that have been lugging around 2/3 cameras to shoot all sorts of things who like 2/3". Heck, if you have the lens open and shoot on the long end, you can still get decent shallow DOF too. Not like Epic, or a 5D, but not bad either.

S35 and higher aperture and ISO does the same. It requires good ISO performance though, but Canon has this.

I guess you must consider just about every cinematographer currently shooting a television show some kind of mentally challenged person. Because at this point in time, Alexa absolutely owns the network/high end cable television production market. Now, will this change? Yes, probably this coming pilot season, when the F65 and Red's newer entries are more available. And Arri will, of course, update the current Alexa at some point. But what has always confounded me is the attitude here that fearmongering is the way to effect change. It's constantly pointed out that "the future" means higher resolution, and therefore anything you do at a lower resolution is going to be worthless, so you're wasting your time shooting with it. It's always noted that somehow only material originated in 4K or higher has any future worth, conveniently overlooking the fact that much of what is shot has no future worth anyway because it's just not very good, regardless of resolution. It seems to me that a more positive message would bring much more immediate results. Pointing out how higher resolution images produce better matte extractions, for instance. Or how higher resolutions allow for more flexibility in framing for distribution formats that are of a lower resolution. Or how higher resolution images can withstand higher compression ratios, making it easier to achieve better results in less storage space. Or how higher resolution minimizes aliasing effects such as moire. I rarely see these things pointed out, but they're much more significant and appealing than the negative message of "if you shoot 1080 you're an idiot and you'll be sorry 10 years from now" does.

Of course that's all fine and good. I think you missed the angle of humor. Apparently a few others missed it as well, while some got it. It's hard trying to drive one's true meaning from a forum post though. It was meant to be an over-the-top commentary in response to several other posts in this thread.. And it was indeed over the top. It really depended on the context of what preceded it and perhaps I should've quoted about 8 other posts to frame it better. Oh, well. On the other hand, it was factual in a technical, what's-coming sense. I'm not kidding or exaggerating about the performance of the 4S compared to the 7D. And all the 4K / Quad-HD items I mentioned are all but upon us. I already have model numbers for 4K/QHD panels from a couple of my distributors and will be getting a 55" QHD demo panel myself -- I'm expecting April/May timeframe.

And for you 7D guys reading along, I'm not trying to bash anyone or degrade anyone. The 7D still wins hands-down compared to an iPhone for it's versatility, sensor format, lens interchangeability, etc.. But we're still looking at the progressive nature of technology, which continues to accelerate. I owned a 7D in the past, in fact I owned two of them. And I own a Panasonic GH2 now. Every camera or tool has its place... As much as I love the RED One and the EPIC, they're not always the right tool for the job at hand. But when I also consider that by the end of next year, between Apple and Samsung, there will probably be close to 3.5 million tablet devices in the hands of consumers, with resolution that is greater than or equal to 1080p, one has to seriously consider their choice for image acquisition and delivery moving forward. Of course, there is a balance, there are political forces at work within the industry, there are financial considerations and more. We all can't instantly jump into a 4K future for every project moving forward. OTOH, we can't simply ignore it until it's here and the consumers are craving content.

As I said in my other post, this is the same argument I made way back when HD was emerging. Here we go again...

Scarlet is now a professional camera. It will be more expensive. And there will be no discounts for RED ONE owners.

That is all the bad news there is...

Jim

I thought it always was a professional camera. So you call it a professional camera and you up the price basically? Hmmm. I guess we'll see how much more professional scarlet has become and how much more it'll be come November 3rd.

Personally I hope it's the medium format Dragon Chip

I think now that Scarlet will be 2/3. Why? Because RED doesn't have the ISO performance of Canon DSLR's and for news/live tv/sports/etc you have to have deeper DOF which can't be archieved with S35 without bumping the aperture and ISO up. Scarlet will be for TV and EPIC for movies. Scarlet is made to conquer the TV world.

Troll around here much?

first you are wrong with the specs.

It will be a 1080p camera - I know because I have seen it.

Secondly, you are obviously baiting response here. Wait until Thursday, then get back to us with your speculation and Trolling behavior.

Cheeers.

Troll? Those specs have been posted on few pretty big sites. I will take their word over yours. But like you said, in thursday we will know.

There is a big difference between a sensor that "sees 4k" and records 4k, and one that "sees 4k" and records 1080p. If you want to get technical the GH2 already "sees 4k" - we can talk resolution all day long.

Something they left out is that the Canon records in a Logarithmic gamut. That's kinda cool for them, one plus I could give them. It's no Raw though.

Ultimately the choice is up to you what to spend your money on. I know someone who bought a Canon XF105 last week. When I found out, I almost spit my Cappucino out all over the table, but yeah - that's what is great about America - you HAVE THE POWER TO CHOOSE. So, yes - please choose what suits your work best.

I see some of the posts you have done around here, and they are provocative at best - I'm just saying - keep your eyes peeled and reserve judgement for the announcement. At least you have many choices you didn't even just last year.
