  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet preview...

Some of us are doing chipped windshield and furniture moving spots that play at 3am in small cities, and a doc or indie short now and then. Others make spots for the likes of Lexus, or Calvin Klein that play during the Superbowl, or they work for studios, large prodco's or such.

Some own houses they paid too much for when the going was good. Have spouses that can't get work. Student loans. Kids. Others are single, debt free, and live in small apartments.

And yes, some simply are rich. Be that by hook or by crook.

And some are willing to take on more debt and accept more risk as they see a more profitable future.

lol . . . WE ARE THE 100%!

money...money...
I think when Jim created this company : it was all about passion. And I'm truly sure about it as the RED ONE is the best meaning I can find.
Yes we all work with our gears and earn money but there are still people here and I'm sure people which love cameras like Jim, like me and like a lot of people here or we would not be so passionate to debate about the Scarlet price.
Anyway I managed to get my School where I'm working to buy a RED ONE and we will probably buy the EPIC... I know that I will probably touch a little bit my dream...
But in my true dream, a simple dream coming from a simple guy, not a rich one, just a passionate one who love cameras, who think that a camera can be the same as a nice PIANO where people can imagine so much nice things,
I though that I would be able to afford this instrument, alone, only for me, and RED would make my dreams come true... now it does not smell the same... and I'm sad so I'm writing this here because I'm not happy
And I also don't undertand the way Jim is announcing this new ... pretty simple cold words without explanation, it looks like he is upset about something ... about us... I don't know ...
Don't want to see RED becoming as ARRI or CANON ... I like this family where a simple guy like me can talk with so nice people around here ...
I have a dream ...

The Sony F3 S-log is giving you 1.92k out of every channel, so if you count all those pixels you're getting almost 6k. However, all Red cameras are much superior to the F3--better image quality, specs--and I suspect Scarlet will be the F3 killer. Easily.

Well, not it doesn't give that rez, and if you'd measured it, you'd know that. And no, you don't get 6k from an F3, that's just plain silly. And yes, agreed to the superiority on the RED side, but it's a RED forum and I'm biassed.

People who buy an EPIC VS. EPICs are probably separated by about 20-25K. Similar rez but slight changes in setup and also potentially upgrades vs, non upgrades. Then there is the bunch who want the epic for 3K which is ridiculous when most of us have saved or gone into debt for our craft.

I have to share this story. This is why I love the medium of film.

In 1980, my father a Jazz musician, decided to spend a considerable amount of money on a video camera.

The first thing he decided to film was an interview of his 88 yr old father, about his life.

1 month later my Grandfather passed away.

Fast forward, 2011, I am making a documentary about my Grandfather and his children, featuring the same footage, and in 3 months I will have my first son, who will some day see it and learn about his Great Grandfather.

Camera IS the closest we will ever have to a Time Machine. Its a True Gift of Technology.

Epic for 3k LOL

Then once again why wait for Scarlet why not just buy an EPIC??????

Because a completely outfitted Epic system with lenses, storage, misc bits will run $100K to a fixed lens Scarlet's $15K. It has been mentioned here before: if you are stretching to justify a camera body at $7K - you might want to do a spreadsheet and include all the support pieces that will be required to effectively use it. Probably double the initial camera cost for a basic system cost. Shooting everything at 5K 300FPS HDR sounds cool until you try to store, process, transfer and archieve the terabytes of data that results.

Yes sir! An amazing instrument indeed. Both moving and still images.

LOL.......I guess this answers allot of questions lol

Is everyone on reduser rich? seems like money is no issue here if so how come u all haven't bought an epic or redone lol

I own an Epic M. It was worth Every Penny I paid. And, I'm still looking forward to Scarlet.

The Only way I made enough money to get into the Epic was by being a Red User.

That, and Hustling.

I am going to hold judgement until the actual announcement.

I will always appreciate what Red has brought the industry, even though I may have to go a different route because of the cost factor. (Sony is such a dirty word in my book.)

However, it is pretty offensive how some are acting. Red does not owe me anything, on the other hand I do not owe Red anything either. I do not owe them money, good will, trust or respect. That is something I give (or may in the case of cash), but I do not owe.

Until the 3rd, I won't pass judgement. I just can't believe some of the attitude from the more well off here. I am employed at a TV station in a small/midsize market. I want to start doing narrative beyond the 30 second spots. Does this mean I am not a professional? If I was to go out (starting up) there is not enough money in the market I am in to justify a camera much beyond 10k, (plus living expensise)? I am sorry I am not willing to pay as much money for a camera as some, but that does not make me any less a professional.

One of RED's criterias for Scarlet is that it is shooting ready out of the box. Not only meaning that all the parts are there, but more importantly that it's not running on beta firmware (if there ever was a RED firmware that isn't beta).

There's also quite a bit of prestige surrounding Scarlet. This camera will be brought up front and center in various tech blogs, magazines and whatnot. I think the whole RED team would really hate Scarlet to take second place to anything within reasonable price range.

I don't think Scarlet has been without frustration on RED's part. There has been VERY little footage over the years; it has been pretty silent all around. I don't think they ever quite reached the right level for them to post anything. Jarred's video is cool, but it's a completely sealed off environment with artificial light. That's hard to relate to.

No, I don't think there has been much time or opportunity to mess around with Scarlet's configurations too much. And I definitely don't think that they've had the luxury to develop many cameras in parallel.

With the lytro like 3d ability 3k is more desirable, so that would be good if it is available yet.

Andree, you may miss what I am saying, just because a prototyoe chip is used does not mean the camera is some mess and not finalised, just standard to make hand full of chips for development before making thousands, tens of thousands, millions etc. Upgrading the sensor can be a change in the optical path and outside the lens itself minor. If the present lens all ready covers it because the increase is minor, and as would be desirable to reuse the lens in a future model, then it could involve as little as a firmware update and maybe new sensor mounting part. However, in reality, if all the parts were manufactured before the earthquake, incoyding the sensir, then there maybe little way we would get more until the stockpile of parts have been used up and the next scarket is finished. Lets hope not, and they had a chance to go 4k etc.

The other changes they may make would more likely be often refunements, as you said.

Thank. And everybody chill out, there will be enough time for general love, or throttling others on the board on and after November the third, so lets chill out.
