Scarlet preview...

I wish scarlet to be :nono::nono: 5k for no more than $14000.

Well, in the real world these days money, or lack thereof, is the only thing standing in the way of many dreams. For a pro making money from your craft a new and versatile tool is a must; for people with money to burn is an adventure; for the struggling artist a dream chase. If money is the only bad news then it will definitely be bad news for many. But, well, that is reality 2011.
But see, this is kind of a complex thing because if you look at it as an artist, are you saying in order to make my art I have to have a Scarlet, and because it is out of my price range, I can't make art? I'm trying to be sensitive here because the economic situation is not good and many people are struggling. So please understand that I'm actually trying to ask this question in a tactful way. Because quite honestly, I believe one can make art with a hacked GH2 for $1000 right now. One could also make art with a $200 HDV camcorder. The hacked GH2 comparison works better because it's closer to Scarlet than the $200 cam but my point is, what is the equivalent in other art forms. A better quality oil paint? A higher quality canvas? Artists make art with the tools they can afford, or build, or borrow, etc. right?

Now, if we are talking about commercial production, then that seems like a better argument. Perhaps the technology is what could drive certain aspects of that. Then again, I've been on many commercial shoots that used DSLRs, which IMHO were far inferior to what they could have afforded to use. The commercials did okay.

Scarlet is going to be great. There's no doubt in my mind about that. But as filmmakers, indie producers, whatever the case may be one has to put everything into perspective. The price of the camera will be set, and whether that price is right for you is largely dependent on where it fits in your economic landscape. There's only so much RED can do here. It seems they have realized that they want to hit a particular market - professional. That has equated to a higher price point based on the features they wanted in the camera.

The title reads, 'PREVIEW'.

I raced to open this thread to expect Preview Footage.
OH MAN! I was going through that too. I thought we were going to see some samples or a picture.

The Cost of Technology never deterred true art

Very true. The best painters in the world can do wonders with a pencil and paper.

Jim,

As long as you have left my set of 6x T1.9 PL Mini-Primes for $6K alone, we are a go ;-) Full manual is fine.

(Unrealistic expectations were already fulfilled when you offered myself and others the Epic-X stages, and being able to take advantage, and yes, "Take Advantage" is how I oft describe the deal to any and all who will listen!! You, as Red, are GIVING the opportunity to take almost $45K in gear home for just over $18K with the MX upgrade.... That my dear friend, is taking advantage of your generosity.... And for this offer, all thanks to you and the accountants you have tied up in a dark basement somewhere.)

A pro package is going to be at least $20K when you add up all the bits in ADDITION to the Camera... the Scarlet will have REDCODE RAW and SSD and all kinds of RAW PROCESSING TOOLS (for free)
all stuff that comes with the $58K EPIC line... for FREE.

And an incredible extended warranty program.... its a bargain under $20K

scarlet 6k for $16000 would be another good deal.:yesnod::yesnod:

Well stated. I'm one of those guys who is looking at $60K++ for an Epic package that so many R1's enjoy for much less - so seems fair that I pay the same for a Scarlet and are in a single shipping queue.

People get to wrapped up in waiting for technology to be cheap enough. I'm super excited for scarlet, but If you are really talented, really creative, an excellent camera is just the icing on the cake. 5 or 6 years ago people were begging for cameras like the 5d. If you wait for the perfect camera, at the pefect price you will never create anything because it doesn't exist. People better be realistic about scarlet. Scarlet will not be an epic and will have features that fit it's price in comparison. We will make amazing things with it:)

Scarlet is now a professional camera. It will be more expensive. And there will be no discounts for RED ONE owners.

That is all the bad news there is...

Jim

Pro-Camera? What the hell have I been waiting for all these years...and Jim, by the way, you say there is no reward for all we SCARLETEERS or faithfuls?

It is not the end of the world, if you can't afford the Scarlet then there are very good cheaper alternatives so don't worry too much, buy what u can now make money with ur work and save up for a Scarlet =) It will be there when you can afford it =) This is the way of the world if you want something bad enough you can save up for it =)

After all the generous discounts, I would not expect a discount on Scarlet as well, but I am wondering if original RED One owners still get priority when ordering Scarlet and how that would be implemented. Certainly understandable if this is still not the case.

If there is a Scarlet with an S35 sensor under 10K I'm satisfied.

This is exciting - Scarlet has been my goal for a long time, but if it crosses that 10k line, I think I'll have to sit it out. Looks like this will be the case, can't see a professional camera to be any cheaper than 10k. Sadface
