Along with everyone else, I'd love to see some R3D files from the Scarlet 8X!

One of the reasons is to see if my desktop can handle them. I'm sure it couldn't handle 5K files from Epic, but I can't afford an Epic anyway. I hope it can handle 3K files from the Scarlet 8X.

What do you think will be required to work with these files? My system has an Intel Core i7 920 processor, 12 GB RAM, GTX 260 video card, two 7200 rpm data HDD in RAID 0 and I'm running Premiere Pro CS5.

If I need further upgrades, what's the most bang for the buck? Upgrade to a Core i7 980X? Do I need to jump up to two velociraptors in RAID 0? Do I need to put my operating system and Premier on an SSD? Do I need to use an SSD for the data files, too? Do I need all of them? Or is what I have sufficient?

Opinions?

Well I have a workstation at home that is marginally higher spec'd and it eats through 4K R3Ds no problem. The only wildcard is the graphics card and even then I've only got a GTX 285 running. All the other specs should be more than enough for cutting scarlet footage together. You would still really need a RedRocket to play back 4K at full Rez but my system happily messes with R3Ds at half playback resolution.

Why not play with some 4K files in your system and get a feel for what your system likes. There is plenty hanging around on here. I suppose though it really depends what you want from a system.

You have a fine system, and it is well more than enough for natively editing 3K. The only icing on the cake you need is a Geforce GTX 460 1 GB for CUDA and add a third HDD for RAID5. Then, you are set.

Of course, if you absolutely need to play at full rez, full debayer (I don't see the sense in it) realtime, then you need a RedRocket. Personally, I think for all purposes the Premiere Pro CS5 preview is good enough.

Thanks for the responses! I used the hack to get the GTX-260 to run CUDA with Premier.

I forgot that there were 4K clips on here! I'll track them down.

Damn, I was worried about if my computer could handle it. I'm glad to hear that it should be OK.

What exactly is the function of the RedRocket?

How about the Precision M4500 Mobile work station for 3K editng in CS5, spec here..
Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Processor (6M Ca 1 che, 1.6GHz)
8GB Dual-channel 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
500GB 7.2k RPM SATA Hard Drive
NVIDIA® Quadro FX 880M Graphics with 1GB memory

I have a dumb question (yet usefull to me) : can we downconvert from the camera (or with redcine) to lower resolution RAW ? (like if I shoot 3K but want to have it 2K or 1080P for post or whatever reasons ?)

Go for a 2TB disk RAID5.

I don't think you can convert to RAW with lower resolution. But you can export to 16 bit TIFF with a very flat gamma (REDLog).
