  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

8 or 9 stops, is this a fact or guess?

aint good old video only about 7 stops, i have a hard time believing 8 to 9 stops
for the red

I have shot 5 commercials with red cameras and used them a few other times. From my experience and what I see I would rate it at 8 or 9 stops.

Many highly regarded profesionals like Richard Bluck (Dp for PJ's short crossing the line) have also rated the camera between 8 and 9 stops. Head to head tests of the red against the sony F23 showed the F23 to have easily 2-3 stops better DR. The red camera is very good for a $17,500 camera, but it is not the dalsa, viper, f23 killer that it was expected to be. You get what you pay for and all in all $17,500 is quite a good deal for a red.

Why is there a DigiPrime on the SI? Isn't it a single CMOS sensor? DigiPrimes are designed for 3-chip cameras.

Well, you can put DigiPrimes on a RED.... so why not a 2k Mini? I'm pretty sure 2/3" lenses do better on single sensor cameras then 16mm or 35mm lenses do on 2/3" cameras.

Here's a rudimentary quick hack job based on the si-2k posted.

Basically the bulk of the camera is the lens so naturally I pushed the rails forward starting at the back/battery pack base.

Feel free to expand/redesign.

Just like you can use the Abakus 132 adapter to realign the color separations to recitify a 2/3" B4 mount video lens onto the RED when shooting in 2K (or onto a Super-16 film camera for that matter), so does the B4 lens adapter allow the same for the SI camera.

Edit: I stand corrected, I was thinking of the SI-2k mini not the SI-2k. But the picture on this thread is of the mini. The SI-2k looks like this: http://www.siliconimaging.com/DigitalCinema/Images/SI-2K_productpage.jpg

Original post:
Isn't part of the reason that the SI-2K is small is that you have to shoot tethered to a computer to process the image? I thought it was missing some hardware that would make it an all-in-one camera in exchange for price and a smaller size.

Considering what can be done by casio with this fixed lens still camera;
http://www.exilim.com/intl/ex_f1/
(it's supposed to be ~$1000, has 6mp 60fps burst shooting, 300fps vga video),
I have High hopes for Red producing some sort of high quality, high performing, camera in a small form factor.

The ex-f1 really makes me wonder if it's influencing the development of scarlet. The specs on the casio are tough to beat. Somehow I think red will do fine doing that, though.

There are rumors on the web that Leica are also working on a smaller version
of the Leica M8...this could mean that a camera like this will see the daylight in the near future. (maybe on the Photokina, later this year?)
This camera is small enough to be called "pocket cam" if they make it with
a M bayonet mount, you will have the best little profesional cam money can buy!

The 1080P chips are getting cheaper every day, so if RED puts a 1080P sensor in this cam, you will have the ideal 1080P Pocket cam with seperate lenses!

Leica sure isn't what they used to be - sure they still make pretty things - but they used to be the best of the best.

I wonder if Leica has gotten worse - or if it's just everyone else has gotten better?

I think everyone else has gotten better. Leica has always represented one segment of the photogrpahy market: 35mm rangefinders. As far as those go they are still on top. Even though there is only one other digital rangefinder, they are leading that category too. So to say they were the best of the best is a little hard considering there have always been many things you couldn't do with Leicas Ms that you could do with SLRs.

Also, the introduction of plastic elements and computer ground elements in lenses probably helped level the playing field too.
