Here is a list of Scarlet "packages" I came, up with. .I'll definitely edit it, so tell me what you think...

Level 1 – Scarlet & Memory

Additional Mounts - $500 (£250)
Two Universal Mounts - $250 (£125)
Top handle – $175 ($90)

$1575 - £800
($6175 - £3100)

Level 3 – Matte Box and LCD
Matte Box - $1000 (£500)
RED LCD - $1700 (£850)
RED ARM - $150 (£75)

$2850 - £1500
($9025 - £4500)

($14,000 - £7000)

Level 6 – On set editor
Macbook Pro - $4000 - £2000

$4000 - £2000
($18000 - £9000)

Level 7 – Pro Home editor
MAC PRO - $8000 (£4000)

$8000 - £4000

($26,000 - £13000)

I think the Macbook Pro is a must have as the need to back up footage, on set, is paramount.

Just a suggestion -- including the computers as the delineating factor between what makes each package 3k/2k/1080p when we're a year out doesn't make a whole lot of sense. The Macs will evolve, and I wouldn't be surprised if by next year we see quad-core MacBook Pro's that can handle 3k footage just fine.

Too many moving targets -- easier to keep it just to the camera for the time being, I would think.

That's actually a good point, didn't think about that, I'll edit it.

Nice list. I'll say this though, for me, the high-end monitoring option would be the RED EVF. Would love to bolt the EVF onto the top of the camera and shoot like that.

Well, considering the cost of the package, there's not much price difference between the 7" Screen and the EVF, but I do agree with you...Then again, for the Run and Gunners, I think the LCD will be more useful...I will edit it though

Focussing on the Red One is not so bad with the 5" monitor, I imagine on the 2/3 sensor in 3K it should be even easier.

I have the impression, and the hope, that the camera will include far more than I or many people will need.

I understand that packages and accessories will be good for certain applications and often necessary for others; but adding a 7" LCD that cost $500 less than the actual camera????

WHAT?

Why did RED include an 4.8" LCD?

Do we know for a fact that the RED EVF will work on Scarlet?

Also, I don't think the Base package should include the additional side handles and mounts. Just a top mount is enough for basic transport. Otherwise, great list!

If someone from RED has said something to this effect, I certainly haven't seen anything about it. I was more stating a simple preference (or, if you will, indulging in idle speculation), not trying to imply that the RED EVF would (or even should) work with the Scarlet.

And, truth be told, picking up an EVF that might cost more than the camera itself seems a bit overkill. But as for myself, I still prefer, even in run and gun situations, to shoot using a viewfinder rather than an LCD.

So, to answer your question, no, I guess.

Just to be clear, I wasn't trying to nitpick. I was only wondering if they had announced it somewhere that I missed reading. It would be great if it worked!

And I don't think it's overkill to use a $2900 EVF on a $3000 camera. Throw on a Letus35 Extreme adapter, some lightweight rods & shoulder mount, and a clip-on mattebox, and you have yourself a 3K Mini-RED for less than $10,000!

I must admit, the extra monitors and EVF are most probably overkill, but in one of the concept images, and on the display models, they had the 5" Monitors stuck on the Scarlet, so I thought, what the hell...also, I think if you're adding handles onto the Scarlet, a flip out monitor would be a bit awkward.

I think it would be better if RED gave get rid of the flip out monitor, thus cutting costs, and then people buy they're own monitors seperately, that way, they can position it in the ideal position for themselves, ala RED ARM

but then again, run and gunners are gonna find the flip out really useful...I think, once I've tweaked the packages I'll run a poll.

I personally like that route, as well. However, I doubt it wouldn't fly from a business standpoint -- it's too much of a niche approach. Scarlet is supposed to be ready to shoot straight out of the box (like every other camera in it's price class). Not many of us are going to consider it good to go without SOME sort of monitor.

Jaime-

Didn't mean to imply that you were being nitpicky; sorry if my post came across that way.

And if the RED EVF is as good as people say it is, I still would totally consider using it on the Scarlet. Even though some people might look at me like I was a little bit crazy. :umm:
