There used to be a picture and breakdown of what would be on the Scarlet, both the fixed lens and interchangeable lens versions. I can not seem to find it anymore and know things have changed a lot with what the Scarlet is or will be. Does an outline exist on what will be available, or is it still up in the air? I have read the first FAQ page, but I am more interested in a more detail description with picts, especially from the interchangeable lens version.

I am pretty sure there hasn't been any sort of "package" outlined for the interchangeable Scarlet; at least I don't recall anything specific. Once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away there was a price estimate of $2750 for the body only. Then, HDRx was added and the estimate was that it would add $1000 to the price. I believe (but can't swear) that the body was to include a side CF module in that price so, if the default changes to include an SSD module instead, that could also bump the price. And, since that was a while ago, the price may end up being higher than even that... or not. There really has not been a lot of specific detail about the interchangeable Scarlet but pretty much everything that applies to the Fixed would apply to the interchangeable, unless of course it has something to do with the lens. :001_smile:

That 4750 price for the fixed was a package deal, with everything neeeded to shoot out of the box not just the body(before HDRx). Now if that is still in the game plan who knows a lot has changed. I don't think we will hear about this until they are closer to shipping them, it would be nice to know but I'm not sure even they know all the numbers and prices yet (or that they could).

I think they are sticking to not releasing things early and that makes sense for the market scarlet is aimed at as we tend to pick things apart and condem things very quickly, considering the improvements in the red one from early builds until now I can understand waiting until the last minute before letting the cat out of the bag or giving us raw files from the camera to pick apart.

have a good one!

edit: I and others asked about interchangeable package deals, like the fixed one but with two mini primes or none, and were told that we would be told about package deals and such closer to delivery so I assume when all the parts issues are solved the assembly line is started and the first push of real marketing is happening is when we will find out about package deals and final specs and actual shipping dates.

I guess its all speculation till the final package details are given , i would hope for a package for the fixed that would include ssd drive wide angle and tele converters and enough battery life for four hrs of recording and side grip . However we shall find out.............

(Fixed wise) I remeber Ted saying quite recently that while they haven't decided the exact pricing that roughly around $6,000 maybe $6,500 With the price of the Epic S being around $12,000 I imagine they won't tread on its toes price wise. I personally am expecting somwhere around $6-8,000 for bare bones kit of side handle + battery, LCD, basic IO, CF or SSD. I think the price will be in the upper level if SSD and the lower if CF. I don't personally want to see a teleconverter in the package upping the price but that just me. Yes we will soon know...I hope..

All I know for sure is I want one....badly.

I agree with the $6-8,000 for SSD and basic IO, as you can see in this video (uploaded in january 2011, so might be wrong now with all the nature drama for Japan)
Ted explains that you have a nice fully working Fixed Scarlet for give or take $6,000.

I'm still hoping it will be a little less, so I can have some budget for a nice Red quickrelease or some extra SSD's. But Red also has to pay their bills. ;-)

Cf will be the scarlet standard I believe they said before, they may change it to SSD but I remember them saying the packages would come with CF as it was still plenty fast enough. Now once again a lot has changed so who knows it's just the price for the SSD module and media is far higher than the scarlet market can afford, the majority of them. there was talk of a CF to SSD adapter so we could get rid of the cf module all together, and perhaps this could be feasible if the scarlet SSD module was cheaper due to reduced size and whatnot. Though I can't imagine the price would come down that much, but this would be the best of both worlds.

Either way I wouldn't count on anything being for sure until we hear the final package details, I would assume some time late august or September, if they keep on track where they are now and everything goes according to plan.

live in the now! Dream of the future! but always keep moving forward!

Let's be honest. "6000 give or take" will never be less then 6000 dollars. It's still cheap for what you get but "6000 or more" is not a good way to sell a camera.

Red hasn't actually got a nailed down product in production yet. The only difference therefore to uncertainty about the exact price between say Apple, Panasonic or any company is that they are are being open and transparent at this stage. Any Camera company before selling has an estimated price and would have to put effort to decide what price they will charge for their product.

Its really pretty silly people attacking Red for being open about the process. If people complain anymore I predict they will close up even more than they already have in recent months. Which would be a shame. The irony of top professionals not giving RED a hard time, while film students with money they scrapped together from Summer jobs moaning. I worry that if Scarlet users give Red a headache they will drop us and focus 100% on the top end professionals. I've said it before but I think Scarlet is a pure gift and you know what we shouldn't do with Gift Horses.

It seems obvious that Red can't put a final price on the camera until they have firm contracts with new suppliers for delivery of production quantities of the remaining parts that were rendered unavailable due to the Japan event. You can't set a firm sale price if you don't know what your true costs are.

That's very true David. The 3k for 3k idea is out, i just hope the price is not overshot too much over that. An affordable cine camera with those features would get a huge market base.

If Scarlet falls in the same general price range as Sony's EX series, new FS100, Canon XF300 series, and low end Panasonic P2 cameras it will still be the bargain of the century.

I'm not attacking Red - not at all.

Millennium!!

(though I do think it's a case of those other cameras being overpriced rather than Scarlet being underpriced)

i'd recommend assuming that you are going to drop $8k+ and that you are going to get a camera capable of producing images that rival cameras costing ten times that. If you can cope with that then you will be a happy camper.
Last prediction fore release i have heard echoed through here was September, that is assuming there are no further complications.

I would say my best guess for Scarlet will be next summer - where you can order it without a waiting list. I have seen extremely little raw footage, no mention of large scale beta testing or any shows shot on it. I know Jim mentioned September but I just don't see it happening. I've been in this business too long and I've seen more than my share of vaporware.

I hope I'm wrong because I'll be one of the first in line to buy one but in the mean time I have a couple of independent movies to shoot so I'm going to buy a Sony FS100.

Go Red!!! Get the Scarlet out!!
