I took the footage from felix p and did some testin. I bumped up the ISO to 3200 and plugged it thru the Neat Video Plug-in to see what it can do.
(Neat Video saved my butt a lot of times, pimping my 7D-Footage in available Light Shoots) I think the result is pretty good:
Here's a still (left side filtered with NeatVideo, right side unfiltered footage @ 3200 ISO)

If you want to see the JPG in full size:

And here is a clip of the same test. Even with H264 compression you can still see the effect:

This is by no means a scientific test ... i just wanted to try how far i can go with the ISO knowing that i can bring it back to "normal" with a NR-Plug.

That ain't too bad! Just shows how well you can fix something shot in less than perfect conditions.

where can i get that plugin and does it work with premiere and fcp?

Here you are: http://www.neatvideo.com/

Definitely a great app. Probably the best solution out there anywhere near the price range.

And thanks for this test! I havent used neat video with RED footage yet, definitely need to try it out.

Neat Video looks like a great tool and one I've been curious about for awhile. Nice to see you are getting pretty good results with it. How much does it slow render/export times though, that's been the biggest problem I've had with NR tools in the past...

Love it

I love Neat Noise. I second the recommendation. Don't let their crappy website fool you :-) One thing to note is how little sharpness you lose with Neat Noise - they are really at the top of the NR game right now.

absolutely! awesome plug. Rendertimes are pretty easy. Of course it takes some time but it renders pretty much like you had color-graded some footage in Magic Bullet Looks. he he he ... true ... their website looks like LEGO, but thr product is dope. the new release works even faster and seamless in premiere and after effects.

I've used NeatVideo on both the Mac and PC. It's a great tool.

I like that you did a splitscreen instead of two pictures. Liked the result aswell. How is the speed on neat?

I've used Neat Video for a few years and like it. It's saved several of my shots with the old HVX/Letus combo. One thing to really watch out for though, as was mentioned, is to not apply TOO much reduction, because you may cause banding in subsequent encoding (for DVD or Bluray, etc). A little noise (like salt) to taste, is ok, and preferable to banding or macro-blocking. I suppose you could possibly add more attractive noise back in, like a film grain effect, essentially dithering, to prevent the banding. That would still be preferable in my opinion to the ugly horizontal lines that tend to appear in video noise.

Agree. Neat Video has always afforded me the option of matching different film stocks. Never been a fan of plugins, since its best to know and understand what math is happening on your images, but I have to admit Neat Video is black magic.

I just want to add my voice to this: Neat Video is as good as their website is bad. Really, don't be fooled by the website. For $99, you get a plugin that easily competes with $300 plugins. We've used it on some footage from the 80's that was going into a historical piece for HD television.

Now, we have access to Nuke, so anything with serious de-noising will be passing through that. But if I ever have a personal side-project where I need to remove some noise, I would pop $100 down on a copy of Neat Video without a second thought.

Is Nuke's de-noising better than Neat Video's? Was thinking of getting Neat Video's OFX plugin version but it is more expensive.

I've been told that it is. But we haven't had any need to de-noise anything nearly as drastic as the 80's footage we de-noised with Neat Video over a year ago. So unfortunately, all I have currently is hearsay.

I only have had neat video for a week now but I like it better than NukeX's denoiser. I tried a clip i shot Friday in Nuke and thought the denoise looked more computerized (for lack of a better word) and the neat video just seemed natural. Although I have never gone too indepth on nuke's there are lots of values to tweak.

I'm just torn on which version to buy- I'm still transitioning between FCP7 and Premiere Pro, and may even want to use it in After Effects as well... Any opinion on which version to spring for?
