Hi everyone!

I need to know what will happen to me who love everything RED stands for. The genuine film camera company that brought all who love film together to make beautiful images come to life.

I as a customer, knows that despite the genuine love the company as for "film", they need to do new stuff to keep up to the evolving development in the growing technical world. Of course.

But, I am wondering if now that WEAPON, EPIC, RAVEN, SCARLET-W/Dragon exists if the SCARLET-MX (which i own) is obsolete? Has my path expired?

I do have one fact, I received an email around april/may this year which informed me to upgrade my MX to the Dragon. At that time my decision was to hold, which I now reflect back on, was a bad decision. (Upgrade path expired)

I LOVE the look of the MX-sensor and it will hold up for a long time. I just think of (The Social Network, Prometheus, TGWDT etc.) Beautiful images, shot by tremendous cinematographers.

I understand outdated technology and that companies need to innovate in order to remain on the market but is it really so in this case ? With my SCARLET-MX?

You're in the mother of all upgrade paths: sell your Scarlet to an up-and-coming film maker, take that money and buy any other camera that you want.

Couldn't be more simple, really.

I have one as well. The value is in keeping it working. It is far from obsolete. You may have to be creative in getting it out there, but there are still jobs for this camera.

I have an EX-1 which still works 2x/year, which makes it more valuable to keep than to sell.

If you're in the camera rental business, rent your Scarlet. If you're in the filmmaking (business?) make a movie. You are living the dream man! Enjoy the ride! Shoot a short ... put it on youtube ... show it to us ... If you want to rent stuff, sell the Scarlet and get a CASE 580 Backhoe!

No more options for scarlet MX.. keep it, can't upgrade and used market is not worth selling

+1 Keep it not worth selling.

Then A keep shooting with it until you have money and the needs to shoot slowmo, 6k, 8k or what ever that is you need,
or B buy a new camera and use the Scarlet as B camera or Backup camera.

Lol....... great points but I've heard that there's a 590 planned for launch @ the next NAB.

That's really a great, great point that I have been thinking about. The camera is not worth selling. That's because you can't get anything else that even resides in the same universe....for anywhere near that small amount of money. You can sell it of course, but the options at the price you would get don't get you anywhere near close to shooting compressed raw at the speeds and frame sizes that even the lowly Scarlet MX is capable of.

The only camera that is obsolete is the one that stays on the shelf.
great uses for these cameras and I am not just talking here I own one.

1. Any web based to Indy film production.
2. A back up body for any shoot.
3. A 5k time lapse b camera
4. Second camera for interviews, ect
5. 4K drone camera
6. Crash cam or more risky situation camera
7. 3k slomo camera

point is. Even original red one my cameras are making films and in the field every day.

When you buy into red at any level you are buying into an camera and file format ecosystem. While the camera may not benefit from every upgrade, your footage does. I still have the first shots from my original redone M camera and that footage sings with every software decoding development.

So, if you think you are at the end of the road part of that is true and part of that is state of mind and attitude. Remember, with RED attitude is everything.

I totally agree on what you are saying David. The MX is a fantastic sensor. My camera is for sure still usable in many ways.

The only thing that bothers me in this case is in fact the sensor, not the framerate/compression or the form factor but the Dragon sensor. Seeing the difference in color in the dark and the better DR in dragon makes me want it so bad.

But as all of you say. I just need to sell my MX camera for a reasonable price, then start collect money for a new camera.

I would say keep it. It´s a gem of time. And today it is still more capable than most competing brands.

Sebastian if DR and Colors are you main concern don't worry too much in upgrading. I did several test beteween MX and dragon and you will be surprice what a properly expoxed (for outdoors slighly underespoxed) MX can do. I also found WB is a bit weird on MX but easly fixed with the tint slider once you master the trick.
The main reason I Upgraded to Dragon was Because of the IR filtration (easily fixable on MX with IRND's), Higher resolution 5k, higher frame rates 48fps at 5k.

I use my MX mixed with Dragon all the time. I just finished 2 shoots this weekend in which my MX Scarlet was the main camera with 2 Dragons shooting 4k HD. I know the Dragons DR and sensor are better but at 4k HD the Scarlet held its own. I've also shot 2 documentaries with it. Sit-down interviews look fantastic. I will move up one day but I bought a Zeiss CZ 28-80 as my big purchase and I'm happy with it. I'm Scarlet until the end of 2016.
