Scarlet might not be released??

We are used to seeing something at a show, being impressed and integrating the product a few weeks later. In this case it was 'it does what, at that price?' and then it doesn't appear for at least two years (realistically 2010 right?). That just seems dishonest but perhaps I am not used to this model of marketing. At this point there are some trust issues with this company.

What shows are you used to frequenting? Panasonic took over 2 years to bring the HVX200 to market after it was announced, or rather 2 years after announcing their "under $7500 prosumer HD camera that records DVDPROHD @ 100Mbps". OTOH, there were no direct statements other than a press release from the manufacturer. I've lost track of the amount of cool new things talked about at NAB 2007 and 2008 that are still not available. RED has not missed any dates with the DSMC cameras. They were only 4 to 6 months "late" delivering the first RED One, depending on who you ask, but lots of things changed for the better.

As for trust issues, what are they? If I have a problem, I can call them. I can email many of them directly, even the owner of the company. They have not made any promised dates for any upcoming product. Just tentative time-frames.

Going back to your previous post about dangling carrots and producers can't budget... That's just a load of bunk. Any producer or estimator who has been estimating budgets for a while (and doing it successfully) will know you don't pin down budgets based on unreleased products. Works that way in any other industry, whether we're talking about an IT data center and trying to plan for future server blades and CPU upgrades or highway construction and a new GPS-assisted laser leveling system for a paving machine. Can't buy it today? Fine, don't put it in the budget for a production. If I were writing a budget or proposal for a production that I would like to use Scarlet on, I would just have to suck it up and accept that I can't do that. I plan for what is actually available now and I can revise the budget as new products arrive. Even if Jim came on here and announced that Scarlet was shipping tomorrow and all orders would be filled in two weeks, I still wouldn't plan to use the camera until I actually had it in my hands and also had a chance to test it under the conditions I would need to use it in.

If RED 1 has sold 5000 units then thats impressive and I am wrong with some of my points.

RED won't say how many cameras they have shipped. But they stopped skipping serial numbers due to reservation fulfillment sometime around sn:3000. I know a couple people who have just taken deliveries of cameras numbered over 6000.

At the very least this company is pushing others in the same direction which is good for all of us, had they had a Scarlet type product out there they could take advantage of this explosion in that sector of the market.

Yep. But to have Scarlet already would have been putting the cart before the horse so to speak. The RED One served as a development platform on which to build the future cameras. In a way, it's almost more of an R&D project that consumers could buy into and receive a functional camera out of the deal. The upcoming cameras are a lot smaller and more powerful due to custom developed ASICS / processors and not as much "off the shelf" circuitry. Things that could not have been developed as easily without first building something like the RED One. I think the actual "explosion" is still to come. The market for $18K camera bodies isn't that big. But the potential market increases exponentially when that price is cut to 1/3 of that and features are maintained, some even improved.

To say that these cameras are overkill for the lower-end market, most of their stuff is destined for the web, etc... Is rather short-sighted, IMO. My RED One makes some of the most amazing web videos. It does things I can't do with an HVX200 or other camera I own or have owned. What I love about the camera is the ability to manipulate the RAW data as one would with stills from a DSLR. Additionally the extra resolution and image quality over HD is phenomenal. My clients love it because I can shoot a video for web distribution and inclusion on a corporate DVD. But they can call me up wanting an HD version of it to show on a 1080p projector at a tradeshow venue and I can say, "Sure no problem, I'll have that for you in the morning. Would you like it on hard drive or blu-ray?" And it's already done because I shot the piece in 4K, ran post in 2K and already have a 2K / 1080p master done, which is what I used to produce the web video. It didn't take me any more time or effort to do that than had I shot the piece on an HVX200 and ran post at 720p.

Ironically the snide comments come from the RED Team member and not the other members of this forum who have taken an educational position in their posts. There is a certain arrogance from the RED company that is a real turn off.

Hmmm... I haven't seen any snide comments. Of course, there was the request for you to leave in peace if your opinion differed. And that they will add your comments onto their industry comment wall, which is probably rather huge. Looking at it from RED's point of view, they have faced harsh criticism since the original RED One was announced. And yet they have delivered. It probably gets tiring to read or hear the same tired comments over and over and over.

You also have to figure you may have ruffled some feathers with some of your assumptions when you stated them as a matter of fact.

zane smithe, considering how completely incorrect your ideas and analyses in post #31 were, it's a marvel that these guys like David are actually taking the time to answer you in detail. you should buy them one of these =

But it didn’t and other ‘Scarlets’ did, the Canon and Nikon SLR’s that shoot HD, ok they are not perfect but you already have the second generation ones on the market, GH1. Bolt them onto rails add some nice audio and a $700 monitor and you are good to go. These brains cost around $1000 and have left the RED concept behind.

Statements like these almost make me think that you are joking around? I shoot HD all the time on my 5D2, but aside from low light capabilities, the video created by the 5D2 is a complete and total joke compared to what the DSMC cameras will record. That's like comparing a moped to a rice rocket.

a bit off topic...

I consult with an investment firm (sw integration). Out of the blue one of the managers comes up to me asking about the new scarlet. He knew I executive produced a film and wanted to know if I had heard of it. It turns out he's a hobbyist photographer who can't wait to get his hands on a scarlet - apparently, he's been following it's development online for the past year or so. My point is RED may be more successful in building a market than we give them credit for. Let's face it many of the RED1 owners were previous DVX owners who made the jump from 5k gear to 35k gear because of the personal relationship they formed with the company (via Jarred Land's DVXuser and now REDuser). That's a major triumph. I believe they're apt to do the same in the DSLR world. Many hobbyists may find themselves diving into the RED sea.

From a business standpoint however; no camera will ever provide the kind of revenue that redray can (assuming they can bring it to market). The licensing deals alone will net the kind of money THX and DOLBY Sound can only dream of. Can you imagine what blockbuster.com and netflix.com would do with such a technology (hi quality 2k to the home over existing infranstructure...) Redray has the potential to make RED a multibillion dollar company.

I have yet to see any new offerings by any of the big camera companies that can compete with the creative capabilities and potential of Red's announced products.
Scarlet is the affordable high quality digital motion picture camera that I have been hoping for since I stopped shooting 16mm film a couple of decades ago. The modular DSMC concept is both brilliant and so far beyond what any other manufacturer has even attempted that I don't mind waiting a few more months, or even a year, for its release.

Well, I read yesterday how the latest, greatest Kodak Vision 3 stock has "14 stops" of light gathering.

I read somewhere that Kodak is considering getting out of the film business entirely. But that may just be for still photography. Right?

We should open up a boxing ring in the back of the warehouse.

So RED is left with the consumer / prosumer / hobbyist market that will probably buy about 1000 units, and lets face it this market doesn’t even need the alleged resolution the Scarlet potentially offers because the majority of the projects will go to web.

At best the RED Scarlet will be an expensive niche product, inevitably tech support and upgrades would diminish.

Are you prepared to put your money where your mouth is? I will wager you that Red will have sold more than 1,000 Scarlets within 6 months of its full release.

If I'm right, you buy me the Scarlet brain of my choice. If I'm wrong, I will do likewise.

I'm serious. Talk is cheap: PM me if you are prepared to back your words with anything more than wind.

Cheers

keep going mate  ...the more you piss RED off the better the cameras outlined become

1000? I think it will be over 3000 in the first 6 months. This is the dream camera for ALOT of us.

Well yes, and that's something that either suits you or not. A lot of people like that 'arrogance' as RED certainly has the position to act like that, knowing that they have sufficiently stressed the point that while we're allowed a peek in the kitchen of their R&D process and actually are able to see some of our own wishes granted in the conception of their products, there's little to nothing to cling on to. Everything is subject to change. It's their slogan, for God's sake. :)

Certainly, it's hard to plan your production based on tentative information, but if you want a sure route: get the stuff that's available now and suits your needs (Red One included). If you want facts and don't like the approach on informing here on these boards then I suggest you stick to whatever available products and services RED offers online and at business venues. The angle of this board is merely 'for your information' and 'what do you guys think about this?'...

Lots of people enjoy RED thinking out loud and letting us in on their creative process. I wouldn't want it any other way.

Jarred, I want seasons reservations to the ring. But I'm afraid Zane needs a better trainer. There are some seasoned heavyweights here. And a couple of champs.

But clear out the spiders first!

No doubt. Zane was the one who claimed Red would sell about 1,000. I would make the same bet at 3,000. So far, no PM.

I am rising the bet to 10000 units within the first 6 months, providing RED can "keep up" with manufacturing...

What, no superpowers (besides the involuntarily and painful ability swell your your leg) yet?

Naw, just playin man. here's a couple tips I found for avoiding widow bites (from kidshealth.org):

1. Don't play around in rock piles or wood piles. Unless you're 6yo and/or have reckless abandon for your personal wellbeing.
2. If you are working outside in the yard in big piles of logs or leaves, wear gloves. Also, wear shoes when going outside at night (this also helps to avoid stepping in dog shit with your barefeet cuz that's just gross).
3. Be sure to shake out blankets and clothing that have been stored in the attic or the basement, or if they have been in a closet but not used for a long time. Also, Fabreze them.
4. If you are cleaning behind furniture, look carefully behind it before reaching around. A periscope would come in handy here.
5. If you keep your shoes in a mudroom or garage, shake them out before putting them on. Or soak them in insecticide overnight. Whichever is easier.
6. Wash all fruits and veggies that can be potential homes for the spiders as soon as you get home (like bunches of grapes or bananas).
7. Keep your distance until you have the spider in an easy position to be squashed. A sledgehammer attached to a boom pole comes to mind here.
8. Vaccuum regularly. Mopping optional.
9. Keep and maintain a Spider Wasp nest. They prey on widows (and spiders in general). It would be wise to invest in an apiarist suit if you take this route.
10. Keep a flamethrower handy at all times. (...ok, so I made up this last one, but you can't tell me that it wouldn't be all kinds of 'Yippy-Ki-Yay' awesomeness)

Joking aside, these are steps we can all use. HTH.

EDIT: Apologies for the hijack.

Guys I think the problem with Zane is that, he actually wants a Scarlet really badly. Most ppl who can't get what they want right away, will complain and argue that the alternative is much better. They will do this as a form of manipulation to get what they want. Now as we ALL (and DEF Including ME!!) Would love to see scarlet released now or get at least a fixed date, I think we all have to trust that RED is probably making a product so amazing that will probably exceed our expectations. (of course I could be wrong, but Jim has hinted on that in previous posts, Ill try to find it btw) Not having a set release date, or having such Elusive info on a product certainly sucks, we also have to acknowledge that there is a lot of information about the scarlet, that seems to repeat itself through out the forum. Which tells me that the product is definitely in development. Im sure that not only will RED deliver on a product that will blow away the competition, it will blow us all away as well.
