  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet interchangeable ?

I guess we won't have any update before Scarlet-F release (same applies to the EPIC-S with the EPIC-X).

It's hard to keep up, but I think it goes epic x, then scarlet fixed, then Epic S, then scarlet interchangeable. No Epic X yet, so could be a while for the interchangeable scarlet.

Eric's right I think. I think it could be two years before we see the Scarlet interchangeable. It's the least talked about camera, which is strange, as it's a really popular camera that most people seem to want.

I think we'll only know timescales when the Epic-X is out.

I don't think it will be anything like two years. Both Scarlets are pretty close to ready for production. I doubt release of any of the Epic/Scarlet MX generation models will be delayed past NAB next year. Availability of optics to build the lenses seems to be the main hold up for now. It is more a matter of getting the necessary parts in quantities necessary to begin production at this point.

I'm not an engineer so the technical discussion is over my head. But I posted somewhere that I thought it would be easier to make an interchangeable camera, than a fixed lens camera.

My idea was you just have to make a camera mount, not a lens, so that would be quicker and easier. However, someone posted that the exact opposite is true. It's actually harder to make an interchangeable camera that will accommodate different lenses than to make a fixed camera.

And this seems logical when you realize most video cameras until recently have all be fixed lens cameras, probably for that reason.

Red has a lot on their plate. Trying to get the Epic into mass production for the Epic X release, the Scarlet fixed, and the Epic S. I think it would be a wise decision to release the Scarlet fixed (since that's already designed and ready to go) and then the Epic S, and worry about the Scarlet interchangeable later.

I have no idea that's the plan, everything is subject to change, I could be completely wrong.

But Scarlet fixed will take care of the low end market, and Epic S will take care of the higher end market that doesnt' want to go full Epic X.

It's hard to compare with ISO factored in. However, I have a canon dslr and I like the ability to shoot at 400 - 800 ISO at f1.8. The picture is still not to noisy, and the amount of light needed for a good picture is minimal, meaning you can shoot closer to sunset, or not set up as many lights.

If Scarlet fixed can come close to that, I don't think I'll need additional lenses. Also going wide is a factor, I can't remember what Scarlet fixed is supposed to do for the wide angle, but I think it will be sufficient.

Both Scarlets have been in development. Most of the technology, sensor, processing, and basic firmware are common to both cameras. According to Jarred the firmware is to a large extent common to all the cameras, Epics and Scarlets. They are still working through debugging and completing software features with the M class Epic owners that will be shared by all cameras. I expect we will hear more of the Scarlets once they are happy with where the software development is. The lower end users that many Scarlets will sell to are not likely to be technically savvy or tolerant enough to deal with Beta software issues.
It makes more sense to release the fixed first for marketing reasons. Epic-S can be built on the same line with common mechanical components and the same assembly process as Epic-X, just a different set of processor boards. Scarlet interchangeable is mechanically different from both the Epics and the fixed enough to need its own assembly process, so it makes some sense that it will be last and will follow production ramp up on the other models. But all this hopefully will occur pretty quickly, a matter of months not years. I'm really looking forward to playing with my vintage 16m lenses on a Scarlet interchangeable.

Would love to have some new information on the scarlet program once the EPIC stages start shipping :)

We probably will. My question is since they designed the Epic and Scarlet to be great for 3D work, if it is something you plan on wanting to do, do you have to have 2 cameras with the same lens system? Or can you have a Fixed, then later get a Interchangeable Scarlet? I'm not to up to speed on 3D technology. I'm trying to read up on it.

From seeing other 3D epic set ups, I can speculate that you would need to keep the optics the same on both cameras to get them to match properly.

Besides 3d I see the scarlet interchangeable being the new indie camera of choice. It is very small and light weight. The mini primes look solid and will get a nice DOF (not 5d DOF, but very cinematic looking images in RAW) and the post options are endless. Very exciting.

I figured as much. I'm kind of stuck between the two Scarlets. I love the fixed for its versatility, but the interchangeable for size and lens options with the mini primes. I'll probably open my wallet a few times to RED.

I feel the same way, but what I'm thinking is that the fixed will be an amazing deal with all the accessories. Work with the fixed make your money back and than buy the interchangeable body and mini primes and your ready to go! All the accessories from the fixed will work perfect with the interchangeable and BAM two different camera set ups for what ever you need to shoot.

Exactly. I'm actually trying to work a Bomb EVF into my budget too! 2 Angles would be great to have especially for the kind of shooting I generally do.

I'd like to end up with one of each eventually, but hoped to buy the interchangeable first with a standard PL mount or C-mount for use with vintage 16mm lenses. Actually would rather have PL and convert my C-mounts with adapters.
Depending on release time frame for the fixed vs the interchangeable and alternate mounts vs my budget situation I might opt for the fixed first.

exactly my thought process. With the amount of time it has taken RED between releases (not a knock). I'm guessing there will be a pretty good gap considering the Epic-S is supposed to be after the Scarlet Fixed if I remember right.
