  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Scarlet Interchangeable

Well. My cinematography teacher was telling us how Black Swan was shot on Super16. (I so badly want to see it. . . darn limited releases. it takes forever to get out here. )

Oh and Dexter is shot on a 2/3" sensor.

Sorry guys. It was late, I meant a shallow DOF. :P

If you compare the 2/3" and the S35 how big is that difference in DOF? I know the bigger sensors give you a shallower DOF, but in comparison to the 2/3" is it a Huge difference?

It should be around 2 1/2 stops. So, a 2/3 camera with f2.4 should give a similar image as S35 at f5.6, assuming nothing else changes (framing, camera position etc.).

Here's example shots (D90) with simulated DoF difference: the blurrier ones were shot with f2.8, they represent the S35 DoF (D90's sensor is roughly the same size as S35). The less blurry ones were shot at f7.1, simulating what the image would look like with a 2/3" camera, if shot with the same f2.8 aperture.

This is the same phenomenon, looking at the other side of the coin...

Great examples. However with the Red mini primes at T1.5 the f2.8 examples are very close to what is achievable in terms of DOF with the interchagable Scarlet.

So in comparison to the Canon 5D, would the scarlet have roughly the same latitude?

Also I keep hearing about the red mini primes, where can I read up on them.?

Eric..read up on HDRx..all Red cameras will have it. It gives much more
dynamic latitude than any camera out there. Here is link to footage of it..

As for the mini-primes..they were announced for Scarlet interchangeable
and were small..fast..fully manual..prime lenses. The price was about
$1,000 a lens. Of course this may have changed somewhat upon release.

I won't speak for how much DR the 5D has in video mode, since that is somewhat contested and we aren't supposed to discuss other cameras here. But, based on what has been accomplished with Epic, I am optimistic that the Scarlet will hit at least 17 stops of DR when using HDRx. Of course, that's purely speculation. I'm guessing that in the next month or two we will learn a lot about Scarlet in regard to specs like DR.

There isn't much worth reading at this point regarding the mini-primes in my opinion. Things always change, and its been so long since the last announcement...
